MARTINE FAMILY o

RANDOLPH BENJAMIN "ROLLA" MARTINE was born Dec 24, 1888, Kansas City MO. His wife was RUBY BOLTON BROWN b July 17, 1893 in Alameda CA. Ruby and Rolla were married April 19, 1915 in Seattle WA.

ROLLA graduated in about 1904 from Seattle High School (later known as Broadway HS-- the very first high school in Seattle WA), and for a few years worked as a laborer in various lumber mills around WA state.

Then, beginning in about 1910, Rolla began a 40 year career at the General Appraisal Co. of San Francisco & Seattle. He traveled all over the western states, Alaska and western Canada appraising canneries, lumber mills and other businesses. It was on a business trip to Sand Point Alaska in 1914 via the steamship DORA that ROLLA first met his wife RUBY. They continued their courtship by letter, meeting when they could in Seattle and San Francisco, until their marriage on April 19 1915 in Seattle WA. They had two children, Alice and Ted, both born in Seattle. The family moved to San Franciso CA shortly after the birth of their daughter, and lived in that city until the 1950s, when they moved back to Seattle. RUBY died in 1966 in Seattle; ROLLA died 1974 in Everett, Snohomish Co WA.

Grandfather RANDOLPH BENJAMIN "ROLLA" MARTINE'S father was CHARLES ALBERT MARTINE b April 12, 1854 Yorkville; Racine Co. Wisconsin; died Feb 4, 1926. Rolla's mother was ALICE "ALLIE" MILLER born May 3, 1856 Springhill Missouri; died July 27, 1921. . They were married abt 1880 at the home of Mary Ellis (Miller) Wilson, Alice's older sister, in Lathrop, Clinton Co Missouri. Here are their children's names:

Frederick Earl Martine b. April 29, 1881 Chillicothe, MO m. Mabel Ronald

Walter Lloyd Martine b. March 9, 1884 Alburqurque NM m. Ella Adams

Lizzie May Martine b.Sept. 30, 1886 Wyandott, KA m. Nick Nichols

Randolph Benjamin "Rolla" Martine b Dec. 26, 1888 Kansas City MO died 1974 Everett WA m. Ruby Bolton Brown.

Nina Miller Martine Feb 7, 1893 North Yamhill, OR (near Portland) never married, died 1989 OR

The family moved around a great deal as you can see--the children were born in four different states from Missouri to Oregon!

Just after their marriage in 1880 CHARLES and ALICE were living in Chillicothe MO. Charles was listed as a grocer in the 1880 census, and I suspect he was working with his father JOHN F MARTINE and brother-in-law James Asa Myers. Then by 1884 Charles and Alice Martine had moved to Alburqurque NM! By 1886 they were in Wyandott KA. By 1887 they were living in Kansas City MO, and that is where my grandfather Rolla was born. in 1888. According to a business directory for Kansas City MO 1887-1891, Charles A. Martine was working as a bookeeper for the National Bank of Commerce. They lived first at 612 Elisabeth St in 1887, and then at 924 Ohio St. It appears that they moved to Oregon around 1893, as that is where youngest daughter Nina was born. By 1897 the Martines were living in Seattle, WA, this according to John F.'s Civil War Pension records. Family members indicate that they lived in the White Center area of S. Seattle. Around 1908 they moved to Stanwood WA in Snohomish Co, not far from where I live now. They were present in the 1910 Stanwood Snohomish Co WA census, but only youngest daughter Nina Martine age 14 was living at home. She attended Stanwood High School. The family was not present in the 1920 census, having departed sometime between 1915 and 1920.

Charles A. Martine is listed in the Polk Business Directory for Stanwood, Snohomish Co WA for the years 1908 through 1915. He was working has a bookeeper for the Bank of Stanwood. After 1915 the Martines moved back to the Seattle area, again to the White Center area. At they end of their lives they had a home at 10602 19th SW, according to their death certificates.

Alice Miller Martine passed away July 27, 1921 in Seattle King co WA. Charles Albert Martine died Feb 4, 1926 Seattle, King Co Wa. Both are buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetary in Seattle WA.

More on Children of CHARLES ALBERT MARTINE & ALICE MILLER:

Fred Martine was a printer and lived most of his life in Seattle. He married Mabel Ronald and had two children Mary (Martine) Baldwin who is in her 80's and lives in Walla Walla WA, and Jim Martine (deceased) who also owned a printing business in Seattle. I am in contact with Mary and with Jim's descendents. Fred Martine is buried in Washelli Evergreen Cemetary, Seattle, in a family plot. Fred's wife Mabel was the daughter of a prominent judge, James Ronald, who was one of the first mayors of Seattle.

Lizzie May Martine married Nick Nichols and settled in Oregon. I know she had at least one son Robert Nichols (my mother's cousin). We visited he and his wife Helen when I was a child. He is still living in Oregon. We are trying to obtain his email address.

Walter Lloyd Martine married Ella Adams and had two children, William Bill Martine and Dorothy Martine Appier. Like Rolla, Lloyd also worked for the General Appraisal Company in San Francisco. He apparently lived in California all of his adult life, and died in Orange Co CA Feb 10, 1949.

Nina Miller Martine was a concert pianist of some renown during the early part of the 20th century. The only adult photo I've seen of her (c. 1920) shows an intense-looking woman with bobbed hair and piercing eyes. I believe she graduated from Stanwood WA High School about 1913. She studied piano in NYC, and taught and performed extensively on the E. Coast. She was affiliated with a music school in Wallingford, Connecticut. She never married. At the end of her life she lived and taught piano in Olympia WA until the ripe old age of 91, moved to Oregon to be near her nephew Robert Nichols, and died in Linn Co Oregon April 6, 1989.

Great grandfather CHARLES ALBERT MARTINE'S father was JOHN F. MARTINE b. June 15,1831 Spencerport, Monroe Co, New York, and his mother was MARY ANN SCOFIELD b. 1834 New York.. They were married April 21, 1851 in Yorkville, Racine Co WI, as per their marriage license. John's brother ISAAC MARTINE and first wife AMY CLOSE were witnesses at their marriage. JOHN and MARY ANN had these children::

Charles Albert Martine b. April 12, 1854 Yorkville, Racine Co WI m. Alice Miller. Charles was named for his two grandfathers: Charles Scofield b.1809 NYC and Albert Martine b. 1801 Rockland Co NY

Ida Kate Martine b. June 24, 1857 Yorkville Racine Co WI d. May 25, 1899 Chillicothe MO; married James Asa Myers b 1854 Chillicothe, died 1905. 1880 census shows one son Frank Myers age 2, but 3rd cousin Richard Myers of AZ indicates that they had the following children: Frank Lashley Myers b. June 20, 1877 Chillicothe; Carrie May Myers b. 1880, died 1884; Claude Terrance Myers b 1887 m. Esta May DeVary 1911 and died 1959 in Tucson AZ. Ida Martine and James A. Myers lived in Chillicothe all their lives and both are buried in the Edgewood Cemetary. For more info on this branch of the family contact Richard Myers at doublerr@kna.to

Minnie L. Martine b. August 16,1869 Hardin co Iowa married William Clifton, then in 1907 Joseph Rainford; lived Everson Whatcom Co WA, had six children LaPerria Clifton, Harold Clifton, Mary Clifton, Josephine Rainford, Orville Rainford & Lloyd Rainford.

