| We held the second Anniversary of Crosshands Sabbath School, on Easter Sunday and Monday. The Sunday was truly a good day; God was with us; the good conduct of the children, and the very interesting manner in which they recited their pieces, shewed that there had been great perseverance on the part of the teachers. The children were listened to with deep interest, and they gave great satisfaction to the friends who assembled on the occasion, which was manifested by their liberal contribution to the funds of the school. Br. James Brooks, the chairman of our District, who was on a Missionary tour, was with us, and preached a sermon to the parents, teachers, and children, from Matt, xix. 14, "But Jesus said, suffer little children, and forbid them not to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven." A blessed influence was felt, and truly God was with us. The Saviour's words have been verified in this school; three of the children in the past year have been converted to God, and are become members of society. This is a ground of encouragement for Sabbath school philanthropists, to persevere in such a glorious work. Lord help both ministers and people, amen. The following day the children were regaled with cake and tea; after which the parents and otters took tea, while the children sang hymns. Mrs. Lawrence took a very active part with the teachers in providing for the children; and the excellent management on both days reflected great credit on the friends of the institution. The profits of the tea, and the collections made on the Sunday, far exceeded our expectations. The treasurer has fifteen shillings in hand to provide books with which to reward the children. May this young plantation become a nursery for the church of God, is the prayer of one who loves Sabbath schools. At Crosshands we may adopt the language of David, and say, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard; that went down to the skirts of his garment: as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore." There must be union among the teachers, children, and parents, and cooperation with the preachers and teachers also. We must have the vital principle of LOVE, and then our Sabbath schools will prosper. Lord help us. Amen. S. CROCKER. May 5th, 1849. |
