Part Two

"I'm not making this up, you know!" Anna Russell, comedienne, 1911--2006

Let me state, first of all, that if you have many English or Welsh immigrant ancestors from the 1600s in New England, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, such as are found in my own family trees, then it is not at all uncommon to find connections to many of the US Presidents.

Likewise, if you have a huge number of very early ancestors from England, Scotland and Wales, such as are found in my own family trees, then it is somewhat likely that one of them will connect with one or more of the Royal families of Great Britain.

While the pastime of finding famous or royal persons in one's family tree has no real import in our modern world, it is wonderful for stirring up new interest in genealogy. And it's fun & fascinating!

The attraction, for me, as a history buff, is finding real connections to the distant past. It gives me great pleasure to recognize the multitudes that have come before me.

I hope you enjoy this little sidetrip into the nether regions of my family trees! Most of these lineages have been well-researched and proven, but if you see an error, please let me know by emailing lastlaugh48@yahoo.com

See bottom of each section for sources used. This is a work in progress, so please check back frequently.

PS.--- I'll let you decide for yourself which of these persons are saints and which are scoundrels :-)

There is some controversy indicating that Mary was not the daughter of William C Lee, or in fact related at all to him, even though she was the primary recipient of his estate. I tend to believe that she was his daughter, as Henry Watkins Miller, my gg grandfather's brother (see below), read the eulogy at President Zachary Taylor's funeral in Raleigh, NC, and in the 1850 Raleigh NC newspaper account of the funeral there was indication that Henry Watkins Miller & President Zachary Taylor were somehow related. According to my genealogy study, the only family they seem to have in common is the family of Col Richard Lee & his descendants. Comments appreciated.

ROLLA RELATED TO THESE INDIVIDUALS THROUGH SHARED ANCESTORS :

Sir William Berkeley, Governor of VA b 1605 England; m Frances Culpepper in VA. 2nd cousin of Col Thomas LYGON / LIGON III, above. Shared ancestors: Sir Walter DENNIS & Agnes DANVERS of England; also Berkeley family, see above.

Martha Dandridge Custis, wife of 1st US President George Washington b1731 Shared ancestors, Gideon MACON b 1654 France & Martha WOODWARD, immigrants to VA, my lineage through their daughter Ann MACON b 1690 New Kent Co VA who married Charles MASSIE b 1686 of New Kent Co VA. Gideon Macon was Martha Washington's grandfather who immigrated from France and settled in New Kent Co VA

Gen Robert E. Lee, Civil War General shared ancestor: Col Richard LEE b abt 1617 Worcestershire, England & Anne Owen CONSTABLE, immigrant ancestors to VA, and all preceding generations in the Lee family; Francis CONSTABLE b 1592 England, printer & bookseller, & wife Alice, and all preceding generations of the Constable & related families, back to King William I "The Lion" of Scotland, see above.

President Zachary Taylor b 1784 Orange Co VA, d 1850; shared ancestors: Col Richard LEE & Anne Owen CONSTABLE, and all preceding generations of the Lee & Constable families, as above, and below. There may be more connections through other VA families.

Henry Watkins Miller b 1814 Rosebank Plantation, Cumberland Co VA? other sources say Buckingham Co VA? Henry was a well-respected lawyer, orator & NC state legislator. He graduated from University of North Carolina with a B.A in 1834, M A. in 1837; member of the Dialectic Club at U of NC from 1830 onward, as per early U of NC records. Henry is mentioned in the biography of Hon. William Woods Holden (1818-1892), who became governor of NC; apparently Henry taught WW Holden law, or at very least provided him with materials so he could study on his own, allowing WW Holden to receive his license Jan 1, 1841. In 1850 Henry delivered the eulogy at President Zachary Taylor's funeral in Raleigh (the Millers were related to President Zachary Taylor through the Lee family ). The eulogy was given before one of the largest audiences ever gathered in that town, according to newspaper Raleigh Register of July 24, 1850. In 1857 Henry was guest speaker at Commencement exercises at U of NC. He was elected to the NC State Legislature in 1861, and shortly thereafter fell down a flight of stairs in his home, landed on his head, and died while in public office. Henry married Francis "Fanny" Devereaux, June 14, 1837 in Raleigh, Wake Co NC, according to their NC marriage bond. Henry & family are listed in 1850 & 1860 census; wife alone with children in 1870 census. Apparently Fanny ran a boarding house on Newbern St in Raleigh in 1867 & 1868, possibly longer. Children: Henry Watkins Miller Jr b 1840, Catherine Kate Miller b 1842 and George Miller b 1846. Henry Watkins Miller was brother of my gg grandfather, William Frederick MILLER, of Springhill, Livingston Co MO, who was also a lawyer.