Bio of Joseph Rainford and Minnie Martine Clifton Rainford Whatcom Co WA

John Edson Martine b. January 10, 1875 probably Kansas City MO never married; lived Everson WA and possibly other places in WA state.

JOHN F. MARTINE enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. On Dec 17, 1861 he joined the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, company G, as Corporal. He became ill, was deemed disabled and was discharged May 1862 in Jefferson City MO. Pension records note that he was 5 feet 8 inches tall with blue eyes and light hair and complexion.

When he returned to Yorkville, WI he could not work the farm, and by 1864 the family was living in Rochester MN and John was working as a salesman. By 1870 the family was living in Hardin Co Iowa, near the town of Eldora (where my father's family, the Hubers and Fraziers lived). John F Martine was incorrectly listed as "Morten" in the census, and his occupation was listed as drayman. Charles Albert his son was 16 and working as a laborer.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880 John F and his family moved to Chillicothe, Livingston Co MO. They were there for the 1880 census, and John was working as a grocer with his son-in-law James A. Myers who married daughter Ida. The two families lived next door to each other.Son Charles and new wife Alice Miller Martine lived in a different part of town, but I suspect that Charles worked in the family grocery business as he is also listed as a grocer.

When John first applied for his pension in 1890, they were living in Independence, Jackson Co MO. Seven years later in 1897 the family was living in Kansas City, Jackson Co MO, and John F. Martine applied for his pension again. Around 1899 he was working as a traveling salesman for Swain, Earle & Co.

According to an application for the Old Soldier's home in Orting WA, John F. Martine and wife Mary Ann Scofield Martine came to WA state in 1899. They apparently lived at Everson WA, probably with their son John Edson Martine or daughter Minnie Martine Rainford. John F Martine first made application to the Old Soldier's home Dec 1905, and was admitted with hemorroids and prostate trouble on Dec 26, 1905. He was released from the home Jan 27, 1906 so only stayed one month.

According to discharge papers from the old Soldier's home, John F & Mary Ann Martine moved to 1309 Bay St Bellingham WA (My husband and I both lived at 1316 Bay street during our college years, which was right across the street from 1309--however, the building had been gone for years and today there is just a parking lot).

John F. Martine re-entered the Old Soldier's home in Orting WA four months later on May 15, 1906 because of complete debility, including paralysis of the right side of the body (stroke?). His reason, in his own words, was sadly "am not well and have no money."

John F. Martine died January 30, 1907 at the Old Soldier's Home at Orting, Pierce Co WA and was buried in the US Soldiers Home Cemetary in Orting, Pierce co WA.Here is a transcription of his 1897 Civil War Pension Application:

"I hereby declare that before my enlistment I was a sound man, no disability as far as I know. The first I knew of any disability was about the first of May 1862, the cause as far as I know was the Doctors of our regiment medicated us before we left the State and when we arrived at came in St. Louis MO drilled us very hard. After I was discharged and returned home I was unable to work my farm. so I moved to Rochester Minnesota in the fall of 1864 and obtained employment as salesman, which I have followed most of the time since, when I have been able to do so. I was discharged for piles and diarrhea, which has been the cause of my loss of health. On returning home I tried to work but trying to do so caused me so much pain I have to seek something else to do. I never have been free from pain in my back and am now suffering from same. My piles do not come down on account of stricture of lowere sphinture muscle which makes if very painful. My piles are affected by the condition of my bowels, either very loose or very constipated. So I am kept in constant pain. I have tried the grocery business, and salesman and manager in lumber yard, but I cannot stoop or stand on my feet long at a time. So my chances to get a living by businesses I used to do I cannot do now. JOHN F. MARTINE"

Mary Ann Scofield Martine, John's widow, applied for his Civil War pension in 1907. She had been living in Bellingham, but after John F's death, she moved near Everson WA with her unmarried son, John Edson Martine, and near her daughter Minnie who had married Joseph Rainford. She died Dec 3, 1914, and is buried in an unmarked grave at Nooksack Cemetary, Nooksack WA.

It is interesting to note that during their lives and because of the Civil War, both John F. Martine and Mary Ann Scofield traversed the entire continent of the United States, both having been born in NY and both dying in the farthest NW corner of the United States!

Great great grandmother MARY ANN SCOFIELD'S father was CHARLES SCOFIELD b. Jan 2, 1809 Stamford, Fairfield Co CT, and her mother was SALLY ANN HOYT DIBBLE. b. April 18, 1815 Pound Ridge, Westchester Co NY, daughter of SIMEON DIBBLE and MARY BROWN.

CHARLES SCOFIELD and SALLY ANN HOYT DIBBLE were married Sept 4, 1831 place unknown and had one other child SIMEON DIBBLE SCOFIELD b. Aug 16, 1832 Stamford, Fairfield Co CT. The family came to Yorkville, Racine Co WI in1838, and CHARLES SCOFIELD became a prominent landowner and at one time owned 330 acres In the 1860 Racine Co WI census he was living next door to John F. Martine and Mary Ann (Scofield) Martine in Yorkville. He died Feb 1, 1885 in Union Grove, Racine Co WI, and SALLY died Feb 12, 1865, in Yorkville, Racine Co WI. Apparently CHARLES SCOFIELD married a second time, to Lacinda unknown, b abt 1827 as per the 1870 & 1880 census, and moved to Union Grove. His mother, Ann (Palmer) Scofield, lived with him from 1860 until her death in 1885, and is listed in his household in census.

"CHARLES SCOFIELD , Union Grove, born Stamford, Fairfield Co CT, Jan 2, 1809, came to Wisconsin in 1838, was first in Racine several months. He came around the lakes by the steamer Jefferson, with his father; thirteen others of his family came at that time. His father (Reynolds Finch Scofield) settled on three quarter-sections of land in Yorkville. After a time Charles Scofield became owner of 330 acres, and remained looking after this interest, until Nov 1870 when he came to Union Grove, where he has a fine residence and a competency. Married Sept 4, 1831 to Sally H. Dibble, had two children Simeon b 1832 and Mary Ann b 1834. Mr Scofield has been road commisioner and constable many terms, and a member of the ME (Methodist Episcopal) Church." History of Yorkville, Racine Co WI. Transcription of this book can be found on the Racine Co WI Genweb site.

