BRUTON FAMILY
Grandmother MINTIE MAE BRUTON'S father was BENJAMIN BENTON BRUTON b. 1847 Sparta Christian Co (previously Greene Co ) MO died aft 1920 Nevada, Vernon Co MO, and her mother was SILOAMA K. WHITECOTTON b. 1848 TN died 1907 Christian Co MO. Siloama and Benjamin were married Nov 8, 1875 in Christian Co Missouri. According to my sources Benjamin was well-educated and was listed in the 1880 census as a schoolteacher in Linden Township. Another source says that he became a Baptist minister (verified) and that, like his brother James, he joined the Union army during the Civil War at age 16 or 17 (unverified).
BENJAMIN B BRUTON did, however, enlist in the Christian Co Militia, Union or Federal Army, in 1866, after the Civil War, with a great number of his neighbors. Missouri remained a hotbed of unrest even a couple of years after the war, and it was necessary for communities to band together to protect themselves. In the enlistment records, Benjamin is listed as age 19, five feet nine inches tall with black hair, blue eyes and fair complexion.
BENJAMIN B BRUTON often signed his name B. B. Bruton. Here is a listing from "The Ministerial Directory of the Baptist Church of the United States of America" published by Oxford Press 1899 listing his education, where he preached and a list of books or tracts that he authored:
BRUTON, Benjamin Benton, Sparta, Mo.-Born, Sparta, Mo.; Stud. Mountain Home, Ark.; Mountain Dale, Mo.; Lie. June, 1871, Prcspect Ch., Mo.; Ord. Mar, '74, Mountain Dale Ch., Mo.; P. Mt. Hope, Oak Grove, Bluff Point', St. James, Antioch, Union Hill; S. Shadv Grove, New Site, Salem; P. Dent, Fian, Nauvoo, Slagle; S. Oak Flat, Bethel; Au. "The Awakened Sinner," '88; "Office Work of the Holy Spirit,"'90; "Look to Me'" 79; "God in the Storm,"'99; "The Converted Infidel," '99; "You and Me," '99.
As a Baptist minister of the gospel, he performed at least 20 marriages, possibly more, in Christian Co MO from 1875 until about 1900.
Marriages performed by B B Bruton 1875--1900
In the 1880 census BENJAMIN B BRUTON's occupation was listed as schoolteacher. By the 1900 census he was back to farming, and all of his adult children were still living at home. James J Bruton, his eldest son, was listed as age 23, working as a teacher in the 1900 census. James married Ella Adams shortly after the census was taken. Mintie Mae married Alonzo Huber in 1901, the following year.
Alonzo Huber & Mintie Mae Bruton, my grandparents, were married July 6, 1901 at the home of Mrs BB Bruton in McCracken, Christian Co MO, according to their marrige license. Apparently they stayed and worked on the Bruton family farm for at least two years. It is uncertain when exactly they moved north to Iowa, but judging from the births of their children, it appears that they lived in Christian Co MO until about 1902, then they spent a few years in Harrison, Boone Co AR (close to some of the Thompson relatives?). By 1907-1908 they were again living in Christian Co MO. Mintie's mother Siloama Whitecotton Bruton died sometime in 1907, and Mintie & Alonzo's daughter Helen Lucille Huber was born in Christian Co MO in 1908. The next child, a son Chester Bain Huber, was born 1910 in Union, Hardin Co IA, so it seems likely that they moved to Iowa 1909-1910.
By 1905 Siloama Whitecotton Bruton was in very bad health, possibly the results of a stroke, and was unable to walk (see Whitecotton/Thompson section below). According to BB Bruton's probate records from Christian Co MO, Siloama died early in 1908. She may have been in her late 50s or early 60s (birthdate uncertain). The family seemed to fall completely apart after her death. James J Bruton & his wife moved on to OK by 1910, Mintie Mae & Alonzo Huber moved to Iowa, Benjamin H Bruton died in a railway accident (not sure exactly whether or when this happened?) and Hattie S Bruton , who was born with a harelip, ended up in the Christian Co Almshouse at age 27 according to the 1910 census, and apparently died young, as she does not appear in any other census.
According to a book on the Bruton family reunion in MO 1911, Benjamin B. Bruton was institutionalized shortly before 1911 at the Nevada MO State Hospital, the reason being "insanity caused by too much Bible study." Probate records from Christian Co MO actually indicated that he was institutionalized in 1907, before Siloama died . BB Bruton was listed in the 1910 census as an inmate in the Nevada State Hospital in Vernon Co MO, age 61, and also in the 1920 Vernon Co MO census age 70. It is unknown exactly when he died. According to the Nevada MO State Hospital Cemetary Plot List, B.B. Bruton was buried row AP, column 11 in the state hospital cemetary, but there are no dates listed. The hospital has long since been torn down.
BENJAMIN B BRUTON and SILOAMA WHITECOTTON BRUTON had these children:
James J. Bruton born June 1876 Sparta MO m. Ella Adams Sept 1, 1900. Listed at father B B Bruton's home in June 1900 working as a teacher, age 23. In BB Bruton's probate records of 1907/1908, James J Bruton was indicated as recipient of BB's property, as well as recompense for being caregiver for mother Siloama Whitecotton Bruton, who died in early 1908, In 1910 lived in Muskogee co OK school teacher, sources cite him as teacher in Chadwick Christian Co MO by 1912; then 1920 missing and wife & children living in Chadwick. 1930 census shows Ella remarried & children living in Oklahoma Co OK, James in Vernon Co MO state hospital; uncertain what happened to him after that. Children were Bonnie Lela Bruton b 1902 m Math Adams from Christian Co, Mance or Vance Bruton b 1912, Jess or Jesse J Bruton b 1915. Mintie Mae Bruton born August 1878 Sparta MO m. Alonzo Huber in 1901 eventually moved to Iowa after 1908. Sometimes spelled her name "Minttie" Hattie S. Bruton born Dec 1880 Sparta MO listed in 1910 census McCracken twp, age 27 in the Christian Co Almshouse. Was born with a harelip and possibly other disabilities. Died Aug 23, 1913 McCracken, Christian co MO according to her death record. She was an inmate at the poor farm. Benjamin H. Bruton born April 1888 Sparta MO married ?? died in railway accident, probably before 1910 when death records began to be kept in Christian County.
James J. Bruton born June 1876 Sparta MO m. Ella Adams Sept 1, 1900. Listed at father B B Bruton's home in June 1900 working as a teacher, age 23. Great Grandfather BENJAMIN B. BRUTON'S father was THOMAS BRUTON born Oct 18, 1811 and his mother was LAVINA "VINIE" SCOTT, daughter of THOMAS SCOTT b abt 1780 VA, and ELIZABETH JONES b abt 1782 prob Granville Co, NC. ELIZABETH was the daughter of NICHOLAS JONES b 1761 VA & MARTHA PATSY MOORE.
For more info on the SCOTT, MOORE & JONES line (a work in progress), please see my Rootsweb Worldconnect online family tree bruton2
THOMAS BRUTON was born Oct 18, 1811 in Greenville South Carolina and Lavina Scott was born 1815 possibly in Sparta, White Co TN. They were married 1838? and lived for a time in McNairy Co TN; Thomas and his wife and eldest son appear in the 1840 McNairy Co TN census. Shortly after, Thomas and Lavina homesteaded land in Missouri. Later documents say that Thomas was unable to farm his land because he was "a cripple", so his sons farmed it. Thomas was well-educated and was apparently the first schoolteacher in Webster Co. Thomas and his son James held a large amount of land, about 500 acres, which eventually became the town of Sparta MO. Sources: "A Reminsicent History of the Ozark Region" and "Christian Co: It's First Hundred Years" See links below for more information
THOMAS BRUTON must have died before 1860, for his wife LAVINA SCOTT BRUTON is listed as a widow with children in that census. LAVINA SCOTT BRUTON died Nov 29, 1880 in Linden township, Christian County Missouri. An inquest into her death was held at that time, with three of her children testifying that she had hung herself. The testimonies suggest to me that she may have been suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's disease, although it was not known as a condition at that time.
I do not have information on where THOMAS BRUTON or LAVINA BRUTON are buried at this time, but it would certainly be in or near Sparta, Christian Co MO.

