Descendants of Benjamin Follett (1676-1752)

Generation No. 1

1. BENJAMIN3 FOLLETT (ROBERT WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born 1676 in Salem, Essex, MA, and died 1752 in Windham, CT. He married PATIENCE DOULEE AKA DOUGHTY March 13, 1706/07 in Salem, Essex, MA, daughter of THOMAS DOUGHTY and ELIZABETH BULLY. She was born 1680 in Saco, Maine1, and died 1757 in Windham, CT.

Notes for BENJAMIN FOLLETT:

Benjamin and Patience Follett moved to Windham, CT from Salem approx. 5/1/1709. He has been referred to as a "husbandman" in the deedbooks.

From Bonnie Moody's file:
Husbandman. Ref: Windham V.R. (Vital Records) American Ancestory V. 4, p. 127, Essex Institute of History V. 7, p. 126. New England Historical and Geographical Record V. 71, p. 184. , also V. 5, p. 482 & V. 6, p. 587. Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families of America.

1. World Family Tree, Volume 16, Tree 0775:
As early as A.D. 1700, and after John Follett and his brother Abraham Follett (Brothers to Benjamin) had gone to Bristol County, Robert Follett seems to have given Issac Follett and Benjamin Follett (perhaps his only remaining sons) all his personal property and his 130 acres of land, his farm and nothing is taxed in Robert's name from 1700 on. August 3, 1704, Robert Follett his father, deeded to Issac and Benjamin 130 acres of "arable pasture and meadow ground". Ten acres of this land was conveyed away on December 1705. On November 4, 1708, and after the death of Robert Follett his mother, Benjamin Follett, as a "husbandman", and Patience his wife, sold for 131 pounds, and conveyed all his remaining in this 130 acres, given him and Issac by their father. (Book 26, page 40). In the deed Benjamin Follett expressly retained the right to remain in the house and have firewood until the next May 1st, 1709. From that date his name is not on the Salem tax list.

Benjamin's family then went to Windham, in the Colony of Connecticut, and their graves are in the grave yard there. Benjamin Follett died in 1752, and Patience Follett his wife, died in 1757.

Other References:

Benjamin was a Lieutenant in the French-Indian War. Patience and Benjamin were members in the 1st Church in 1726. Benjamin was born at Salem and moved to Windham, Conn. in 1709. He was a husbandman.

Notes for PATIENCE DOULEE AKA DOUGHTY:

Per Bonnie Moody on 3/2001, most sources show Patience's name as: Patience Doughty or Doutee (not Doulee).

Hi. My name is Bob Doughty; I live in Seattle. I saw your Roger Follett/Elizabeth Cady query on the GenForum. I was wondering if you are related to Benjamin Follett, baptized September 10, 1687, whose parents were Robert Follett and Persis Black? This Benjamin married Patience Doutee March 13, 1706/07 in Salem, MA. They removed to Windham, CT. Patience is said to be the daughter of Thomas Doughty and Elizabeth Bully. I understand when Benjamin and Patience removed to Windham, Patience's brother, Benjamin Doughty went with them; but nothing further is found about Benjamin Doughty. Also, I'd be interested to know if you know anything about Elizabeth (Bully) Doughty, wife of Thomas Doughty. It's said that after Thomas Doughty died, about 1705, Elizabeth also moved to Windham with her daughter, Patience. In the records of the Congregational Church at Windham, in 1726 there's an Eliz/Eliza Doughty as a communicant. If this is my Elizabeth (Bully) Doughty I'd like to find out when she died and where she's buried. Do you have any details on this family? Appreciate the help. I can provide some info on the Doughty's.

Notes for BENJAMIN FOLLETT:
Re: Benjamin (b. 1715) - Frederick Follett (son of 2nd marriage) was administrator of Benjamin's estate, per records of Luzerne County, Penn. with bond dated 4/2/1788. Must have died not long before this.

Benjamin (Jr.) bore the title Lieutenant on church records, possibly relating to service in the French War, during which he may have been taken prisoner. Records obtained from State of Connecticut indicated Benjamin served in the colonial wars and was second lieutenant of a company formed in May 1756 to repel an attack by the enemy on Lake George.

The letter of a descendant Marvin Follett in 1883 indicated Benjamin had moved to the Wyoming Valley in Penn. (after 2nd marriage to Esther) with a colony of settlers from Pomfret, VT and Connecticut by ox team. He was one of about 3 men, including an Isaac Tripp, administrating the attempts of colonists to settle the Wyoming Valley. After clashes with Tories, Indians and others, they moved back to Windham for a time, but returned to Wyoming Valley later.
---------------------------------
From Bonnie Moody file:
Married, removed Wyoming Valley PA with a colony form Pomfret, VT & CT. Had a "splendid yoke of oxen, red, with high heads, large horns, & brass knobs on their horns." Obtained gov't land . After the Wyoming Valley massacre on 30 Jun 1778, he, his wife, and son Frederick, who was scalped, came, with others, back to Windham, & lived there awhile. Then the gov't helped them get their PA land back & they returned to theWyoming Valley, PA.

Notes for ELIPHALET FOLLETT:
Eliphalet was among the settlers of the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, said to be one of the most beautiful valleys in the world, situated between two mountain ranges with the Susquehanna River running down the valley. At a town meeting held March 1, 1774, he was chosen as fourth of fifteen "listers" for the year ensuing, which may indicate he had already been in the valley for some time. He may have been among the 146 settlers of Pittston which included his father in 1769. There had been a great deal of trouble settling this valley, as it was claimed by the Six Nations of native tribes who were very unhappy with the intrusion of the colonists into this valley. Adding to this trouble was the fact that the tribes became allies of the Tories who also opposed the claim of independence of settlers in America.

Eliphalet was killed in what has been referred to as the "Wyoming Massacre" in July 1778. His wife and children fled the valley after his death, probably to Vermont.

Notes for ELIZABETH DEWEY:
After her husband, Eliphalet was killed in the Wyoming massacre in Pennsylvania, she and the children fled to either Vermont or Connecticut.

Notes for MARTIN DEWEY FOLLETT:
Martin would have been 13 years old at the time of the Wyoming Massacre in July 1778 and it is likely he fought or participated in some other way. After his father's death, he and the family returned to Vermont. Records (1778-1779) have shown he served in the Revolutionary War as a private and later as a Captain serving 3 months at Plattsburg. He also served as Captin in the War of 1812.

Records show Martin was listed prominently among a long list of the first settlers of Enosburgh, VT, as was his brother Benjamin Follett (1774-1831) and Martin served as clerk of the first proprietor's meeting held 9/8/1795. Settlement of this township occurred in the Spring of 1797.

Family stories told of Martin's many trips to Montreal and a nearby town La Prairie to sell produce of the farm and buy supplies (about 70 miles from Enosburgh). Because of the dense forests, Martin had marked trees to find his way there and back.

J.W. also stated he had lived for many years on the "old Follett place" a mile from Windham, CT which had been int he Follett family for 6 generations and where in 1758 a famous "frog fight" took place at the Follett's Pond, which was written up in Scribner's Monthly Magazine (Sept. 1878). J.W. apparently later lived in Worcester, Mass. at time of the 1882 letters.