"Methodist Episcopal Church Rev S. Lug from England 1861; Rev JJ Howard; Trustees (lists several): Charles Scofield." History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Yorkville Racine Co WI, transcribed on Racine Co WI Genweb site.

The Scofield family goes back several generations to DANIEL SCOFIELD, a Puritan who came to Stamford, Fairfield Co CT and then farther back to Rochdale, Lancashire England. I also have lineages for SLASON, PENNOYER, SELLECK, FINCH, MEAD, LOUNSBURY and LAW families of colonial Stamford CT back to England, but as they are sideshoots of my family tree, and involve very large files, I have no room to post them on this website. For more information on these families, see my Rootsweb Online family tree martinescofield2

Great great grandfather JOHN F. MARTINE'S father was ALBERT MARTINE b. Dec 28, 1800 Clarkstown, Rockland Co NY or NYC? and his mother was MARY or MARIA (possibly EDSON) b abt 1800 probably Genesee Co NY, most likely daughter of JOHN EDSON b Feb 1, 1771 Petersham MA, and SARAH unknown. JOHN EDSON moved from Massachusetts with his father, Rev War patriot NATHAN EDSON & wfe MARY HALL to Stockbridge Madison Co NY by 1791. JOHN EDSON moved to Oneida NY by 1800, and Batavia, Genesee Co NY by about 1810. He lived there with his three sons and their families, John, Barnabas and Charles. ( NOTE: MONROE COUNTY NY WAS ORIGINALLY PART OF GENESEE COUNTY NY.)

ALBERT MARTINE and MARY or MARIA (possibly EDSON) must have married in the 1820s. ALBERT may have died before 1840, as he does not appear in 1840 census records with the family in Monroe Co NY or Rockland Co NY. ALBERT and his wife had at least three, possibly four children:

Rachel Martine b. abt 1820 NY Listed in the 1840 and 1850 Monroe Co NY Census Ogden Twp., no record afterwards

Isaac Martine b. abt 1824 NY m. Amy Close 1850?; Elizabeth Ann Werring April 21, 1866. Died April 10, 1897 Sleepy Eye, Brown Co Minnesota

Maria B Martine b abt 1829 Spencerport, Monroe Co NY m George Tarbox, died April 22. 1858 Spencerport, Monroe Co NY. They had one child, Maria J Tarbox. Maria B Martine is listed in 1850 Spencerport, Ogden twp Monroe Co NY census in household of William Brown and Clarissa (possibly Edson) Brown.. I believe that Clarrisa was most likely Maria's aunt, the sister of MARY/MARIA EDSON. Both Maria and Clarissa seem to be common female names in the Genesse NY branch of the EDSON family. Maria B Martine also joined the Presbyterian Church in Spencerport as an adult May 8, 1853. She and her grandmother, Charity "Geertje" (Campbell) Martine, are both buried in the Tarbox family plot, Fairfield Cemetery, Ogden twp, Monroe Co NY.

John F. Martine b. June 15, 1831 Spencerport, Ogden Twp, Monroe Co NY m. Mary Ann Scofield April 21, 1851 Yorkville Racine Co WI.

ISAAC MARTINE, John F's brother, accompanied him to Racine Co WI around 1850. He and his first wife Amy Close were witnesses at John and Mary Ann's wedding on April 21, 1851. Amy & Isaac Martine had one son, Seymour Martine, as per 1850 census, but both mother and child died before 1860 in Racine Co WI.

The two Martine brothers seemed very close; they lived nearby each other, both joined the army during the Civil War in WI 1861, both were disabled and discharged by 1862. Isaac served in the 2nd WI Volunteer Infantry, company F, rank of Sergeant, and was at the Battle of Bull Run. He suffered a gunshot wound to his arm while on guard duty, and received a medal for his valor.

ISAAC MARTINE and his second wife Elizabeth Werring were married in 1866 in Racine Co WI and shortly after went to Minnesota and settled in the town of Sleepy Eye, Brown Co MN. These children were listed in the 1880 census for, Brown Co MN:

Walter Newton Martine b. abt 1873 Sleepy Eye, Brown co MN died 1939 Sleey Eye, Brown Co MN m. Martha Vanstad. Walter was crippled in early adulthood and spent years in a wheelchair. This however did not stop him from attending the Alaska Yukon Exposition in Seattle in June 1909. According to newspaper accounts of the time, Walter was pulled to the event from Minnesota all the way to Seattle by his faithful dog Rock! Walter went on to have a successful political career as registrar of deeds in Sleepy Eye MN. His children were Walter Isaac, Marilyn, Richard and Alice Martine, all born Sleepy Eye, Brown Co MN. Contact Kathy Blood, a descendent, for more information.

George Henry Martine b. abt 1875 MN m. Una Current was living in town of Sleepy Eye, Brown Co MN by the 1900 census and was a farmer. They had these children: Elizabeth, Thelma, Irene, Darwin and Calvin Martine. I do not know at this time if there were other children. The family was present in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. Una Current Martine died in the 1950s and is buried in the Current family cemetary in Home, Brown Co MN.

Isaac S Martine b. April 20, 1876 Sleepy Eye, Brown Co MN m Kathleen Johnson, children Howard, Ruth, Gladys, Alice, Myrtte, Lucille & James. Isaac was a school teacher in Minnesota, and Idaho. Some of the children were born in N Dakota. According to his published bio in "The History of Montana", he went to Conrad, MT in 1909 and eventually was elected Sheriff of Teton Co MT. After 1920 he went to Portland, OR where he was also involved in law enforcement. He was present in the 1930 census there.

.Isaac Martine died April 10, 1897 in the town of Sleepy Eye , Brown Co MN. According to his Civil War pension records, his death was directly caused by his Civil War experiences. According to a 1920 bio of his son Isaac S. Martine, Isaac Sr was wounded at the first battle of Bull Run. He was a dairy farmer of long standing in the town of Sleepy Eye, and signed a petition in 1896 to join a dairy cooperative. A copy of the petition is on display in the Brown Co Museum, in New Ulm, Minnesota. The museum also keeps a file on this family which includes photos and newspaper clippings. If anyone is interested in these photos or clippings, please contact me directly, as I have copies. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE FAMILY OF ISAAC MARTINE Sr, CONTACT KATHY BLOOD SassKJB@aol.com

Great x3 grandfather ALBERT MARTINE'S father was ISAAC MARTINE b. Aug 26 1766 Clarkstown, Rockland Co NY, and his mother was GEERTJE "CHARITY" CAMPBELL b. Jan 17 1776 in Clarkstown, Rockland Co NY, died April 17, 1851 Spencerport, Monroe Co NY, buried in the Tarbox plot, Fairfield cemetery, Ogden twp, Monroe Co NY near her granddaughter Maria B Martine Tarbox.

