BROWN FAMILY
Grandmother RUBY BOLTON BROWN'S father was FRANK RICARD BROWN born Feb 5, 1858 Sacramento CA, died June 19, 1939 San Francisco CA of tuberculosis. Her mother was MARIETTA or MARY ETTA KENNEDY, born March 3, 1858 in Portland Maine, died April 19, 1907 in San Francisco, CA,. They were married July 2, 1878 in Aurora, Esmeralda Co NV (which is now a ghost town) and lived in Bodie, Mono Co CA from 1879 until about 1887 (Bodie also is a ghost town, and a CA state historical park). In 1888 FRANK went to Unga Island AK to become manager of the gold mine there. MARY followed shortly after, and they lived there until 1904, when they returned to California, see below. Both are buried at the Cypress Lawn Cemetary, which was moved in 1914 from San Francisco to Colma, CA, just south of the city. Their children's names were:
Emma Brown May 16, 1879 Bodie CA (or possibly NV?) died before 1900 in AK Frank Kennedy Brown 1883 Bodie CA (died at birth) Helen Francis Brown Aug. 20, 1884 Bodie CA (died at 8 months). Gladys Adeline (Brown) Dryden July 18, 1889 Onalaska AK, died June 26 1996 Gilroy CA Ruby Bolton (Brown) Martine July 17, 1893 Alameda CA , died June 1967 Seattle WA Genevieve (Brown) Stetson March 19, 1894 Unga, AK, died Jan 28, 1929 CA of tuberculosis. I am told that there were other children who did not survive, but until I can check death records in Bodie, I have no indication of this.

I am told that there were other children who did not survive, but until I can check death records in Bodie, I have no indication of this.
My grandmother RUBY BOLTON BROWN was born in California but raised on Unga Island in the remote Shumagin Islands of Alaska. Her father Frank R. Brown was the manager of the Apollo Mine from 1887 until 1904 when it closed for the first time. According to his diary, Frank's wife Marietta and eldest daughter Emma first arrived in Unga September 4, 1888. During a summer visit to relatives in 1893 my grandmother Ruby was born in Alameda, CA. I know from my grandmother's writings that the family sailed back and forth on schooners to California at least twice after her birth. Sadly, the eldest daughter Emma died around 1895, at age 16; it has been said that she commited suicide. Marietta and the girls Ruby, Gladys and Genevieve returned to California to stay in 1904, while Frank Brown went to Nome in search of gold. Gladys told me of how they survived the San Francisco earthquake unscathed, while so many died around them. It made quite an impression on her and the other two girls, as they wandered through the devastated streets.
MARY ETTA KENNEDY BROWN died in San Francisco, CA April 19, 1907, of uterine cancer. She was 46 years old.
Great Grandfather FRANK R. BROWN went back up to Nome AK to prospect for gold for a short period beginning in 1904, after the close of the Apollo Mine. He went "down below" to stay, after a year in Nome, which would have been around 1905. He was possibly suffering from tuberculosis even at that time. His friend Dr. Call, who was living at Nome at the time, insisted that he leave and recuperate, as the Nome winters were very hard on Frank. I am uncertain exactly when Frank returned to Unga, but it may have been after his wife's death in 1907. He was living in San Francisco in 1910 when the census was taken, with his three daughters, and his in-laws, William & Addie (Kennedy) Hawthorne and their girls. From 1907-1910 until 1939 he continued to live at Unga, occasionally spending winters down below. He and several others established the Delaroff Development Co, which was to work the tailings of the original Apollo mine (which had been dumped in the bay) beginning in 1915. World War I put an end to their plans as labor became scarce. I do not know what became of that venture. In the summer of 1939 he returned to San Francisco to live with Rolla and Ruby, where he died at their home of tuberculosis. He was 81 years old. My mother, who was 17, was sent away to Lake Tahoe to work as an au pair that summer because of the possibility of exposure to TB.
