Roger Burgoyne knight and baronet
son of John Burgoyne baronet by
Jane his wife (who was the)
only heir of William Kemp of 'Spaines hall' in the county of Essex
gentleman.
A man
of pure religion
unusual wisdom
admired loyalty
of a spirit generous to the needy
hospitable to others
to all friendly, and of shining
and extreme modesty which denied
his other virtues
(i.e. refused to praise himself for them).
Twice to the great councils of the realm
he was called by the joyful votes
of the whole county
(Parliamentary
representative)
of Bedford
and Warwick.
The
universal delight of all while he lived, and (universal) loss on his death.
In
his first marriage he took Anne daughter and heir of Charles Snelling
citizen of London who bore him ten children. (flli not understood).
There survive him Jane, John, Anne, Mary and Judith.
By
his second marriage with Anne daughter of John Robinson
of
Deighton in Yorkshire gentleman he had seven children.
Among
the living still remain Elizabeth, Anne and Philadelphia
His widow, on account of her duty towards her husband, consecrated
with tears this marble, unequal (insufficient) to such great virtues
and to her affection.
He
died on September 16th, in the year of Our Lord
1677 in the 59th (year) of his life.
