Wehlanns' Brickyard

(old undated newpaper clipping found in the house)

Singing commercials not new - Wehlans' Brickyard had one

Cameron Lusty of Norwalk, Connecticut, assures singing commercials on TV and radio are nothing new, because Wehlan's Brickyard had a three-verse commercial, complete with chorus, nearly 100 years ago.

While he does not have a copy, he recalls his father singing it many years ago; so has written down what he remembers: lines five and six in the first verse, and verse two do not come to mind but the following is what he remembers.

He would like to hear from anyone who had a copy of the "commercial", or can fill in the blanks. (Lines five and six cannot be recalled.)

Verse I
There is a jolly brickyard
Waydown on Talbot Street
'Tis run by Adolphus Wehlan
That is so very neat.

You ought to go and see the way
They do pitch the clay

Chorus
While the engine, it is running
And Charlie is pitching clay
Adolphus he cuts off the brick
While Eddie wheels away
There's big Gus the engineer
Who sits down on a block
You'd think he was an awful man
If you ever heard him talk.

Verse II

Verse III
Come all you jolly farmers
Who live both far and near
If you want a load of brick or tile
Please come and get it here.
Adolphus he will meet you
With a pleasant smile
And ask you which you want to have
A load of brick or tile.