Great grandfather BENJAMIN B. BRUTON's brother HON. JAMES J. BRUTON joined the first the 14th Missouri State Militia Volunteer Calvary company D (Union or Federal Army) at age 17, in April of 1862. One source says that he served as a bugler. Later he was transferred to the 4th Missouri State Militia (Union or Federal) Army, Company M. (His gravestone shows he was a Confederate, and this is not correct according to his National Archive Civil War Pension Record and many other sources). James J Bruton survived the Civil War and returned home in 1865, and married Margeret Farmer Nov 11, 1866 in Christian Co Missouri..The Bruton/Farmer line is very well documented. James J. Bruton studied law and owned and operated a very successful store and a partnership with William G. Holland and H.H. Lee in the Sparta Roller Mill. He was the largest land holder at one time in Christian Co, and served in political office as deputy sheriff and state legislature representing his district. When he died in 1898 he was prosecuting attorney of Christian Co.
James J. and Margeret Farmer Bruton had two children: James W. Bruton and Lillie Leotta Bruton. James W Bruton attended medical school , studied in Europe and returned to Sparta to practice medicine. He married Pearl L Davidson and after marrying , moved his practice to Ozark, MO.
After the death of his first wife Margaret Farmer, Hon J J Bruton married Ollie/Ellie J Dryden.
HON. JAMES J BRUTON OBITUARY from The Bruton Family Reunion book by his uncle, Dr Jesse Thompson Bruton , p 11-12
"It is with feelings of deep sorrow that we have to record & publish the death of Hon. James J Bruton, of Ozark, which occurred very suddenly Wednesday evening April 6, at the home of Mr Hoge on Blue Ridge, about seven miles east of Sparta. The cause of his death was an attack of apoplexy. This results from the breaking of some blood vessel in the brain, thus allowing the blood to flow out an coagulate around the delicate vital organ. This produces brain pressure from which the patient soon dies in a comatose state. This attact came on Mr Bruton about 9:45, and he died at 11:45.
Hon J. J. Bruton was one of the most worthy and well-known citizens of Christian County. He was born just a little south of where the village of Sparta now stands (then a part of Greene County) Feb 22, 1845, and died April 6, 1896, aged 53 years, one month and fourteen days.
His father, Thomas Bruton, entered about 500 acres of land in this vicinity in 1845, while this son was only an infant. Here the father, assisted by his wife and children, developed a farm upon which was reared a noble family in those days of pioneers.
Young James, the subject of this sketch, remained at home and assisted his mother on the farm until he was seventeen, at which age he joined the Union Army, April 7, 1862, and enlisted in the service of his country. After being in many skirmishes and hard-fought battles, he was honorably discharged April 7, 1865 , having served exactly three years.
The war over, the soldier returned home and became the farmer, the teacher, the merchant, the lawyer, the respected and honored Christian citizen. Mr Bruton was the founder of Sparta, having built the first house and started the first business on what is now Main Street, about the year 1869. He made this his home until six or eight years ago, since which time he has resided at Ozark.
He was always a patriotic, public-spirited citizen, ready to do anything in power for the material, moral and intellectual development of his country.
By the suffrage of his fellow citizens he once filled the office of Prosecuting Attorney, and once represented his county in the Legislature.
He is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and also of the following secret fraternities: Free and Accepted Mason, Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, and Grand Army of the Republic.
He was buried in the family graveyard near Sparta with Masonic honors, the other lodges joining in the procession and participating in the ceremonies. About one thousand people attended the funeral services, which shows at once the high esteem in which this worthy citizen was held. The deceased was an affectionate husband and father, always kind to the members of his family. He leaves two children, Dr J W Bruton and Mrs W G Holland of this place; a faithful wife; several stepchildren, and a host of other relatives, to all of whom we extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy in this their sad bereavement."

