BRICK WALLS IN MY LINGNER FAMILY RESEARCH
(MEINE TOTEN PUNKTE)
In many cases the questions posed below haven't yet been actively
researched. Originally, much of my knowledge of my mother's relatives was
anecdotal. However, church records
(5 villages so far) and published Familienbücher (Grosslasseln &
Halvelagen) have confirmed and supplemented that information. Because the
Saxons were a minority and a distinct society in Siebenbürgen (in religion,
language and customs), there was a lot of intermarriage within the group.
For each surname, information on locations, related surnames and key sources
is provided, if available. Details concerning referenced individuals will
include relationships, locations, etc. "?"
indicates an unresolved question or research hypothesis. Among
what I
am missing is information on recent generations (especially the more distant
relatives) and data from other villages.
LINGNER / LINCKNER (Hones)
-
My database lists many of the descendants of 6th great-grandfather Hones LINCKNER
(
)
(abt 1712-1778) of Dunesdorf
through his 2 sons, Hones (abt 1737-1806, married Catharina HENNING) and 5th great-grandfather
Andreas (abt 1744-1802, married
Maria SCHENKER).
-
6th & 7th great-grandfather Franz SCHENKER (d. 1766) had 2 daughters,
6th great-grandmother Anna (1740-1808) (who married Simon MARTINI) and
5th great-grandmother Maria (1748-1800)
(who married Andreas LINCKNER)
-
4th great-grandfather Michael LINGNER (1769-1834) married Sara SCHIEB
(1775-1852), daughter of
Georg SCHIEB, of Kreisch. Both 2nd son Andreas
LINGNER (1802-1867) and their youngest (4th) son Johann LINGNER
(1812-1873) are
my ancestors.
-
3rd great-grandfather Andreas
LINGNER married Sara GÜNTHER of Halvelagen. They had 9
children, including a set of twins.
-
Great-greatgrandfather Stephan LINGNER (1838-1897) married Elisabeth HARTMANN.
They had 10 children.

? Stephan Lingner (b. 1866), brother of my
greatgrandfather, lived in Groß Alisch and had at least 2 sons. Who
did he marry and where are his descendants?
-
? Some of the descendents of Anna LINGNER and
Andreas KRAFT were living in Chicago IL. Who are they and where are they now?
Update (Jan 2009): One of their children, Andreas Johann Krafft,
born Jan 19,1902 in Dunesdorf, died Dec 13, 1978 in Millbrook IL. His wife
Mary Hoprich,
born Jan 18, 1901 in Grossau, Siebenbürgen, died Dec 07, 1988 Millbrook IL. Both are buried in Cross Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, Yorkville IL.

New Castle PA abt Feb 1923. A son Richard M. Krafft, born/died Mar 03, 1933, is buried with
them in Yorkville. Anecdotally, the couple had 5 children.
-
? How are the other SCHIEB families in
Kreisch related to this line?
-
GÜNTHER
- At this time, my database lists only 3rd great-grandmother Sara GÜNTHER
(abt 1809 -1852) and the name of her father, Johann GÜNTHER of
Halvelagen in this family. It is through them that my Lingner line had
the nickname (Beiname) "Günther"
- Key source: Dunesdorf Church Registers
- Related surnames: GUENTHER / GÜNTHER
- ? When was Sara born and what was her
mother's name? Did she have siblings?
- ? Anecdotally, the GUENTHER family of
Chicago (and California) is related through this line as well as by marriage. Can this be
confirmed?
- ? Can the church registers for Halvelagen be accessed in any way? Does the 1998 book "Halvelagen: wo ich zu Hause war:
Heimatbuch einer siebenbürgischen Gemeinde"
include information on the GÜNTHER family? Update
(2005): The book
only includes families living in Halvelagen in 1945, and so does not provide
the link to previous generations nor to those who emigrated before World War
II.
-
HARTMANN
- My database lists some of the descendants of 3rd great-grandfather Michael
HARTMANN (no known dates) of Kreisch, including greatgreatgrandmother
Elisabeth HARTMANN (1836-1918)
- Key sources: Dunesdorf & Kreisch Church Registers
- Related surnames: HARTMANN
- ? When was Michael born and who were his
parents? Did he have other siblings? When did he die?
- ? Michael and his wife Elisabeth (Helgy) had at least 11
children. Were there other children (including another, eldest, daughter,
Elisabeth)?
- ? Of the 6 children who did not die
early, only 2 are known to have married. Did Michael HARTMANN (1816-?) and
his wife Sara STENNER have children? What about the other siblings Martin
(1817-?),
Georgius (1822-1877), Sara (1831-?) and Johann (1834-1880)?
- ? How are the other HARTMANN families in
Kreisch related to this line?