Ruby Brown was the only daughter to return to Unga and visit her father after 1907. I know she made several summer trips because of letters written by my grandfather, Rolla Martine. They met on the steamship DORA enroute to the Shumagins and were married in 1915. According to Ruby's 1960s article on Apollo & Unga Island, her last visit was in 1913, the year she met her future husband on the DORA. That year she sailed around the Shumagin Islands with her father Frank R Brown, a Mr Parr, and Capt Zim Moore on a small sloop called "Gladys", which was built at Unga. Ruby also traveled with her father Frank R Brown to the Grand Canyon in Arizona shortly before her marriage in 1915, as per numerous family photographs.
Gladys Brown married Joseph Burton Dryden around 1915 and they lived in San Francisco, California. They had two children Russell Dryden and Virgina (Dryden) Dalby. Virginia's family contined to live in California until recently.
Genevieve Brown married an unknown Stetson and had three children: Barbara, Geraldine and Winifred. Both Genevieve and her husband died of tuberculosis in the early 1930s, and the three girls were adopted and raised by an uncle, Walter Scott Simpson, who must have been related to the Stetson family. Simpson was the a telegraph operator at the time of the San Francisco Earthquake, and was the first man to inform the world of the earthquake and its devastation (as per his obituary). Geraldine is still alive and continues to reside in California. Winifred passed away Nov 7, 2002. Barbara passed away some time ago, possibly in the 1980s.
Great Grandfather FRANK RICARD BROWN'S father was HENRY "NEW HAMPSHIRE" BROWN, born Sept 21,1825 Sanbornton, Belknap Co New Hampshire, died March 1897 Sacramento CA. His mother was CORDELIA H. MYERS nee RICKARD/RICARD born 1830 Kenwyn Parish, Redruth, Cornwall, England, according to parish records. She was the daughter of RICHARD RICKARD b abt 1792 Kenwyn Parish, Redruth, Cornwall, England, and CORDELIA HICKS b abt 1795, same location. The father was apparently an innkeeper or "victualer", and the family lived at Redruth, Chacewater and Blackwater. The father, RICHARD, died before 1841 English census, and the mother CORDELIA (HICKS) RICKARD b abt 1795 emigrated to the United States with her children in 1845, as per manifest of the ship "Henry Clay" which departed Liverpool July 28, 1845 and arrived in New York.
Just before 1850, CORDELIA RICKARD b 1830 moved to Platteville, Grant Co Wisconsin with a brother, RICHARD RICKARD Jr. who was a miner. She married Henry William F. MYERS in Platteville, Grant Co WI on Jan 29, 1850. The 1850 census lists him as a merchant age 22 born Germany, and Cordelia as age 21 born England. Shortly after the birth of their daughter EMMA, they came across county to California, possibly by wagon train???? I do not know whether Henry Myers died or if they were divorced after coming to California. HENRY N H BROWN and CORDELIA first appear as husband and wife in the 1860 census for Salmon Falls, El Dorado Co CA. Also listed is EMMA BROWN age 10 born WI; so apparently CORDELIA had at least this one daughter by first husband Henry Myers, which second husband HENRY BROWN adopted as his own.
The brother, RICHARD RICKARD Jr also apparently came out to California
CORDELIA RICKARD (MYERS) (BROWN) died in Sacramento CA, Jan 23, 1875 at age 45. She was buried in the Old Masonic Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, CA. Henry & Cordelia were married June 1, 1857 in Sacramento, CA, according to their marriage license. They had only one other child, a daughter PHEBE CORDELIA BROWN born April 18 1868 in Folsom CA.
EMMA J MYERS BROWN later married WALTER P EMERY as per the 1870 and 1880 Sacramento Co census. EMMA died June 16 1894 Sacramento CA and WALTER died Feb 10, 1895 Sacramento CA as per their obituaries. They apparently did not have any children.
As a young man, great great grandfather HENRY "New Hampshire" BROWN (who often signed his name H.N.H. BROWN) studied medicine with his uncle, Dr. Henry Butler Brown of Hartford VT. Apparently that occupation did not appeal to him, for in 1849, he and his younger brother Stephen Gale Brown sailed around Cape Horn to CA to prospect for gold ( Stephen died at Sutter's Fort in 1849). It is unknown how Henry was occupied between 1849 and 1857, but he did not return to New Hampshire.