He also became a schoolteacher while they were living in McNairy Co TN. I am uncertain at this time just when & where he received his education. She is listed in the 1830 Spartanburg SC census as head of household; many young children boys & girls, one middle aged woman, and one woman over 70-80, probably Susannah herself.

Great X 5 grandfather DAVID BRUTON Sr b abt 1736-1740s Surry Co VA? Southampton Co VA? NC?, was, possibly, the son of JAMES BRUTON b abt 1710-1720 Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA, and (possibly) MARY BRANCH (unverified as yet as wife) , daughter of FRANCIS BRANCH and ELIZABETH NORWOOD of Isle of Wight Co, Surry Co & Southampton Co VA. JAMES & MARY (BRANCH) BRUTON may have died in any of those three VA counties, or they may have moved on, as so many in the did, to North Carolina--as did many of JAMES' uncles, cousins & other relatives from Surry Co VA.
JAMES BRUTON b 1710-1720 is mentioned in the 1735 will of his grandfather, JAMES BRUTON b abt 1660s of Surry Co VA who married MARY SEWARD, see below. However he is not mentioned in the 1737/1739 will of his father, WILLIAM BRUTON, see below.
According to the research of Thomas Gambrell, all of JAMES BRUTON's (b1710-1720) sons, including DAVID, migrated to Anson Co NC & vicinity as per land & census records.,and JAMES BRUTON b 1710-1720 was there himself in the 1770s, which I have not been able to verify. However, recent research has shown that several of JAMES' relatives, uncles, cousins, etc., did move southward from Surry Co VA to Craven, Johnston, Dobbs & Edgecombe County NC before the Revolutionary War. So it is not beyond the realm of possibilities that JAMES BRUTON b 1714 could have done so also.
MARY BRANCH, daughter of FRANCIS BRANCH and ELIZABETH NORWOOD (both from families that inhabited Surry, Isle of Wight & Southampton Co VA) was married to a male Bruton/Brewton sometime before 1750, as per the 1750 Southampton Co VA will of her mother, ELIZABETH (NORWOOD) BRANCH, which shows her daughter as "MARY BREWTER" (transcription error of "Brewton"); some researchers indicate MARY's surname as "Brewster", but that would not make sense, since in the next line of the will, ELIZABETH (NORWOOD) BRANCH clearly names granddaughter "SARAH BREWTON". At this time I don't know for sure which of the early colonial VA male Bruton/Brewtons MARY BRANCH actually married, but I am placing her with JAMES BRUTON b 1710-1720 for the time being until I find more records. There were simply not that many male BRUTONs living in that area of Virginia during the time period in question, if records are to be believed!
JAMES BRUTON and his wife, (possibly) MARY BRANCH had the following children:, all possibly born Surry Co VA, Southampton Co VA, or North Carolina.
David Bruton Sr b abt 1736 -1740s prob Surry Co VA? Sarah Brewton/Bruton (unverified) b bf 1750 prob Surry or Southamption Co VA
Great X 6 grandfather JAMES BRUTON b abt 1710-1720 prob Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA was the son of WILLIAM BRUTON b abt 1690s Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA and an unknown first wife; WILLIAM married 2nd, abt 1723, SARAH BINNS, daughter of THOMAS BINNS III & JANE HART of Surry Co VA (See will below). WILLIAM BRUTON wrote his will in 1737 and died in 1739 Surry Co VA; curiously he did not leave land, slaves, or other property to or even mention son JAMES, who was mentioned by name in the 1735 Surry Co VA will of WILLIAM's father, JAMES BRUTON who married MARY SEWARD, see below.
The lack of land in WILLIAM BRUTON's will is extremely curious, since his mother MARY SEWARD was bequeathed Surry Co VA land from her uncle ROBERT CAUFIELD in his Jan 1691 will. That land was supposed to go to her heirs upon her death, and if no heirs, then to husband JAMES BRUTON. This is the only indication I have seen of land being owned by the BRUTON family in Surry Co VA. However, for some reason it was not passed on to JAMES & MARY's only son & male heir, WILLIAM. It seems logical that he would inherit the land. But WILLIAM's own 1737/1739 will makes no mention whatsoever of land. So far I have not found any indication that the land was sold. I have yet to find the will of MARY SEWARD BRUTON, which may help to clarify More research to come.
My current theory at this time is that SARAH BINNS was WILLIAM BRUTON's second wife, and that the property he was bequeathing in his will, slaves & livestock, was from the BINNS family and not the BRUTON family, as per notes above. In THOMAS BINNS III's 1723, daughter SARAH is not referred to as "Sarah Bruton" but "Sarah Binns", which makes me suspect that SARAH & WILLIAM were not married until 1723 or after. JAMES BRUTON, son of WILLIAM, who died 1739, was born likely 1714-1720, making the possibility of a first wife quite plausible.
1736 April 21, Surry Co VA; Bond of BENJAMIN BELL, CHARLES CHAMPION and WILLIAM BRUTEN(BRUTON) for BENJAMIN BELL as guardian to MARY CHAMPION, an orphan.
Source: "Surry County Virginia Deeds and Estate Accounts 1734-1755" by William Lindsay Hopkins. Note: MARY CHAMPION was the daughter of BENJAMIN CHAMPION I and his wife ELIZABETH WILLIAMS. Both were deceased by 1736, as per their Surry Co VA wills.
Clearly there was some kind of close relationship between WILLIAM BRUTON and the CHAMPION and BELL families of Surry Co VA, and particularly with Mary CHAMPION, as both other men named in the court record were closely related to her--Charles CHAMPION was Mary's brother, and Benjamin BELL was her brother-in-law. Why else would WILLIAM BRUTON put up money for her care, if she was not a close relative??
I now suspect that WILLIAM BRUTON's sister ELIZABETH BRUTON b 1690s-1700 may have married BENJAMIN CHAMPION II, brother to both CHARLES CHAMPION & MARY CHAMPION. Thus WILLIAM would have been at very least a close in-law. Note: BENJAMIN CHAMPION II and his wife ELIZABETH were living in Edgecombe/Halifax Co NC before 1738, when BENJAMIN sold all of his remaining Surry Co VA land.
GEORGE BRUTON (relationship unknown) b 1710-1720 witnessed the 1737 writing of the will of WILLIAM BRUTON. While I don't know the actual relationship between GEORGE & WILLIAM BRUTON, I am placing him as an unverified son of WILLIAM BRUTON and the unverified first wife, see below, until more records can be found.
In the name of God Amen. I, William Bruton/Brewton of Lawnes Creek Parish in the County of Surry, Virginia, being very sick of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same but knowing how many ways the life of a man may be abridged have thought it fit to make and constitute and ordain this my last will and testament, and for that temporal estate it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow on me I dispose in form and manner following viz - I give to my sister Mary thirty shillings credit in a store. I give and bequeath to my sister Ann thirty shillings credit in a store.. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah three young negroes, viz Steaven, Tom, Jenny. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth one negro boy called Abraham and the first two children my negro wench Nan shall bring and raise to the age of seven years old. I give and bequeath to each of my daughters a feather bed and furniture and six pewter dishes and six head of cattle apeace. I give and bequeath to my Dear and Loving Wife all the rest of my Estate of what nature and quality so ever and I do nominate my dear and loving wife and my good friend Charles Binns to be my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of July in 1737.