-
HELGY / HELCH
- At this time, my database lists only 3rd great-grandmother Elisabeth
HELGY (no known dates) and the names of her father, Andreas HELGY (
)
of
Peschendorf, and her sister Anna in this family.
- Key sources: Kreisch and Peschendorf church registers
- Related surnames: GIERLING, HELGY
- ? There
are 3 possible Andreas in the Peschendorf Births register that could be my ancestor, with fathers named
Andreas (2) and Martin. Can it be resolved which Andreas HELGY
is my ancestor?
- ? When was Elisabeth born and what was
her mother's name? Did she have other siblings besides Anna? When did she die?
- ? Anna married Georg GIERLING of
Kreisch and had at least 2 children: Georg and Martin. Were there other
children and other descendents?
- ? HELCH was a common surname in
Peschendorf. How are the various HELCH families related to each other and to
my line?
-
MARTINI
- My database lists some of the descendants of 7th great-grandfather
Simon MARTINI (
). Many descendents are in the USA
- 6th great-grandfather
Simon MARTINI (1735-1776) married Anna SCHENKER and had 3
children
- 5th great-grandfather Martin (Simon) MARTINI (1774-1836) married
Sara BORDON (1776-1840). They had a daughter and 2 sons. Her parents were
Michael BORDON (1741-1806) and Sara VEBER (1747-1790). Her grandparents
were Michael BORDON (
) (1718-1771) and Andreas VEBER (1713-1770) and his wife Catharina
(1708-1774). There were many BORDON
descendants in Dunesdorf
- 4th great-grandfather Martin MARTINI (1805-1849) married Catharina
KRAFT (1808-1880), daughter of Georg KRAFT of Malmkrog. Martin
MARTINI was one of those who were murdered in the 1849
Hungarian uprising.
- 3rd great-grandfather Martin
MARTINI (1831-1897) married Sara LINGNER (1839-1901).
They had 5 children.
- Key sources: Dunesdorf Church Registers, Monyer Ahnenpaß
- Related surnames: ALESCHER, BINDER, BORDON, DILLER, FABIAN,
FRITSCH, GRUBBS, GUTOWSKI, HARWELL, HILLENDAHL, HUTCHINS, KRAFT, MARTINI,
MAURER, MAYER, MELAS,
MENNING, MONYER, SARCINELLA, SCHIEB, SCHNEIDER, SCHUNN, THUT, VEBER / WEBER, YOUNG
- ? Simon MARTINI was "Incola Schäßburgensis":
are there are Schäßburg documents that mention him or his family? Were
there other children? Who was his wife?
- ? 5th great-grandfather Martin MARTINI is
also referred to as Simon MARTINI in a couple of records. Is it possible
that the Simon MARTINI references are to someone else?
- ? Several daughters over the generations drop out
of the Dunesdorf records. This probably means they married into another
village. Where did Sara MARTINI (b. 1790) and Catharina MARTINI (b. 1828) go
and did they have descendents? Update (2005):
According
to the Familienbuch Grosslasseln, Catharina MARTINI (1828-1873) married Michael
ZENN in Grosslasseln (family <2073>) and had 7 children, of whom 2 had
further descendents.
- ? Are some of the MARTINI families of Großlasseln
descendents of Michael MARTINI (b. 1765) and Sara SCHOTSCH? Update
(2005): According
to the Familienbuch Grosslasseln, there have been 9 different lines of
Martinis in Grosslasseln. This couple is not among them because they
were childless (reference family <1399>).
- ? Great-great-grandfather Martin
MARTINI (1855-1917) remarried after Sara Rosina LINGNER (1857-1891)
died. He and Amalia JICHA (1870-1894) of Alzen had a son Rudolph (b. 1892)
who was a cooper in Birthälm. Who are his descendents?
- ? Great-great-grandfather Martin
MARTINI (1855-1917) went to the USA with his 4 sons from his first marriage.
The 1910 federal census for Ellwood Ward 3, Lawrence, Pennsylvania notes his
marital status as "M3". Did he really marry a 3rd time? Who was
she and what happened to her (he was a boarder in 1910)?
-
LINGNER / LINCKNER (Hones)
My database includes 3rd great-grandmother Sara
LINGNER (1839-1901), her siblings and her parents Johann LINGNER
(1812-1873) (son of Michael LINGNER and Sara SCHIEB, see
above) and Katharina THALMANN, daughter of Georg THALMANN of Großlasseln
and his wife Katharina ARNDT in this family.
- Key sources: Dunesdorf Church Registers, Monyer Ahnenpaß,
Familienbuch Großlasseln 1694-1990
- Related surnames: LINGNER
- ? Katharina's
father, Johannes ARNDT, married Catharina THALLMEN in Grosslasseln 1797.