By 1860 HENRY and his family were living in Salmon Falls, El Dorado Co CA, apparently raising cattle, although it unclear what line of business he was engaged in. By 1867 the family was living in the town of Folsom, and Henry was secretary of the Natoma Lodge of the Freemasons, see letter transcribed below:
"Hall of Natoma Lodge, No 64 F. & A. M. Folsom, Sacto Co Cal. July 18, 1867
To the Fraterinity of Free Masons in the City of Columbia SC:
Brethren: Your appeal "To the Fraternity of Free Masons Throughout the United States" was received, in subject duly considered, and the Secretary directed to inclose in a letter the sum of Fifty Dollars aid to the Brotherhood of your city in restoring your several Masonic organizations, as comtemplated by your Memorial.
In deliberation, the question was no one of propriety, but simply how much we can afford to contribute.
Abundant proof is at hand of the worthiness of the Craft in the Southern States, attested by numerous letters, private and public, by travelers sojourners and residents of the South, and by the oral testimony of hundreds of men all over our Land, as if recorded in letters of gold; that 'during the time that tries men's souls' you ministered unto the wants of captive Masons as only Brethren could do it, averting terrible suffering and death in innumerable instances, yourselves incurring great difficulty and much personal danger.
Such timely action, such noble disinterested charity, proves you 'good men and true', spreads the cement of Brotherly Love and affection, and fills our hearts to overflowing, with increased reverence for the sacred rites, lights and priveleges of our Order.
Finally Brethren, whilst we invoke god's special blessing to accompany the enclosed small donation, we promise to cherish your living laurels and emulate your illustrious example.
Fraternally yours, H.N.H. Brown, Secty." Source: One Hundred Years of Freemasonry in California by Leon O. Whitsell, Past Grand Master, chairman of the Grand Lodge Committee on Masonic History
According to an obituary, HENRY N H BROWN was first employed by Leland Stanford in his merchantile business. By 1869 he was employed by W.R. Strong in his American Seed Store in Sacramento.. Later, by 1875, he became an agent for Wells Fargo & Co. When wife CORDELIA died in 1875, he moved with my great grandfather FRANK R BROWN age 17 to Elko Co Nevada, to the mining town of Cornucopia. His young daughter Phebe stayed in Sacramento with half sister EMMA MYERS BROWN who had married WALTER EMERY. According to NV state census records, Henry was working there as an "express agent", but the Wells Fargo Historical Society does not have a record of him. He apparently stayed in Cornucopia from 1875 until 1880. From 1880-1885 Henry was the Wells Fargo agent at the mining town of Lundy, very near the towns of Bodie and Lee Vining (The only family members in the 1880 Sacramento Census were Phebe Cordelia Brown, who was living with half-sister Emma J Emery & her husband Walter P. Emery on K street.). It appears HENRY moved back to Sacramento in 1885. By 1887 Henry and daughter Phebe were living with Emma and Walter P Emery at 826 L St Sacramento, according to Frank's diary. HENRY N H BROWN died in Sacramento CA 1897, and was buried in the Old Masonic Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, CA. Walter Pillbrook Emery was listed at that address in the 1890 Great Register of Voters for Sacramento, so I am assuming that HENRY lived with Emma & Walter Emery until his death in 1897. Both are buried in the family plot next to HENRY N H & CORDELIA BROWN in the Old Masonic Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, CA.

CHARLES WALLACE RHODES was born in Victoria BC in 1861 to a pioneer family from England, Henry & Sophia Rhodes. According to his obituary, he first began working in 1878 as a clerk in his father's lumber business, Henry Rhodes & Company. In 1880 he left Victoria and joined the western division of the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) as a paymaster. The territory he covered was between Port Moody and Savonas, and he was in responsible for paying the seven thousand men who were forging that railway. He was also required to see to the forwarding of supplies by pack animals over very rough terrain and trails. When he returned to Victoria, he worked as an accountant and as a realtor, until 1889 when he joined the Brackman-Ker Milling Company. He was to stay with that company for twenty years. In addition to his business career, Rhodes served in the militia under a Major Dupont, was an amateur actor in local productions and had a fine baritone voice. He passed away on September 12, 1912. He was a member of the Victoria Native Sons Society, Post #1, the Arion Club, and the Union and Pacific Club. When he died, the flag on the Union/Pacific building was flown at half mast in honor of his memory.