Great X 7 grandfather WILLIAM BRUTON was the only son of JAMES BRUTON b abt 1660s Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA and MARY SEWARD, b 1660s, daughter of WILLIAM SEWARD and his first wife, ELIZABETH CAULFIELD/CAUFIELD, who died around 1670. WILLIAM SEWARD married 2nd to ANN/ANNE BECHINOE, had several more children, and died in 1703 Surry Co VA as per his will.
JAMES BRUTON & MARY SEWARD were likely married around 1680-1690 in Surry Co VA.
1691 Jan 2 Surry Co VA; Will of ROBERT CAUFIELD; to neice ELIZABETH, wife of WILLIAM HOLT, land purchased of William Gray, for want of heirs, to go to WILLIAM HOLT. To neice MARY, wife of JAMES BRUTON, land purchased of JOSEPH ROGERS . If not heirs, to JAMES BRUTON.
This is the only indication I have seen of land being owned by the BRUTON family in Surry Co VA.
1703 May 4, Surry Co VA: Will of WILLIAM SEWARD; to daughters MARY BRUTON and ELIZABETH HOLT, each a pewter dish.
All of WILIAM SEWARD's land was left to his children by Ann/Anne Bechinoe.
JAMES BRUTON appears in Surry Co VA tax records from about 1680s until early 1700s, as far as I've researched, and he appears to have lived on the same land from the time of his marriage until his death, probably the piece of land given to his wife MARY SEWARD BRUTON by her uncle ROBERT CAUFIELD as per the will mentioned above. I have not been able to discern what happened to this peice of land. It was supposed to pass to MARY SEWARD BRUTON's heirs, and if no heirs would revert to husband JAMES BRUTON. Curiously, their son and only male heir WILLIAM BRUTON makes no mention at all of land in his will. I have yet to find MARY SEWARD BRUTON's will, which may clarifiy the situation. More research to come.

THOMPSON FAMILY
Great grandmother SILOAMA K. WHITECOTTON was born abt 1848 TN, daughter of SARAH THOMPSON b 1820s TN and MONROE WHITECOTTON (aka JAMES MONROE) b 1825 AL I have finally been able to verify this through my 1st cousin Ron Shutt, who has transcribed oral history from his mother Inez Huber Shutt, grandaughter of Siloama K Whitecotton Bruton. In these transcribed records, my aunt Inez indicates that her great grandfather was Monroe Whitecotton who married Sarah Thompson. This adds credence to all the census info and Thompson family research.
I owe a great debt to the research of Lela Hall of Oldfield, MO, now deceased, who was the great grandaughter of another Thompson sister, Malinda Thompson b 1828. Lela's research was sent to me by 4th cousin Eyvon Sanders of Ozark MO, who is a descendent of Joseph Hughes and Elizabeth Burkhart (see 1870 &1880 Christian Co census below). Joseph was1st cousin to great grandmother Siloama K Whitecotton, her sister Sophrona E Whitecotton, and her brother James J (Joseph?) Whitecotton.
LELA HALL'S FAMILY ORAL HISTORY VERSION OF OUR THOMPSON CONNECTION
Transcribed from letters by Lela Hall written to Alta Thompson Stewart in the 1980s (blue comments are mine--Betty T)
"My great grandmother Melinda Thompson married a Whitecotton, a Cherokee, and they had three children: Maryline (b abt 1845 Bradley co? Chattanooga? TN), Daniel Jackson (b about1846) and George W (b about 1847). Before leaving Tennessee for Arkansas, and while Maryline was an infant, they separated, and he (the Whitecotton man) later married great grandmother's sister Sarah Thompson and they had three children; 2 daughters: Siloama--Bruton; Frona (Sophrona)--Hopper; and son Joe. Later they separated and Sarah married a Mr. Griffin. (Nathan Griffin) She lived with James and Siller Mowery (Melvina Priscilla Thompson, Sarah's sister) in Christian Co MO later in her life (verified 1880 census). The Mowerys decided to move to Brushy Knob area in Douglas Co MO (which is where they are buried) When they did that your Uncle Bill (William J. Thompson?) took her in with him and I think she died in his house (She died 1889 and is buried at Old Boston Cemetary in Christian Co MO next to Avery Thompson b 1820 d 1892; Melinda Thompson b 1828 d 1886; and Maryline Thompson Hall b 1845 d 1874.
Sarah's three children went by the name Whitecotton, whereas Malinda's didn't; Malinda's went by the name Thompson (They also went by surname Riddle, so Malinda must have remarried before the 1860 census in Arkansas)
In 1905 Siloama Bruton visited her cousins George W and Sarah Thompson at their home in Oldfield MO. Siloama wasn't in very good health at the time she visited; she had a stroke or was crippled with arthritis; she would sit in a rocking chair and someone would pull the chair from room to room. Evidently she couldn't walk. She died not long after she went back to her home. (this is true--she died in 1907) She is buried near Ozark, MO.
In 1911 Frona (Sophrona Whitecotton Hopper) visited her cousin George W and Sarah Thompson at their home in Oldfield MO. She spent Thanksgiving holidays with them, then returned to her home in Montana. Not much is known about her afterward; she is believed to have died sometime in the 1920s. (According to MO birth certificate records,Sophrona had at least 6 children with Tilford Hopper, the youngest being Earnest Otto Hopper b Feb 4, 1892 in Aurora, Lawrence Co MO. They moved around a great deal, living in Douglas, Christian, Lawrence and Jasper Co MO. It appears that Tilford Hopper was in trouble with the law several times in Christian Co MO in the late 1800s. I have never been able to find any record of them living in Montana. Sophrona was living with her son Earnest Otto Hopper in Des Moines Iowa as late at 1917, when he registered for the draft in WWI. See below for more records on Sophrona Whitecotton Hopper)
There is no info on their brother Joe or Joseph Whitecotton. It is thought that he lived and died in Christian Co MO. (He must have either died young , as he does not appear in any other records after 1850 census with the Thompson or Whitecotton family)
See more about James Monroe Whitecotton in WHITECOTTON Section below

