Several different spellings for the family name WAHNSIDEL have evolved since the arrival of Peter and his four brothers, Phillip, Jacob, Nicholas and George, and his sister, Barbara, in this country. I have seen the name spelled,
WHONSELLER, WONSETLER, WONSELTER, WHONSETTER, WONSETTLER and WHONSETTLER.
For reasons of clarity I will use the old German spelling throughout this document.

     The Wahnsidel family first settled on the "East Shore", meaning on the east shore of Maryland, shortly after the Revolutionary War. They moved to the southwest part of Pennsylvania around Washington County. From there they spread on down the Ohio to the Midwest and on to California.

     Phillip, Jacob, Nicholas and Barbara all settled in and died in Washington County Pennsylvania.

[I found this information in some information on Washington County Pennsylvania. I'm sure this belongs with this family but not to sure just how it fits in. So I will put it here. In the text I took this from the family name was spelled "Wonsettler". Later generations of our branch in Caldwell County, MO. spelled it "Wonselter". And in the same Census there is a "Wonsetler" in Buchannon County, MO.]

     Simon Wahnsidel, a prosperous and widely-known farmer and stock raiser of West Bethleham township, is a native of the county, born in Amwell township on March 6, 1850.

     Nicholas Wahnsidel, grandfather of Simon, was born in 1754, in West Bethleham township, this county, and died at the age of eighty years. He had two children, Jonathan and Samuel, the latter of whom died in infancy.

     Jonathan passed his early years in assisting his father on the farm, and in attending the common schools. He was united in marriage with Delia Simmons, a daughter of John Simmons, who was of German parentage, and to this couple were born the following named children: Anna, Elizabeth, Demas, and Simon.

     Simon Wahnsidel when twenty one years of age bought the farm of fifty-five acres in West Bethleham township where he now resides. On August 20, 1871, he married Clara Garrett, a daughter of Samuel Garrett, of West Bethleham township, and they have one daughter, Nora, born September 18, 1876. Mr. Wonsettler is a Democrat, and exerts a weighty influence in the politics of his vicinity. Both he and his wife are earnest members of the Lutheran Church.

PETER WAHNSIDEL

1st Generation

A.     Peter brought with him his wife, Catherine, and four children, Daniel, Nickolas, Matthias and one unnamed daughter. In 1807 Peter bought 150 acres of land for $2.50 per acre in Mahoning County Ohio and moved his family there. There were other children born in Ohio, but at this time their names are unknown. Nothing is known of the other members of Matthia's brothers and sisters families. Peter died 12 January 1817 and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Mahoning County Ohio. Catherine died 25 November 1828 and was buried in Old North Lima Cemetery, Mahoning County Ohio.

2nd Generation

A.1.      Matthias Wahnsidel was born in Germany on 3 March 1803 and was raised in Mahoning County Ohio. His father, Peter, died when he was fourteen years old. Matthias drifted west to Mercer County Ohio where he met and in 1826 married Mary Ann Ettenburn [ sometimes spelled Eatinburn and Edenburn ] . From there they moved to Warren County Ohio. Matthias died in November of 1854/1855 in Hamilton County Indiana. Mary Ann died 28 April 1870 in Missouri. Matthias and Mary Ann were "Dunkards". Mary Ann's second husband was Timothy Holcomb.

A.1.4.     Jacob Wilhelm Wahnsidel

Born 30 October 1835 in Starke County Ohio died 13 October 1913 at Congil, Caldwell County, Missouri. Married in 1860 Mary Ann Yancey in Missouri. Married 2nd 7 January 1869 Sarah Morm(?) in Davies County Missouri. Sarah died 11 June 1948 in Caldwell County Missouri. Jacob was Baptist. Jacob had one son by first wife and four sons by second wife.

Born 10 January 1837 in Starke County Ohio died 3 May 1913 in Kern County California. married 29 November 1853 William Samuel Yancey. William died 9 November 1901 in Kern County California. Mariah was a "Dunkard" but converted to the Christian Church. Mariah and William had four girls and three sons.

A.1.7.     Josiah Wahnsidel

Born 8 September 1842 in Fayette County Pennsylvania died 18 September 1918 in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas. 1st wife unknown. Married 2nd 1 April 1875 Mary Melissie Sales. Mary died 7 March 1937 in Larned. Josiah served with the Kansas Cavalry through the Civil War. Josiah was not of any known faith. Josiah and Mary had nine sons and one daughter. The last boy and girl were twins.

Born 5 September 1854 in Hamilton County Indiana died 10 September 1902 in Kern County California. After the death of his father Albert was sent to a Catholic Home. Its not known if he followed that faith later or not. Married 1st Malinda Sales. Married 2nd 6 January 1885, in Reno County Kansas, Dora Priest born 13 April 1867 in Illinois died 18 May 1923 in Reno County Kansas. Albert and Malinda had one daughter. Albert and Dora had three daughters, one son and one infant.

Born 19 June 1828 in Warren County Ohio died 23 January 1912, Married 3 May 1846 in Fayette County Pennsylvania Mr. John Kildon Jr. Sussanah was a "Dunkard" but later converted to the Christian Church. John died 26 June 1915 in Forest, Clinton County, Indiana. John served as a substitute in the last year of the Civil War. Sussanah and John had eight daughters and one foster son.