ISAAC MARTINE & GEERTJE CHARITY CAMPBELL were married 1794 as per marriage record in the Dutch Reformed Church of Tappan, Rockland Co NY, were both were noted as "of New Hempstead" (near Haverstraw, Orange Co NY) ; Isaac witnessed the will of his father-in-law William Campbell on Jan 4, 1799 in Clarkstown, Rockland Co NY. ISAAC apparently died in 1813. I have only been able to find two of their children:

Rachel Martine b. abt 1799 Clarkstown, Rockland Co NY (no records)

Albert Martine b. Dec 28 1800 Clarkstown Rockland Co NY

CHARITY MARTINE is listed in the 1840 Monroe Co NY census, Ogden township as head of household. In the household are one male age 8-10 (probably John F.Martine ), one female age 10-19 (probably Maria B Martine), one woman age 40-50 (probably Mary Edson Martine) and one female age 70-80 (Charity herself). Charity and Mary ??Martine do not appear in the 1850 census (although her cemetery records indicate she died in 1851), and her grandson John F. Martine is listed in the household of Rachel Martine age 34 b NY, probably his older sister.

Great Grandfather x4 ISAAC MARTINE'S father was JEREMIAH MARTINE b 1734 Philipsburg, Westchester Co NY and his mother was RACHEL BAREE b. 1730s-1740s? NY. Before 1775, Jeremiah moved his family to the town of Haverstraw, Orange Co NY. There on May 1775 he signed the association pledge (along with many of his neighbors) against unfair taxation without representation. According to some sources he fought in the Revolutionary War (unverified). He must have died before 1790 census as only his two sons John and Daniel appear in the census. Jeremiah & Rachel had the following children:

John Martine b. 1762 m. Maria Stevenson

Susannah Martine b. 1763 m. Johannes Vanderbilt

Daniel Martine b. 1764 m.??

Isaac Martine b. 1766 m. Gerrtje Charity Campbell

Rachel Martine b. 1767 m.??

Eva Martine b. 1769 m. ??

Jeremiah Jr. Martine b. 1774 m. ??

Abraham Martine b. 1776 m. Sarah Vanderbilt

Great x5 grandfather JEREMIAH MARTINE'S father was JOHN MARTINE b abt 1690 New Oxford MA and his mother was EVA AFFIE AEFJE MABIE, daughter of CASPAR PIETERZEN MABIE and ELIZABETH SHUERMAN. of Harlem, Manhattan, New York (New Amsterdam). A complete discussion of this line came be found on Steve Mabie's webpage link below.

Steve Mabie's webpage on the family of CASPAR MABIE

JOHN MARTINE & EVA/ AEFJE MABIE were married in 1717 and apparently lived in Westchester Co NY and then Haverstraw, Orange Co NY. JOHN & EVA/AFFIE/AEFIE had the following children:

Elizabeth Martine b. 1717 m. Matthys Buckhout

John Martine b. 1718 m. Rachel Vail

Daniel Martine b. 1725 m. Deborah Ryker abt 1749

Eva Affie Aefje Martine b. 1725 m. Johannes Snedeker

Hannah Martine b ? m ?

Jeremiah Martine b. 1734 m. Rachel Baree

FROM BOOK: "BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF SETTLERS OF NEW ROCHELLE NY 1687-1776" BY MORGAN H SECORD, publ 1941 page 38-39

"JEAN MARTIN was a native of Saint Nazaire in Saintonge, and appears to have first fled to England, and then came to America by way of Boston, settling in Oxford, Massachusetts in 1687. He was a laborer and his wife was Annie. Upon the abandonment of the Oxford settlement, he was among those who came to New Rochelle in the year 1696. His name appears in the census of New Rochelle, 1698, as aged fifty-two years and his wife forty-two, and three children. Two of these were born at the Oxford settlement. He signed the oath of allegiance at New Rochelle, pursuant to the order of January 1698. He purchased land in New Rochelle in the West Division from Marie Guespin (widow of Josias La Vilain), on March 11, 1697. He made his will Oct 5, 1700, which was recorded in the Town Record book on Dec 27, 1701, he there called himself "Ploughman". His wife survived him. This name has been corrupted to Martine."

WILL OF JEAN MARTIN/MARTINE FROM BOOK " RECORDS OF THE TOWN OF NEW ROCHELLE NY 1699-1828" TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH

" Our aid be in God, who has made the sky, and the earth, Amen, at New Rochelle, Manor of Pelham, in the province of New York, in America, the fifth day of October, One Thousand seven hundred, I, Jean Martin, Ploughman, living in the said town of New Rochelle, being for the present by the Grace of Geod, sound of mind and judgement, though afflicted of sickness, knowing of nothing more certain than death, though the hour of it is most uncertian, have had written this present act of deed , which is my testament and declaration of my last will, in the following form.

In the first place-- I commend my Soul to God, Creator & Saviour of the world,; imploring Him to receive me in His favour through the merits of the precious blood of Our Lord and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Secondly, I ask of my wife, Anne Martin, if she survives me, to bury my body in suitable simplicity.

Thirdly, I declare as absolute truth that my said wife and myself, arriving in this place of New Rochelle, desitute, and having nothing but our hands to earn our bread, we have worked by the sweat of our brow to establish and erect the hourse in which we now live, and plough and enclose the lands which belong to it and acquire the little stock of cattle and other movable goods which belong to us. That is why I think it just and reasonable and it is my testament and declaration of my last will that when it will have pleased the Lord to take me unto Him, my said wife, Anne Martin , shall enter in full and entire posession and shall be absolute and undisturbed mistress of all that which belongs to me--the house, tilled and untilled lands, goods and cattle of all kinds which are in this said place of New Rochelle, as well as in the place of New Oxford, where we previously lived, in New England. Giving full power to my said wife, by these presents, as guardian and trustee of my children, who, at my death, will still be young, and praying my said children to obey and assist her as it is their duty. In testimony of faith I have had the above written in presence of witnesses undersigned the day and year above mentioned.."

Signed and sealed with my seal (P) Mark of Jean Martin

MILLER FAMILY of VIRGINIA AND MISSOURI

Great grandmother ALICE "ALLIE" MILLER'S father was WILLIAM FREDERICK MILLER b bet 1816-1820 in prob Cumberland Co VA. ALICE'S mother was ELIZABETH TRABUE MOSELEY b 1818 Buckingham Co VA. ELIZABETH T. MOSELEY and WILLIAM MILLER married around 1840 in possibly Buckingham Co VA and settled around 1844 in Springhill, Livingston Co Missouri. They had the following children:

Mary Ellis Miller b. 1841 Buckingham Co VA, died after 1887 prob Lathrop, Clinton Co MO; married John S. Wilson, lawyer, and by 1864 Capt in Confederate Army (see civil war letters link below). They had at least 5 children; were living in Clinton Co MO, town of Lathrop by 1880 census. Children: Walter S,Wilson, Elizabeth Lizzie J Wilson m Homer Shepherd; Lou Williams Wilson (f), Mollie W Wilson; William Willie Wilson (died young?) Lena Wilson and Ray Wilson. Mary Ellis Miller was most likely named for the sister of John Ellis, who was governor of NC in the 1860s. Her uncle Henry Watkins Miller, lived next door to John Ellis in 1860s census, but I am not certain if the two families were related, or if my gg grandparents simply admired the Ellis family.