However his parentage is not given. Where was he born and who were his
parents?
Clues: (1) The ARNDT surname was prevalent in Rode (according to "Die
Siebenbürgisch- Sächsischen Familien-Namen", Fritz Keintzel-Schön) [A-B]
(2) My mother was absolutely certain that she was sent to Rode to get
information on a LINGNER ancestor when she had to have an Ahnenpass prepared
in order to go to Germany. (3) No LINGNER connection to Rode has been found.
Interesting speculation: Could the Rode ancestor have been an ARNDT?
-
LINGNER / LINKNER / LINCKNER (Andreas)
- My database lists many of the descendants of 7th great-grandfather Andreas
LINCKNER (
)
(1706-1786) and his wife Catharina (1715-1789)
- 6th great-grandfather Andreas LINCKNER (1733-1816) married Catharina
VEISS, daughter of Johann VEISS (1711-1780) and his wife Catharina ?
(1726-1792)
- 5th great-grandfather Johann LINGNER (1766-1811) married Sara (1764-
(1831). His descendants had the nicknames (Spitznamen) "Prediger"
& "Hanni"
- 4th great-grandfather Johann LINGNER (1800- bef 1840) married Sara ZACKEL
(abt 1801 -1861), daughter of Andreas ZACKEL of Halvelagen
- 3rd great-grandfather Johann
LINGNER (1823-1898) and his wife Catharina LINGNER
had 12 children, including 2 sets of twins. He married twice more after her
death.
- Key sources: Dunesdorf Church Registers, Monyer Ahnenpaß
- Related surnames: BAIER / BAYER, BOTH, GIERLING, GOOTZ, KRAFT, KREUZER,
LINCKNER / LINGNER, PAAL, PRUCKER, REIDEL, SCHUSTER
- ? Is there a connection between Andreas
LINCKNER (b. abt 1706) and Hones LINCKNER (b. abt 1712)?
- ? When and where did Johann LINGNER (b. 1800)
die?
- ? Johann LINGNER (b. 1853, son of
Johann LINGNER and Catharina LINGNER), went to the USA with his family in
1897. They returned to Dunesdorf in 1907 after his death. When and where did
he die (1902-1906, perhaps in Homestead PA)?
-
LINGNER (Michael)
- My database lists 3rd great-grandmother Catharina LINGNER
(1831-1881), her siblings and her parents Michael LINGNER
(
)
(1806-1893), another son of 4th great-grandfather Michael LINGNER,
and Katharina UNGEWASCHEN (1812-1873) of Großlasseln.
- Michael LINGNER & Katharina were the ancestors of the many LINGNER
families in Dunesdorf, Großlasseln and Halvelagen, through their 6 children.
- Key sources: Dunesdorf Church Registers, Monyer Ahnenpaß,
Familienbuch Großlasseln 1694-1990, Familienverzeichnis
Halvelagen
- ? Although Familienbuch Großlasseln lists 2
LINGNER families that moved to Halvelagen in the mid 1800s, the Familienverzeichnis
Halvelagen
does not include the linking generation. What are the relationships of the
LINGNER families in Halvelagen in the early 1900s to the individuals from Großlasseln?
- ?
-
SCHUSTER
- My database lists many of the descendants of 5th great-grandfather Michael
SCHUSTER (
) (1761-1823) who was born in Nadesch but moved to Kreisch.
- Because of a gap in the microfilmed Kreisch registers, there are at least
3 possibilities for the name of my SCHUSTER 3rd great-grandfather:
- Johannes SCHUSTER (1819-1892), spouse unknown (if any). His parents
were Johannes SCHUSTER (b. abt 1797) and Catharina KRAUSS, daughter of
Georgi KRAUSS, teacher in Kreisch
- Georgius SCHUSTER (1821-1896), spouse unknown (if any). His parents
were Georgius SCHUSTER (b. abt 1799) and Sara BOTH (b. abt 1802),
daughter of Stephan BOTH
- Johann SCHUSTER (b. 1827), spouse unknown (if any). He was
Georgius' brother. Their other brothers would have been too young to be
parents in 1851.
- The gap could be bridged because of this SCHUSTER family's nickname
"Nadischer"
- 2nd great-grandfather Michael SCHUSTER (1851-1933)
married Sara GREGER and had 3 children
- Key source: Kreisch Church Registers
- Related surnames: BAIER / BAYER, DENNDORF, GOOTZ, HARTMANN,
KRAUS, ROTH,
SCHUSTER, SCHWARZ, WAGNER, WEBER, WONNERTH
- ? Who were the parents of Michael SCHUSTER
(b. 1851)? Did he have siblings?