None of these people could read or write, and neither could the census taker, apparently! There are a number of errors in spelling, age & birthplace as well, but this is for sure the remnants of the Thompson family in Christian Co MO after the Civil War. And in nearby Taney Co, living all together:

This entire family is listed under one residence. Also living next door was the family of Angeline McAnally, a widow from TN with 5 children..
Malinda Riddle, Elizabeth Newman, and Louisa Hughs are all daughters of Joseph and Jane Thompson. (I find it interesting that all three of them were widowed at a young age. Could all of their husbands have perished in the Mexican War of 1846-1848? ) Josiah and Alexander were their sons. The rest of the family listed are all grandchildren for Joseph and Jane Thompson.
Sarah Thompson Whitecotton was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Thomas and Mary Thompson Goodwin in town of Ooltewah, Hamilton Co TN in 1860: I have yet to find her ex-husband, James Monroe Whitecotton.
Siloama Whitecotton was living with James and Priscilla Thompson Mowery in 1860 census, in Marion Co AR, White River twp, which was only a few miles from Carroll Co AR.

Also missing is the mysterious Emeline Thompson who doesn't appear with the family in any other census but 1850.
John M Thompson and Isaac Avery Thompson, brothers of Sarah Thompson Whitecotton, did not move to Arkansas. They are listed in Bradley County in 1860 census.
There was also a William Thompson living in Bradley Co TN in 1860 who may be another brother, possibly the "Willis" mentioned in Lela Hall's letters.