Lucy Ann " Lou": Miller born Buckingham Co VA 1843 married Dr. Orsino (sometimes listed incorrectly as Olin) Ayres Williams; died Aug. 13, 1864 of typhoid while her husband worked as a doctor for the Confederate army in Springfield MO . Lucy Ann is mistakenly listed as 'Laura A" in the 1850 Livingston Co MO census. She was named after her grandmother Lucy Ann Woodson Miller. Lucy Ann "Lou" had one son, William Frederick Williams, named after his grandfather, William Frederick Miller.

William "Willie" J Miller born Springhill MO 1846 died 1862 age 16 (see civil war letters link below)

Charles H Miller b. 1847 Springhill MO died possibly 1855? buried in Springhill Cemetary

Letitia "Tisha" Miller born Springhill MO 1850 married James Redman Leeper May 27, 1866; living in Jackson Twp, Livingston Co MO according to 1880 census and was living in Texas by 1900 census. Was in Tarrant Co TX Fort Worth with her son Harry in 1910 & 1920. Must have died bet 1920 & 1930 census. Children: Maud b 1867, Frederick b 1871, Henry Watkins b 1875, Harry b 1882, Paul B b 1890.

Alice "Allie" Miller born Springhill MO 1856 married Charles Albert Martine 1880 at her sister Mary's house in Lathrop, Clinton Co MO; died July 27, 1921 Seattle WA; list of children above.

Henry Frederick Miller born Springhill MO 1859 was living in Chillicothe MO by 1880 census age 21; died Feb 8, 1914 and is buried in Edgewood Cemetary Chillicothe MO in a plot next to his mother Elizabeth. According to 1910 census, his wife was Margaret "Maggie" J Brandt, and he had one daughter Inez Aileen Miller b 1894. Margaret his wife is buried next to him at the Edgewood Cemetary in Chillicothe MO.

WILLIAM FREDERICK MILLER was educated as a lawyer (VA? NC?), was one of the first settlers of Springhill MO, and in fact was the first school teacher there. He served as either a Captain or Sgt Major in the CSA (Confederate States Army) during the Civil War in Gen. Sterling Price's CSA Army of the West, 1st Missouri Militia. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas March 1862. He was imprisoned at Gratiot Prison in St. Louis, sent home, then arrested again for treason and imprisoned a second time at Gratiot Prison. His son-in-law John S. Wilson, who was also a lawyer, obtained his release in exchange for Union army prisoners Nov 22, 1862 (see letters below). He was shipped to Fort Monroe, VA and released in Richmond,VA , where he worked as a clerk for the Confederate Treasury with an annual salary of $1500 per annum (unverified by me as yet).

William's fate during the fall of Richmond is uncertain, but he eventually returned to his family in Springhill, Livingston Co MO. The family was living in Springhill until at least 1866, when daughter Letitia Miller married James R. Leeper. Shortly thereafter William & remaining family moved to Chillicothe, Livingston Co MO, where William tutored, then became headmaster at a private school. He never practiced law after the Civil War (disbarred?). I have not yet been able to verify where he received his education, although his brother HENRY WATKINS MILLER was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, and became a well respected lawyer, orator & state representative (see below).

The Miller family is present in the 1870 census for Chillcothe, Livingston Co MO, but William is listed as HENRY F. MILLER! ! I do not know if this was the census taker's error, or if this was an assumed name to avoid his Confederate past--or? The entry looks like this:

Miller, Henry F age 57 born VA occupation: Schoolteacher

Miller, Elizabeth age 52 born VA

Miller, Allie age 14 born MO (my great grandmother Alice Miller)

Miller, Henry age 11 born MO

According to a letter from my great aunt Nina Martine, William F. Miller was headmaster and taught at a private school in his latter years, which included classes on Greek and Latin, as well as the usual academic subjects. My great grandmother Alice Miller was educated by him, and at age 16 was prepared to teach school.

William F. Miller obviously lived in Chillicothe, MO for the last few years of his life. He died sometime between 1874 and 1880. By the 1880 census, his wife Elizabeth Moseley Miller was widowed and living in Chillicothe with her youngest son Henry F Miller age 21 who was working as a blacksmith. Alice Miller married Charles A. Martine in 1880 also.

Elizabeth T (Moseley) Miller died Jan 29, 1900 in Chillicothe MO and is buried in Edgewood cemetary next to her son Henry Miller. William F. Miller is not buried with his wife in Edgewood Cemetary in Chillicothe MO, nor is he buried in Springhill, so the whereabouts of his burial remain a mystery.

Obit for Elizabeth T. (Moseley) Miller, Jan 29, 1900 Chillicothe MO

Through Lou Miller William's descendent, Roy Vincil Williams Jr, I have obtained 25 transcribed Civil war era letters from Springhill and Versailles MO. I have posted some of the letters, but the entire file would be much too large to post on my website. ANY WILLIAMS, MILLER, MOSELEY OR WILSON DESCENDANTS PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY .

There are several informative and interesting books on Springhill & Chillicothe that can be accessed through the Livingston Co MO library at their webpage.

Great great grandfather WILLIAM FREDERICK MILLER was the son of WILLIAM MILLER Sr b abt 1788 Goochland Co VA, and LUCY ANN WOODSON b abt 1788 Cumberland Co VA, the daughter of CAPT CHARLES WOODSON b Dec 30, 1759 Cumberland Co VA, Rev War, and JUDITH LEAKE. of "Rosebank" plantation. WILLIAM and LUCY ANN were married May 14, 1812 in Cumberland Co VA, probably at Rosebank Plantation. They are listed in the 1840 Buckingham Co VA census, and in the 1850 and 1860 Hanover Co VA census, an elderly couple living with an Elizabeth Morton and an Elizabeth Harris. (Mortons & Woodsons were intermarried). WILLIAM must have died before 1861. LUCY ANN was said to have died June 30, 1861 in Cumberland Co VA (and I'm wondering what happened to their Hanover Co VA land?). WILLIAM & LUCY ANN had the following children, as per the book "Historical Genealogy of the Woodson family" by Henry Morton Woodson; and "A Catalogue of Descendents of Thomas Watkins of Chickohomany VA" by Frances Watkins, and other sources:

Henry Watkins Miller b abt 1814 Rosebank Plantation, Cumberland Co VA? other sources say Buckingham Co VA? Henry was a well-respected lawyer, orator & NC state legislator; graduated from University of North Carolina with a B.A in 1834, M A. in 1837; member of the Dialectic Club at UNC from 1830 onward, as per early U of NC records. Henry is mentioned in the biography of Hon. William Woods Holden (1818-1892), who became governor of NC; apparently Henry taught WW Holden law, or at very least provided him with materials so he could study on his own, allowing WW Holden to receive his license Jan 1, 1841. In 1850 Henry delivered the eulogy at President Zachary Taylor's funeral in Raleigh (the Millers were actually related to President Zachary Taylor through the Lee family ). The eulogy was given before one of the largest audiences ever gathered in that town, according to newspaper Raleigh Register of July 24, 1850. In 1857 Henry was guest speaker at Commencement exercises at UNC. He was elected to the NC State Legislature in 1861, and shortly thereafter fell down a flight of stairs in his home, landed on his head, and died while in public office. Henry married Francis Fanny Devereaux, June 14, 1837 in Raleigh, Wake Co NC, according to NC marriage bond. Henry & family are listed in 1850 & 1860 census; wife alone with children in 1870 census. Apparently wife ran a boarding house on Newbern st in Raleigh in 1867 & 1868, possibly longer. Children:Henry M b 1840, Catherine b 1842 and George b 1846.

Thomas C Miller b abt 1816 Cumberland Co VA? Buckingham Co VA?; book indicated he moved to TN; (?) Can't trace in census records after 1840. May have married Frances Scott, daughter of Charles Alexander Scott & Elizabeth Lewis Hudson. Records of Maysville, Buckingham Co VA church shows Thomas C Miller & Frances Miller as members 1832-1835, when they moved to Powhatan Co VA. 1840 Powhatan Co VA census shows Thomas C Miller, mid age couple with several children. Can't find after 1840. Still researching.

William Frederick Miller b bet 1816-1820 Cumberland Co VA? Buckingham Co VA? ; book indicated he went to MO. Occupation lawyer; Still have not found out where he received his education. William married Elizabeth Trabue Moseley abt 1840 probably in VA. See above for list of children. 1850-1870 Springhill, Livingston Co MO census; widowed wife Elizabeth present 1880 Chillicothe, Livingston Co MO census. She died in 1900 in that location.

Heath Jones Miller b abt 1822; Cumberland co VA ? Buckingham Co VA? occupation farmer; married Sarah E Harris on Feb 10, 1846 in Henrico Co VA (where she must have had relatives). Woodson book indicated he moved to Richmond VA, but that in fact is his uncle Heath Jones Miller who married Minerva Christian! This Heath Jones Miller is present in 1850 Hanover Co Census near his parents, 1860 Dinwiddie VA census, missing1870, and widowed wife Sarah alone with children in 1880 Richmond VA census. There is some indication that this Heath Jones Miller may have fought & died in the Civil War (Sarah E Miller is listed in the Confederate Widow's Pension Index for Hanover Co VA). Children: Charles M b 1848, Mary W b 1854 , Frank D b 1857, William M b 1859, John W b 1861 , Lucy Ann b 1862

Charles Fenton Miller b abt 1825 Cumberland Co VA? Buckingham Co VA? ; occupation lawyer; m Elizabeth Wilburn In 1850 & 1860 Starkville, Oktibbeha Co MS census. Children: Elizabeth b abt 1848 TN and William H, b abt 1857 MS. Listed in "Historical Sketches of Oktibbeha Co MS" as a lawyer and state representative 1860-61. Have not found out where he received his education. Charles was renowned for his powerful oratory abilities. Son William H Miller was a long time resident of Starkville MS and for a number of years was county superintendent of schools. Have found Charles & family in 1850 & 1860 census records in Starkville, Okitibba Co MS. Charles Fenton Miller died in 1863.

Great x3 grandfather WILLIAM MILLER Sr was the son of THOMAS MILLER b March 20, 1754 Goochland Co VA, and CONSTANCE MASSIE b abt 1750s, dau of NATHANIEL MASSIE.and ELIZABETH BETSEY WATKINS. Both the MASSIE and WATKINS families were some of the earliest English immigrant families that came to Virginia in the 1600s. Numerous published genealogies can be found on these two venerable families. THOMAS MILLER & family resided at LaValle plantation, as per his 1819 will.

THOMAS MILLER & CONSTANCE MASSIE had the following children, all probably born Goochland VA:

William Miller Sr b abt 1788 Goochland VA m Lucy Ann Woodson; listed in 1840 Buckingham Co VA census, 1850 & 1860 Hanover Co VA census.

Elizabeth Betsey Watkins Miller b 1790s m Dr Joseph Watkins; in census 1850 Charlotte VA; no children? Joseph Watkins had several by previous wife Ruth Hunt.

Dr Nathaniel Massie Miller b 1790s m Mary Christian, sister of Minerva Christian who married Nat's brother Heath Jones Miller, & Letitia Christian who married President John Tyler; three known children Robert, William H, & Lizzie.

Thomas Miller b 1790s m Mary A Robards

Henry Massie Miller b abt 1800 m Isabella Hinton; children: William Robards Miller, Willis Lewis Miller, more?

Heath Jones Miller b abt 1806 m Minerva Christian; in 1850 Richmond VA census in household of Wm Christian naval officer, brother of Minerva. She was also sister to Mary listed above, & Letitia Christian who married President John Tyler

John Frederick Miller b abt 1807 m Susan Brockenbrough Holman, Louisa Catherine Guerrant, several children by each wife; moved to Buckingham Co by late 1840s, in census there. until 1870.

WILL OF THOMAS MILLER OF GOOCHLAND 1819

In the name of God Amen.  I THOMAS MILLER Sen. of the county of Goochland, being of sound mind, but of a weak state of body, do make this my last will & testament in manner & form as followeth--

First, It is my wish & desire that my executrix & executors herein after to be named shall have full power to make sale & dispose of all my real & personal estate for the payment of all my just debts, accept (sic) my plantations called Woodville & LaValle, which are not to be sold if my other estate shall be sufficient to pay off & discharge them

Secondly, I give to my son WILLIAM one dollar, he having received a large proportion of my estate in advance

Thirdly, The whole of my estate after the payment of my debts I wish kept together until my youngest son becomes of age, then to be equally divided amongst my children:  BETSEY W MILLER, NATHANIEL M MILLER, THOMAS MILLER, HENRY MILLER, HEATH J MILLER and JOHN F MILLER.

Lastly I appoint my beloved wife CONSTANCE MILLER executrix; William Miller (clerk), James B Ferguson, & my sons Henry M Miller and Heath Jones Miller executors of this my last will & testament.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my seal this 23rd day of April 1819. Thomas Miller His seal

Witnesses:  Josiah Leake, Andrew Keane, A. M Vaughan, Jn F Miller

Will was filed at Goochland County Courthouse Monday 17th of May 1819; inventory showed that besides the two plantations that Thomas Miller mentioned, "LaVallee" where he resided, and "Woodville," he also owned a plantation called "Byrd" in Goochland, as well as lands or plantations in Prince William County VA and Spotsylvania Co VA. The 1810 census indicates that Thomas owned at least 44 slaves at his residence, and probably many more at this other plantations. The inventory lists the names of many slaves. Interested parties please contact me directly.