According to the book, "History of Northfield NH", BENJAMIN B. BROWN was a shoemaker at "The Centre" for many years.
PHEBE GALE'S grandfather, MAJ. STEPHEN GALE was a renowned Revolutionary War soldier who was one of the first men to scale the walls of Fort Ticonderoga. He was promoted to Major for gallantry. Her maternal grandfather ANDREW JEWETT also was a member of Committee of Safety in Sanbornton during the Revolution. This information was gleaned from a DAR Lineage Book entry for Nellie Prescott Brown, daughter of George Gale Brown and Ellen Elizabeth Prescott. The GALE, JEWETT, PIPER, BACON, MERRILL, SWEAT & WIGGIN names in PHEBE GALE's ancestry go back to England in the 1500s. For more information, see my Rootsweb online family tree, RubyBoltonBrown
Great great great grandfather BENJAMIN BUTLER BROWN'S father was ABRAHAM BROWN Jr b. 1753 Epping? Nottingham ? NH and his mother was MARY BUTLER b. 1760 Nottingham Rockingham Co NH. She was the daughter of BENJAMIN BUTLER & DORCAS ABBOTT; the BUTLER family were some of the original settlers of Martha's Vineyard, with a connection to the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony.
For more information see Rootsweb database RubyBoltonBrown Also here is a link to an online copy of "History of Martha's Vineyard" by Dr Charles Banks.
Here is a passage from the book "History of Northfield NH" on ABRAHAM BROWN:
"ABRAHAM BROWN b. May 8, 1753; came to the north fields of Canterbury prior to 1780 from Epping and bought original lot No. 18, now owned by Freeman B. Shedd. His early ancestry cannot be traced owing to the destruction of Epping records, but they were of English descent. He married. MARY BUTLER, b. March 30, 1760. Her father, Rev. BENJAMIN BUTLER, was a graduate of Harvard College and her mother DORCAS ABBOTT, was from Andover, MA. Many of their descendents held places of honor in state and nation. Mr. Brown married in 1776. He served three years in the Revolutionary War as drummer and four as an adjutant. He died at Northfield May 8, 1824. She (Mary) survived him 22 years. They had ten children."
According to DAR records, ABRAHAM BROWN served as ensign in Capt. Daniel Gordon's company in 1780 for the defense of West Point during the Revolutionary War.

Great x 4 grandfather ABRAHAM BROWN Jr's father was ABRAHAM BROWN b Oct 10, 1721 Salisbury, Essex Co MA and his mother was HANNAH OSGOOD b Nov 30, 1724 Salisbury, Essex Co MA. They were married Nov 30, 1743 in Salisbury MA, according to the book, "Early Families of Salisbury & Amesbury MA " by David W. Hoyt, published Providence RI 1897, and also the book "History of Andover MA". According to , "The Brown Families of Essex Co MA", a compilation of the old publication (1897-1909) called The Essex Antiquarian, all this information is correct. Apparently Abraham Brown & Hannah Osgood moved to Epping NH early in their marriage, "in which town his father had devised land to him."

THOMAS KENNEDY is present in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Portland Cumberland Co census. In 1850 1860 and 1870 his mother ELIZABETH C (RINES) KENNEDY and brother DAVID KENNEDY were living with him. In 1850 THOMAS was listed as a laborer, in 1860 he was a Railroad Section Man, and in 1870 he was a junk merchant. He was a merchant upon his arrival in Bodie, Mono Co California around 1878, this according to tax records.
I have been as yet unable to find records for Thomas' mother ELIZABETH C (RINES) KENNEDY and DAVID KENNEDY after 1870.