1840 BRADLEY CO TN CENSUS
In the 1840 Bradley co TN census Joseph Thompson and family were living next door to James Mowery and family, and Thomas Goodwin and wife. 1840 census did not list names of any family member except head of household. James Mowery & Melvina Priscilla Thompson were married Oct 4, 1838 in Roane Co TN.
Prior to 1840, the area that the Thompsons & Mowerys settled in was Indian land, complete wilderness, and was not yet part of any county.
THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH THOMPSON b 1797-1801 NC
JOSEPH ISAAC or ISAAC JOSEPH THOMPSON b 1797-1802 prob Burke Co NC died 1896 MO buried John Harvill Farm Cemetary, Christian Co MO m. JANE or VIRGINIA JANE unknown, who is said to have been buried Green Forest, Boone Co AR.
New research on my part shows that JOSEPH is likely the son of ISAAC THOMAS THOMPSON b abt 1755 near Dan River VA (prob Pittsylvania Co) died 1839 Burke Co NC, spouse unknown. ISAAC fought in the Revolutionary War in Rowan/Burke Co NC, and is listed in census there from 1790-1830. He owned a great deal of land. His eldest daughter, SARAH THOMPSON b abt 1785 married Joseph Baker.
JOSEPH THOMPSON is listed in the 1820 Burke Co NC census, living near old ISAAC THOMPSON, a young couple in their twenties with a young son and a young daughter. JOSEPH appears in the 1830 Burke Co NC census as a couple in their thirties with 4 sons and 6 daughters. I have not been able to find any other Josephs in NC of the correct age and with the correct number of children. JOSEPH THOMPSON does not appear in Burke Co NC census after 1830.
JOSEPH THOMPSON fought in the war of 1812, Capt Stevilies' 7th regiment, company 1 Burke Co NC militia, same regiment as his probable brother in law, Joseph Baker. JOSEPH THOMPSON also sold land to Joseph Baker in 1821, but the deed wasn't transferred until 1843, and then the signatures had to be verified by Elrod Poteet (Old ISAAC THOMPSON is also listed in this record). JOSEPH THOMPSON was also listed as a soldier in the Cherokee removal of 1838 in Burke co NC. So far there have been no other records found for JOSEPH in Burke Co after 1838. The earliest verified record we have for this family is the marriage record of his daughter MELVINA PRISCILLA "SILLER" THOMPSON and James Mowery, Oct 1838 Roane Co TN. Another daughter, MARY LUCINDA THOMPSON married Thomas Gaspaway Goodwin in 1839 in Monroe Co TN. All three families are listed living together in the 1840 Bradley Co TN census.
"Many years ago Isaac Thompson made churn, tubs, water pails, dough trays, barrels, butter paddles, butter molds and piggins. WHITECOTTON FAMILY
Great grandmother SILOAMA K WHITECOTTON'S father was MONROE WHITECOTTON (aka JAMES MONROE WHITECOTTON) b. Oct 1825 AL. Sometimes he spelled his name WHITECOTTEN. If family stories, marriage records and census records are to believed, MONROE was married to five different women: Malinda Thompson, Sarah Thompson (married abt 1847 TN), Mrs. Salina Smith (1869 Jackson Co AL), Adeline Barnes (1879 Jackson Co AL ) and Mrs. Nancy E Clouse (1896 Jackson Co AL). MONROE married Nancy very late in life; he was listed as her husband at age 74 in the 1900 Jackson Co AL census, and she was listed as his wife age 40. Her children from her previous marriage to an unknown Clouse were listed as stepsons & stepdaughters of MONROE (see below).
The marriage records from Jackson Co AL all indicate that the James Monroe Whitecotton who married three times in that county was born in 1825. AL. No other person of that name in the Whitecotton family was born in 1825 AL, so I am assuming that this was the same person who married repeatedly, and was the same person who married the two Thompson girls.
Thompson family members have long said that our Whitecotton gg grandfather fought in both the Mexican War of 1848-1846 and also the Civil War. In early Dec 2001, I received info from the Tennessee State Library & Archives that Monroe Whitecotton did indeed serve in the Mexican War and received a pension. He enlisted Nov 9, 1847 at Athens, McMinn Co TN, and served in the 5th Tennessee Volunteers (foot soldiers), Company C under Col George B McClellan (of later Civil War fame). His name was spelled White Cotten on the records.
This Mexican War info, the census records listed below and the transcribed oral family history from my aunt Inez Huber Shutt adds credence to my belief that Monroe Whitecotton was my gg grandfather, the elusive Whitecotton mentioned in the Thompson family records.
MY OWN WHITECOTTON RESEARCH
Recently I found a census entry for 1850 Morgan Co AL, Decatur division # 11:
Monroe Whitecotton age 23 b AL occupation laborer Sarah Whitecotton age 21 b. NC wife Chiloma K. Whitecotton age 2 b TN daughter James J Whitecotton age 5 months b AL son
Monroe Whitecotton age 23 b AL occupation laborer
Sarah Whitecotton age 21 b. NC wife
Chiloma K. Whitecotton age 2 b TN daughter
James J Whitecotton age 5 months b AL son
This is as close as I have ever come to finding a match for Siloama K Whitecotton in age, name, place and date. Decatur AL is very close to Chattanooga in Hamilton Co TN, and Georgetown in Bradley Co TN, where Sarah Thompson was raised. Also it has been noted that Siloama had a brother (named Joseph in Lela Hall's research). Siloama's sister Sophronia/Safronie Whitecotton was born about 1854, so does not appear in this census.
Right down the road in Decatur AL 1850 census I found:
Happy Whitecotton age 41 mother Isaac M Whitecotton age 21 son Elizabeth Whitecotton age 18 daughter William Whitecotton age 14 son Pleasant Whitecotton (m) age 11 son Harrison Whitecotton age 8 son
Happy Whitecotton age 41 mother
Isaac M Whitecotton age 21 son
Elizabeth Whitecotton age 18 daughter
William Whitecotton age 14 son
Pleasant Whitecotton (m) age 11 son
Harrison Whitecotton age 8 son
These are James Monroe Whitecotton's mother, brothers and sister (except for one brother Lindley M. Whitecotton b 1823 who married Susan Horn and lived in TN until 1860). Isaac M married Sarah Smith and lived most of his life in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co TN. Apparently their father Moses Whitecotton was deceased by 1850 and possibly before 1840, as he does not appear with Happy in the 1840 census.
Isaac, Pleasant and Harrison all fought in the Civil War in TN (see below) Lindley fought (first Confederate then Union army) in Johnson Co AR, where he lived.
**So far have not been able to find JAMES MONROE WHITECOTTON n any census for 1860; he was most likely in southern TN or in northern AL, where his uncle & grandmother lived.**

This census record verifies and corroborates the marriage record found for Monroe & Mrs. Nancy E. Clouse Sept 14, 1896 Jackson co AL.
James Monroe Whitecotton must have died between 1900 and 1910; he appears in the 1900 Jackson Co AL census, but does not appear on the 1910 census or later death records for that county. Death records were not kept before 1910 in Jackson Co AL.

Very little is known about HAPPY, wife of MOSES WHITECOTTON. She may be our Cherokee connection. It appears that she died after 1850 in Morgan Co AL, as she disappears off census records after that.
Great great great grandfather MOSES WHITECOTTON'S father was ISAAC NEWTON WHITECOTTON b abt 1774 either Stafford Co VA, or Hampshire co VA/ W VA, and his mother was ELIZABETH STUMP. b abt 1779 Hampshire VA/Hardy Co West VA, daughter of MICHAEL STUMP II and SARAH HUGHES.
ISAAC NEWTON WHITECOTTON & ELIZABETH STUMP were married abt 1797 in Hardy Co West VA. After marriage they moved to Knox then Pulaski co KY in the 1820s and ultimately settled in Madison Co AL by 1830 census, next door to his son James Whitecotton who married Louisa Turner, son MOSES WHITECOTTON who married HAPPY Unknown, and daughters Sarah and Nancy. . ISAAC NEWTON WHITECOTTON & ELIZABETH STUMP had the following children:

The family of great x 4 grandmother ELIZABETH STUMP who married ISAAC NEWTON WHITECOTTON appears to have originated in Baden Germany and Zurich, Switzerland, and is connected to the colonial Neff family, also German/Swiss.
ELIZABETH STUMP's father MICHAEL STUMP II (who married SARAH HUGHES) did fight in the Revolutionary War in VA and has been used to document DAR lineage. The Stump/Neff family of Pennsylvania and Hampshire Co VA/Hardy CoWest VA is extremely well documented. There is a publication entitled "Neff-Stump Family with Hardy Co VA Connections" which was authored by J W Neff, and a book online "Michael Stump 1707-1768" by Thurman Stump, which some have taken issue with, but it is a good place to start research..
MICHAEL STUMP II b April 8, 1744 prob Tulpehocken, Lancaster Co PA, was the son of (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr b abt 1709-1714 probably Germany, and most likely ANNA CATHERINE NEFF b Nov 27, 1716 Michelfield, Baden, Germany. There is a marriage record in the Tulpehocken Lutheran Church in Lancaster Co PA for this couple dated Sept 10, 1739. By 1749 they were living in Frederick Co VA, as per land deed & survey records. And by 1750 they were in Hampshire Co VA, which part would become eventually Hardy Co WV. (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr died 1768 Hampshire Co VA as per his will, see below.
SOME RESEARCHERS HAVE INDICATED THAT (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr MARRIED A CATHERINE OR MARIA CATHERINE WHITECOTTON. THIS IS COMPLETELY FALSE!!!
1) THE WHITECOTTONS WERE A SMALL FAMILY FROM ENGLAND WHO MIGRATED TO VIRGINIA AND HAVE BEEN TRACED & DOCUMENTED.
2) NONE OF THEM EVER LIVED IN EITHER GERMANY OR PENNSYLVANIA.
3) THE RESEARCHERS IN QUESTION HAVE SHOWN THIS "CATHERINE WHITECOTTON" AS HAVING A BIRTHDATE OF 1683/1684 GERMANY AND A DEATH DATE OF 1783-1784 VA.
4) THE WILL OF CATHERINE STUMP (SEE BELOW) WAS WRITTEN IN 1783, BUT PROVED IN 1795, CATHERINE STUMP WAS STILL ALIVE 1790, WHEN SHE HAD A LEGAL DISPUTE WITH HER SON GEORGE STUMP (SEE BELOW). SHE ACTUALLY DIED IN 1795.
CLEARLY THE INFORMATION ON "CATHERINE OR MARIA CATHERINE WHITECOTTON" IS INCORRECT!!!!! USING THE DATES GIVEN BY THE RESEARCHERS IN QUESTION, CATHERINE, THE WIFE OF (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr WOULD HAVE BEEN 112 YEARS OLD WHEN SHE DIED!!!
Another fact in favor of ANNA CATHERINE NEFF as spouse of (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr is the fact that ANNA CATHERINE NEFF's brother LEONARD NEFF (NAVE,NAFF, etc) homesteaded the land right adjacent to (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr, and the two plots were surveyed the same day in Aug 1749 (see "Virginia Northen Neck Land Grants 1742-1775 Vol II"). (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr also named one of his sons LEONARD STUMP.
Yet another factor to consider is that the historically documented migratory path in of the German immigrants, which was from PA & MD through Frederick, Shenandoah & Hampshire Co VA (now West VA) in the 1740s. For a discussion of this, see "Huber--Hoover History" by Harry M Hoover publ 1928 p 32-33. See also "From the Rhine to the Shenandoah" by Daniel W. Bly.
It seems quite plausable to me that, like so many other German immigrants of that time period, (HANS ?) MICHAEL STUMP Sr and ANNA CATHERINE NEFF came first from Germany to Pennsylvania, married there, and then migrated to Hampshire/Hardy Co Virginia., now West Virginia. The impetus for the German migration was available land, which the Stump & Neff/Nave family found there.

William Fountain's company, which marched to Charlottesville VA to join the Regiment commanded by Col Woodford & Lt Col Charles Scott. This unit marched to Williamsburg VA and to "Long Bridge" where the regiment met & defeated the British in one of the first battles of the Revolution in Dec 1775, this according to James Whitecotton's Revolutionary War Pension Application and several other sources. Apparently he also re-enlisted in 1778, when he served under Col George Rogers Clark (of Lewis & Clark fame) in Kaskaskia Illinois to help defend settlers against the Indians. He apparently was enlisted in Illinois from 1778 until about 1782, according to several books & documents. He is listed in the 1782 and 1784 census list for Hampshire Co VA(orignally Frederick co VA). At one point his Capt was Abraham Chapline, who became a lifelong friend.
According to a letter on the life of Abraham Chapline written by W B Harrison in 1884:
"Having been a Captain in the Revolutionary War, after its conclusion he (Abraham Chapline) was sent with a company of men to Kaskaskia in what is now the state of Illinois to operate as a check upon the Indians. While therein a fortification consisting of a number of cabins called block-houses, he gave some order to which James Whitecotton, one of his men, took exception, and said to some of the men, if he was on equal terms with his Captain, he would whip him for certain for that order. The Captain (Abraham Chapline) having learned that Whitecotton was chafing under the supposed injury, called his men up and said to Whitecotton--I learn that you take exception to my order and resent that you are not on equal term with me so as to obtain satisfaction; now if the men of this company will pledge their honor to keep the matter a perfect secret until we shall be mustered out of the service, I will cheerfully lay down my commission long enough to give you the desired satisfaction.
"Of course the promise of secrecy was quickly given, and the two men weighing each about 145 pounds went easily into the settlement with their fists. Finally the Captain threw Whitecotton, who finding he was overpowered spoke the word "enough" and the affair was ended. From that time forth so long as those men lived, they were the most devoted friends.
"Whitecotton was a poor thriftless man, and I knew him to be over 99 years of age. He and his Captain resided more that 30 miles apart, but once a year Whitecotton walked that distance to spend a week or two with his former Captain who was always glad to see him."(letter of W B Harrison, 1884)
After his service in the Army, JAMES moved to Hampshire Co VA by 1782, and was there in the 1784 and 1790 census. After that he moved his family to Washington Co KY, where they lived from 1790s-1830. He eventually moved to Mercer Co KY in the 1830s, where he applied for his Rev War pension, and where his friend Abraham Chapline lived. By the 1840 census JAMES was living in Marion county KY. JAMES died at the age of 99 years on June 7, 1849 at Pleasant Run, Marion co KY, and is said to be buried in Washington county KY.