- ? Family legend is that Michael SCHUSTER (b.
1761) married a wealthy woman who had been housekeeper for a pastor at some
time. Who was his wife and where did she come from? Why and when did the
family move from Nadesch to Kreisch (1790-1810)?
- ? Although 4 of the children of Michael SCHUSTER (b.
1761) appear in the Kreisch Church Registers (Elisabetha, Catharina,
Johannes, Georgius), there is no specific mention of a son Michael. Did he
exist? Did he die young or stay in Nadesch?
- ? How are the other SCHUSTER families in
Kreisch related to this line?
-
? <SCHUSTER>
- The names of the wife of ? SCHUSTER and her parents are currently
unknown. She was probably from Kreisch, but possibly from a neighbouring
village.
-
? Possibilities for answer: from
Kreisch registers not microfilmed, Ahnenpass of another descendent,
tombstone in Kreisch cemetery
-
GREGER / GRÖGER
- At this time, my database lists only 3rd great-grandfather Johann GREGER
(born 1824 or 1828 in Kreisch) and his daughter Sara, in this family. There
are 2 possible Johanns in the births register that could be my ancestor,
both with father named Martin GRÖGER and mother Sara (Michael) CZALL or
Catherina (Georg) SCHUSTER.
- Key source: Kreisch Church Registers
-
? Can it be resolved which Johann
GREGER is my ancestor?
-
?<GREGER>
- The names of the wife of Johann GREGER and her parents are currently
unknown. She was probably from Kreisch, but possibly from a neighbouring
village.
- ? Since her oldest daughter was
named Sara, she was probably also named Sara. Can this be confirmed?
- ? When and where was she born and
what were her parent's names? Did she have other siblings? When did she die?
-
HENNING
- My database lists some of the descendants of 3rd great-grandfather Johann
HENNING (
) (1818-1890) and his parents Johann HENNING (1789-1835) and Katharina,
of
Kreisch
- Key sources: Kreisch Church Registers
- Related surnames: BOTH, DEPNER, GIERLING, HENNING, SCHUSTER,
ZIMMERMANN
- ? Did Johann HENNING (b. 1818) have other
siblings? Are there descendants?
- ? How are the other HENNING families in
Kreisch related to this line?
-
BÄR / BEER
- At this time, my database lists only 3rd great-grandmother Anna BÄR
(1822-1894) and her parents Andreas BÄR and Katherina LANG of Rauthal in this family.
- Key sources: Kreisch Church Registers
- ? Are church records from Rauthal available or
transcribed? (not listed at FamilySearch)
-
THELLMANN / THELMANN / THELLMAN
- My database lists many of the descendants of 5th great-grandfather
Johann THELLMANN (
) (1761-1833), son of Johann THELLMANN
- 4th great-grandfather Georg THELLMANN (b. abt 1805) married Anna
BINDER (1806-1833), daughter of David BINDER of Malmkrog
- 3rd great-grandfather Georg THELLMANN (1829-1901) had 5 known
children
- Key sources: Kreisch Church Registers
- Related surnames: DENNDORF, DEPNER, GIERLING, KOSTENDT, PAAL, THELLMANN, WEBER
- ? Family legend is that a THELLMANN ancestor was brought
from Holland by the Bethlen family to be a retainer. Johann THELLMANN (b.
1761) and both his sons were tailors for the Counts. Are there any records
remaining that might shed some light on earlier generations?
-
? How are the other THELLMANN families in
Kreisch and Peschendorf related to this line?
-
? <THELLMANN>
- The names of the wife of Georg THELLMANN and her parents are currently
unknown. She was probably from Kreisch, but possibly from a neighbouring
village.
- ? Possibilities for answer: from
Kreisch registers not microfilmed, Ahnenpass of another descendent,
tombstone in Kreisch cemetery
- ? 107 sets of twins are recorded in my maternal
family database (as of October 2008),
ranging in birthdate from 1720 to 1984. This number represents a frequency
close to the 1% average rate of twinning in humans. Given that there are
gaps in the records and these families are interrelated in many ways, is
there some method that can be used to determine whether a particular lineage
was more likely to have twins? What factors should be given more weight?
-
? The LINGNER / LINCKNER surname originally meant
"lefty". Since I am left-handed and so were my mother and LINGNER
grandfather, it seems to be a family trait that has held true for a long
time. How frequent is left-handedness in Transylvanian Saxons and especially
other LINGNER relatives? (Overall frequency is about 5%)
-
? In the church registers from
Saxon villages, immunization is recorded with the baptisms or in a separate
immunization section. Date, name of person giving the
immunization and a clerical witness seem to be required information. I
assume the immunization was for smallpox. Was this immunization a government
requirement? How effective was this measure?