According to the 1880 census in Bodie, Mono Co Ca, THOMAS KENNEDY b. Nova Scotia, age 57, was a rancher, married to ELIZABETH b. Nova Scotia.(second wife ELIZABETH ANN "LIZZIE" CORBETT as per their marriage record from Portland, ME). According to tax records from Mono Co CA, he was in Bodie as early as 1878, apparently a merchant as he was taxed on merchandise and consigned goods, but not real estate. By 1879 he owned 80 acres on the grassy flats S. of the town of Bodie, and lived there until about 1885, when he disappears from the tax lists. He would have been 62 years old. Where he and his wife went after that is a mystery. They may have continued to live in Bodie with his daughter Sarah Adeline "Addie" Hawthorne until his death (by about 1895 ?) and may be buried there in an unmarked grave. (unfortunately when I visited Mono Co summer 2001, all the birth and death records had been sent out for restoration, so could not check. Will do so when I can). His name does not appear in the list of gravestone transcriptions from the Bodie Cemetary, but many of the gravestones have been destroyed or are otherwise missing.

Great great grandfather THOMAS KENNEDY's father was JOHN KENNEDY, b abt 1800 Ireland? Nova Scotia? and his mother was ELIZABETH C BETSEY RINES b April 29, 1799 Maitland, Hants Co, Nova Scotia, Canada. Unsure at this time exactly when JOHN KENNEDY emigrated to Canada, or if he was born in Nova Scotia. They were married about 1818 prob Maitland, Hants Co, Nova Scotia, and lived for a time at Windsor, Hants Co, Nova Scotia, before migrating to Lubec, Washington Co ME. JOHN KENNEDY is present there 1840 US census, and must have died between 1840 and 1850. ELIZABETH moved with sons THOMAS and DAVID to Portland Cumberland Co ME by 1850 census and lived there until 1870 census; she likely died between 1870 and 1880. Her daughter MARTHA KENNEDY who married Israel Hague was living next door or near to her in Portland ME 1850 & 1860, see below.
The following list of the children of JOHN KENNEDY & ELIZABETH BETSEY RINES is as per census records and the 1887 letter by HENRY J RINES of Portland ME to his son JOB RINES telling about the family. Henry J Rines was younger brother of ELIZABETH C BETSEY (RINES) KENNEDY.

Great X 4 grandfather JOHN RINES Jr 's father was JOHN (RANES) RINES Sr b abt 1730s MA? and his mother was ELIZABETH TOAL (many variant spellings). JOHN (RANES) RINES Sr is credited by historians as being one of the first settlers of Maitland, Hants Co Nova Scotia after the removal of the French Acadians in 1755.
"France was the first foreign nation to colonize the land; they called it Acadia. The Acadians settled here into a quiet farming life on the fertile lands around, planting fruit trees and building dykes. Some of these dykes can still be seen today. The first settler in the surroundings of Maitland after the expulsion of the Acadians was John Ranes (later called Rines) from Mass. His first house was on this side of the foundry site, built over an old French cellar. Later he built another house opposite the 'spring'. "
Source: History of Maitland Nova Scotia, EastHants.com website
The TOAL surname is Irish in origin and a variation on Toole or O'Toole
"In Irish the name is O Tuathail. A minor sept in southern Ulster so called have anglicized it as Toal, a well known surname in Co. Monaghan (and County Louth, as per other sources."
Source: GoIreland.com website, page on O'Toole surname
It is likely that ELIZABETH TOAL's family was living in Nova Scotia at the time of the removal of the French.

"Major Francis Bolton was in command of a Cromwellian troop of horse in Londonderry between 1652 and 1657. While there he was occasionally a witness at the wedding of a member of his company. A trooper under his command at the time was THOMAS BOLTON, whose burial in 1684 is on the Cathedral records, where he is accorded the title 'Mr', a distinction granted only to mayors, burgesses, professional men, and others of their rank.. THOMAS may well have been a kinsman of the Major's and for that reason was set down as 'Mr Thomas Bolton, trooper'. He was, apparently, Episcopalian; and the Boltons of the Bann valley, here assumed to be his descendents, were usually of that faith..." p.75 Boltons of Ireland, chapter on the Boltons of Ulster Province, by Charles Knowles Bolton