MANY THANKS TO MAX MILLER FOR SO GENEROUSLY SHARING A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL WILL WITH ME.!

Great x 4 grandfather THOMAS MILLER was the son of WILLIAM MILLER b abt 1710 Lancaster Co VA, d 1777 Goochland Co VA, and MARY HEATH, dau of THOMAS Jr HEATH and WINIFRED JONES. The HEATH and JONES families are also early "Tidewater" families in Virginia. William Miller was apparently sheriff of Goochland co VA in 1741. There is some indication that he fought in the Revolutionary War, but would have been in his 60s, so not sure this is correct. A notation in William & Mary Quarterly by a descendent indicates that his will was proved 1777 in Goochland Co VA, according to Goochland Deed book 12, p. 21. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate a copy of this deed book or the will More research to come.

WILLIAM MILLER and MARY HEATH had the following children:

Great x5 grandfather WILLIAM MILLER b 1710 was the son of JOHN MILLER b abt 1685 Lancaster Co VA died abt 1717, and MARGARET (possibly) CARTER b abt 1680s-90s died 1732 as per will. JOHN died several years before MARGARET. The property inventory in the 1720 will of JOHN MILLER listed property in three VA counties: household in Goochland, slaves in Albemarle and a watch, hat & stallion in Lancaster Co VA. They had the following children, all born Lancaster Co VA:

John Jr Miller b abt 1705 died 1726; not mentioned in will of his mother Margaret Miller because he died before her , but mentioned in will of grandfather Randolph Miller see below

Signed Margaret M Miller; Signed, sealed & Published in presence of Robert Edmonds (Seal) Thomas (X) Battony, Edwin Conway

MARGARET was very possibly the daughter of EDWARD CARTER & ELIZABETH THORNTON; she named her daughter Catherine, and her youngest son Henry Miller, possibly after her sister Catherine Carter and brother Henry Carter, children of Edward & Elizabeth Thornton Carter. The name "Henry" was not used in the Miller family in any branch previous to Margaret. UNVERIFIED--STILL RESERCHING!

Great x6 grandfather JOHN MILLER was the son of RANDOLPH MILLER b abt 1650 Lancaster Co VA died 1721 as per his will, and KATHERINE ACRE / ACREE/ AKERS.

RANDOLPH MILLER purchased land on June 22, 1696 Lancaster Co VA, 150 acres on the branches of the Coritoman & Moratico Rivers, adjoining land owned by Richard Ordeson, as per book, "Northern Neck Grants # 2" p 242-3.. He also signed several wills in Lancaster Co VA as witness, and was on the 1716 & 1717 tithetable for St Mary's White Chapel Parish Church in Lancaster Co VA. He was frequently referred to as "Mr. Randolph Miller" which denotes that he was a gentleman of some means.

According to the following deed, RANDOLPH MILLER's plantation was "at a point where Northumberland, Lancaster & Richmond counties meet":

"SUSANNA LADNOR of Northumberland 73 acres surplus in 437 acres granted Richard Merriman & Abraham Bush 5 Jan 1677.  Bush assigned to Merriman 9 april 1679. Survey by Mr John Coppedge. Grant for 570 acres in Great Wicomocco Parish in said county adj Giles Robinson, RANDOLPH MILLER, John Alderson, Peter Revere, at point where Northumberland, Lancaster & Richmond Counties meet.... 3 Feb 1718-19"
Source: Virginia Northern Neck Grants Vol 1 1694-1742

I have not completely verified wife KATHERINE as an ACRE / ACREE/ AKERS, but in the 1688 Lancaster Co VA will of WILLIAM ACRE, he lists RANDOLPH MILLER as "brother & Executor". WILLIAM ACRE's children were William, Katherine who was loaned to Mrs Ann Brown, Elizabeth who was loaned to Walter Welch, (both girls probably bound out for service) and Mary Southing (probably her married name). I am guessing that KATHERINE was WILLIAM ACRE's sister.

RANDOLPH MILLER & KATHERINE ACRE had the following children all born Lancaster Co Va, and as per his 1721 Lancaster Co VA will :

John Miller b abt 1685 d 1717 as per his will; m Margaret (possibly) Carter

William Miller b abt 1680s-1690s d 1718 as per his will; m Frances Parfitt, daughter of Thomas Parfitt as per his will; children William who married Martha Taylor, John, & daughter Frances; Executor Randolph Miller; witnesses Richard Ball, William Mitchell & Therriat Taylor

Peter Miller b abt 1690 s d 1717 as per his will; wife was Mary Mitchell, daughter of William Mitchell, both of whom were executors of Peter's will, and signed an oath to prove it. Sons Peter Jr, Stephen & George Miller who are also listed in Randolph Miller's 1721 will, below;

Katherine Miller b abt 1700 m John Mott, as per will of Randolph Miller; and will of John Mott; one son Randolph Mott was mentioned in 1721 will of Randolph Miller; other children John Jr, Joseph, Thomas, Katherine, Mary Ann & William Moseley Mott.

Margaret Miller b abt 1700 m Thomas Chattin/Chatwyn, as per will of Randolph Miller; children as per Thomas' 1735 will were: Joseph, Thomas, Ann who married George Doggett, Margaret, Sarah, Frances & Mary.

ACCORDING TO ONE TRANSCRIPTION OF RANDOLPH MILLER'S 1721 WILL HE SUPPOSEDLY SIGNED IT "RANDOLPH K MILLER"; HOWEVER UPON RECEIVING AN ACTUAL COPY OF THE ORIGINAL WILL, IT APPEARS THAT HE INITIALED HIS SIGNATURE "R.M" , AND THE TRANSCRIBER MISTOOK THE INITIAL "R" FOR A "K". MANY THANKS TO PAM PEARSON FOR THE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL WILL.

The Estate Inventory of RANDOLPH MILLER is several pages long, and lists hundred of bolts of various types of cloth, suggesting that he may have been a cloth merchant.

"ELIZABETH JONES (white? mulatto? free African American?) born say 1788 (must be 1688, she couldn't be born before her children!), was the servant of RANDOLPH MILLER when she confessed to the Lancaster County court that had an illegitimate "mulatoe" child in April 1716. She was ordered to pay 15 pounds currency or be sold for five years. On 10 March 1719/20 she confessed to having another "Mullatto" child in Saint Mary's Whitechapel Parish. She was the servant of JOHN MOTT (son-in-law of RANDOLPH MILLER) when she confessed to having a third "Molotto" child about 1 May 1721 [Orders 1713-21, 140, 311, 346, 354; 1721-9, 2]."