Great x 6 grandfather GEORGE JR WHITECOTTON'S father was GEORGE WHITECOTTON b abt 1707 d 1744 Overwarton Parish, Stafford Co VA and his mother was BRIDGET UNKNOWN. Apparently Bridget had two other husbands after George's death in 1744. She married 2nd) to William McConchie, as per Register of Overwharton Parish Stafford Co VA), and had one son Richard McConchie born in 1748. William McConchie died before 1750, and Bridget married 3rd) to Stephen Pilcher on Dec 1, 1750, and may have had several children by him.
GEORGE WHITECOTTON Sr's will inventory is posted on my Rootsweb Worldconnect online family tree bruton2. His will was probated April 10, 1744, with his wife Bridgett Whitecotton signing for the estate on April 9, 1745. GEORGE WHITECOTTON Sr, like his father MEALY WHITECOTTON, was a tobacco planter, but apparently did not own slaves--or at least avoided being taxed on them.
GEORGE WHITECOTTON & BRIDGET had the following children:

Great x 7 grandfather GEORGE WHITECOTTON'S father was MEALY WHITECOTTON Sr b abt 1687-88 d 1733 Overwharton Parish,Stafford Co VA and his mother was SARAH FOOTE b June 27, 1676 London, England, who was daughter of RICHARD FOOTE and HESTER HAYWARD. RICHARD FOOTE was a merchant from Cornwall, England, who purchased lands for himself & his father in law NICHOLAS HAYWARD.. Richard did travel between the colonies, but his family lived in London England. They survived the plague of 1600s and the Great Fire of London. After RICHARD FOOTE's death, his son Richard Jr Foote inherited his lands in the colony and emigrated to VA. According to court documents concerning Richard Sr's estate, SARAH FOOTE was previously married to Arthur Bradshaw even as late as 1703. It is unknown exactly when she emigrated & married Mealy Whitecotton, but her son George Whitecotton was born about 1707. MEALY or MEALEY is a variant spelling of MEELY, MALEY, MALLEY or O'MALLEY. There was a John Meely living in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co VA in 1723. More research to come.
MEALY WHITECOTTON Sr listed 1724 in the Register of Overwharton Parish, Tobacco Tender list from S Side Potomac Creek to Lower end of parish: Mealy Whitecotton listed with son Husband Foote Whitecotton & Timothy Carty as tenders of 10,416 tobacco plants. MEALY WHITECOTTON Sr apparently did not own slaves, or at least avoided being taxed on them.
On July 11, 1733, the inventory of the estate of MEALY WHITECOTTON Sr, deceased was entered into court records for Stafford Co VA, Record book M pp 238-9. After the payment & collection of debts, Sarah Whitecotton, his widow, then appears in court to sign the final papers on June 15, 1737.

Great x 8 grandfather MEALY WHITECOTTON's father was ISHAM WHITECOTTON b abt 1656 in possibly Westmoreland Co Va (which part became Stafford Co VA after 1664), and his mother was ANN AXTON, daughter of JOHN CULLAN AXTON, b abt 1642 VA & unknown ISHAM? MEALEY? HUSBAND?
JOHN AXTON had a legal dispute with MARY MANSELL (BLAGRAVE) (HEARD) & family over 600 acres of land in Stafford Co VA, for transcriptions of the Stafford Co VA court records click HERE .
His daughter ANN AXTON was previously married to JOHN SMITH as per Stafford Co VA court records involving the land dispute, ANN AXTON SMITH continued after JOHN AXTONs death. Her husband JOHN SMITH assisted her. She could have only married ISHAM WHITECOTTON after 1687-88, when it appears that the land dispute was settled in her favor, and JOHN SMITH had died. Later land records indicate MEALY WHITECOTTON as her son & heir of the 600 acres.
ISHAM WHITECOTTON & ANN AXTON appear to have had only one child that I have found so far:
Mealy Whitecotton Sr b abt 1687-88 Stafford Co VA m Sarah Foote
Great x 9 grandfather ISHAM WHITECOTTON'S father was, supposedly, WILLIAM WHITE-COTTON b abt 1630? Jamestown James City VA and his mother was unknown, possibly MEALY or ISHAM? It is unknown whether WILLIAM had any other children.. I can't seem to find or trace this individual in early VA records which makes me suspicious that he is more legend than fact.
Great x 10 grandfather WILLIAM WHITE-COTTON's father was supposedly JOHN COTTON b abt 1600 possibly Devon, England, died possibly Jamestown James City Co VA and his mother was ANN WHITE b abt 1600 possibly Devon, England, died possibly Jamestown James City VA. Supposedly this couple married abt 1625 in Jamestown, but they are not lised in the muster for the VA colony in 1624-25--AND THEY SHOULD BE. Jamestown was a very small place in 1625. One researcher has noted that John Cotton came to Virginia on the ship "George" in 1625, but I have not found him on the passenger lists for that ship. The was a "John Gatter" on the George, but Gatter is a viable surname, and not necessarily a misspelling of "Cotton". There was an Ann White who came on the ship "George" in 1635, much later than researchers have surmised. Again, I am unable to trace these individuals in early VA records, which makes me suspicious that their existence is more legend than fact.