Great x 7 grandfather RANDOLPH MILLER was possibly? the son of PATRICK MILLER b abt 1620 Ireland? Scotland? England? , wife unknown, who was an early settler & landowner in Lancaster Co VA. Some of his land was on the south side of the Rappahannock River, and in 1669 that area became Middlesex Co VA, rather than Lancaster Co VA.

Records found so far:

1666 Lancaster Co VA formation of Christ Church Parish, PATRICK MILLER listed as vestryman

In June 1698 Richard Hutchens of Lancaster co VA witnessed a deed for JOHN MILLER. This JOHN would have been too old to be the son of my ancestor RANDOLPH MILLER, so I am guessing that this JOHN MILLER was possibly a close relation of RANDOLPH MILLER. Several other researchers have noted that PATRICK MILLER had a son JOHN MILLER, who married MICHALL (possibly CHRISTOPHER), and their daughter ANN MILLER married JOHN BARBEE in 1709 Middlesex Co VA. Birth records for the children of this JOHN MILLER & wife MICHALL exist in the Christ Church Parish records of Middlesex Co VA. This was no doubt originally & previously part of the Christ Church Parish of Lancaster Co VA of which PATRICK MILLER was vestryman in 1666.

A JOHN MILLER appears in the 1700 Lancaster co VA tax tithtables; again, John the son of RANDOLPH MILLER would have been too young to have been on this list! So this JOHN MILLER is possbily the father/brother/uncle of RANDOLPH MILLER, who is also on this 1700 tax list. They are the only two Millers listed in St Mary's White Chapel Parish, Lancaster Co VA for that year.

Possible children of PATRICK MILLER and his wife:

Randolph Miller b abt 1650 VA died 1721 Lancaster Co VA; m Katherine Acre/Acree/Akers

Patrick Miller Jr b abt 1650s, died Aug 23, 1727 as per Christ Church parish records, Middlesex Co VA m unknown

John Miller b abt 1650, died unknown, m Michall Christopher (maiden name not verified by me); children as per Christ Church Parish Middlesex Co VA register & records: Ann Miller m John Barbee; Hannah Miller m Wm Rhodes; John Jr Miller m 1st) Jane Hill, 2nd) Sarah Hadley: Elizabeth Miller m Robert Wilkins 2nd) William Hackney; Michall Miller m Richard Jowel; Patrick Miller m Elizabeth Hill.

There is some controversy as to which mother went with which group of children, but according to researcher Mary Carolyn Mitton, who is a descendent of William Francis Moseley and Sarah Wilson, this is the correct grouping.

My ggg grandmother MARY "Polly" SAUNDERS/SANDERS was the daughter of THOMAS SAUNDERS/SANDERS b abt 1727 prob Middlesex Co VA and MARY MITCHELL. This info is as per the will of Thomas Sanders written Jan 26, 1812 in Davidson Co TN.

**NOTES ON ANTOINE TRABUE AND WIFE MAGDALAINE VERREUIL, GRANDPARENTS OF MARY MAGDALAINE GUERRANT.

ANTOINE TRABUE and MAGDALAINE VERREUIL had these children:

Jacob Trabue b. 1705? m. Marie Wooldridge 1732 Opened Trabue Tavern on Old Buckingham Rd.

Anthony (Antoine) Trabue Jr. b. 1708? m. Claire Vermeil

Judith Trabue b. 1717 VA

MAGDALAINE VERREUIL's father was MOISE (MOSES) VERREUIL b. 1651 Rouen France, and her mother was MAGDALENE PRODHOMME, born 1658 The Hague Holland, and who may have had a second marraige in 1703 to JACOB FLOURNOY b. 1663 Geneva Switzerland.

MAGDALAINE VERREUIL later married DR. PIERRE CHASTAIN after ANTOINE TRABUE'S death. There was no issue from this marraige. According to Barbara Swaim, Magdalaine wrote her will on June 2, 1729, and it was proved May 1731 in Henrico Ca VA. In her will she distributed many pieces of jewelry, silk clothing, furniture and other articles to her daughters Magdalene (Magdalene Guerrant's mother) and Judith; and her estate, Negroes, stock, etc., to her sons Jacob, Anthony and John James. Her will displayed substantial wealth for the early eighteenth century.

MEMORANDUM ON ANTOINE TRABUE BY HIS GRANDSON, DANIEL TRABUE (1760-1840) Family history statement:

:"My grandfather Anthony (Antoine) Trabue fled from France in the year of our Lord 1687, at the time of a bloody persecution against the dissenters by the Roman Catholics. The law against the dissenters was very rigid at that time. Whoever was known to be one, or even suspected, if he would not swear to suit the priest, his life and estate were forfeited, and he was put to the most shameful and cruel torture and death. And worse than all, they would not let any move from the kingdom. Guards and troops were stationed all over the kingdom, to stop and catch any that might run away. At every place where they would expect those persons might pass, there were guards fixed, and companies of inquisitors, and patrols going on every road and every other place, hunting for these heretics, as they called them; and where there was one who made his escape, perhaps there were hundreds put to the most shameful torture and death. When the decree was passed, a number of people thought it would not be put in execution so hastily; but the priests, friars, and inquisitors wree very intent for their estates, and they rushed quick."

I understood that my grandfather Anthony (Antoine) Trabue had an estate, but concluded that he would leave it if he could possibly make his escape. He was a very young man and he and another young man took a cart, and loaded it with wine, and went on to sell it to the furthermost guard; and when night came, they left their horses and cart and made their escape to an English ship, which took them on board, and they went over to England, leaving their estates, their native country, relations and everything, for the sake of Jesus Christ who died for them." (communicated to the Richmond Standard, May 10, 1879 by R.A. Brock, Sec. of the VA Hist, Soc.)

"The Trabue family belonged to the French Nobility, who espoused the cause of the Reformation from the movement's beginning." (Historical Collections of Virginia Vol V)

WILLIAM MOSELEY, a merchant, migrated to Holland in the years just before the English Civil War to avoid taxation on his shipping business, and there married the widow of his partner Arthur Blackmore. WILLIAM was considered an "English Merchant Adventurer", and emigrated to the VA colonies with his wife, two sons, and stepdaughter Susanna Blackmore. Settled in Lower Norfolk, and built a house/plantation, which was calledRolleston, and which was in the Dutch colonial style.

WILLIAM MOSELEY's Will dated June 29 1655; proved Aug 15, 1655 shows wife Susan & children as executors; sons William and Arthur to receive lands; wife Susan to receive a gray mare, furniture and two slaves, Mary and her child Besse; grandson "Corker" to receive a yearling calf (likely the son of his stepdaughter Susannah Blackmore, who married Capt William Corker of Surry Co VA), and to his "cosen" William Cockcroft a yearling calf.

Wife
SUSANNAH BURNET (BLACKMORE) MOSELEY must have died in Aug 1655 also, for son William Moseley probated her will & inventory of her estate.