Romulus Mitchell Saunders b March 3, 1791 Orange/Caswell Co NC. Shared ancestors: James SAUNDERS Sr b abt 1700 VA died bef May 1776 Orange Co NC who married 2nd) to Cassandra Haden/Haiden; name of first wife unknown.

ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS was a "statesman, was born in Caswell (then Orange) county, N.C., March 3, 1791; son of CAPT WILLIAM SAUNDERS (an officer in the 6th regiment, N.C. troops during the Revolutionary war, 1777-83, and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati) and HANNAH (MITCHELL) SAUNDERS, his wife...... and a descendant of the Saunders family of Lancaster county, Virginia, who settled on the great Wiscomico river in 1660. His father removed to Somerset county, Tenn., in 1791, on the death of his wife, and died there in 1803. ROMULUS was adopted by his uncle, COL JAMES SAUNDERS, a member of the Halifax congresses. He attended the University of North Carolina, 1809--1811; read law with Judge Hugh Lawson White of Tennessee; and was married Dec. 22, 1812, to REBECCA PAINE CARTER of Caswell county, N.C.He practised law at Milton on the Dan River, N.C., 1812-15; and was a member of the state house of commons, 1815-20, being speaker of the house, 1819. His wife died, Oct. 9, 1821, and he was married secondly, May 26, 1823, to ANNA HAYS JOHNSON, daughter of Justice William Johnson (q.v.). He was a Democratic representative in the 17th, 18th and 19th congresses, 1821-27; attorney-general of North Carolina in 1828-31, and a commissioner with George W. Campbell and John K. Kane, to distribute 25,000,000 francs secured by the treaty with France, 1831.He was judge of the Superior court of North Carolina, 1835-40; was defeated for governor of the state by John M. Morehead in 1840; was a representative in the 27th and 28th congresses, 1841-45; U.S. minister to Spain, 1846-49, and he conducted the confidential negotiations made by the government for the purchase of Cuba for $100,000,000, which were frustrated by Reynolds, U.S. secretary of legation, who accepted a bribe for publishing the negotiations and was dismissed by the U.S. government. Mr. Saunders was recalled at his own request in 1849; was again a member of the house of commons, 1850-52; was judge of the superior court, 1852-65, and was a member of the board of commissioners to revise the laws of the state. He was a trustee of the University of North Carolina, 1819-64. He died in Raleigh, N.C., April 21, 1867."Source: "Biographies of Notable Americans:, publ 1904. NOTE*****This bio indicates ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS was the grandson of William Saunders & Agnes Adams, but that is NOT CORRECT, see below

The book "Biographical History of NC from Colonial Times to the Present" edited by Ashe, Weeks & Van Noppen pub 1906 on page 386 has a biography of Hon Romulus Mitchell Saunders which clearly states that ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS WAS THE GRANDSON of JAMES SAUNDERS who died before May 1776 Orange Co NC----NOT WILLIAM SAUNDERS & AGNES ADAMS, as had been erroneously noted in several books, including "Early Settlers of Alabama".

" ...his (Romulus Mitchell Saunder's) grandfather was JAMES SAUNDERS of Orange County, who had four sons, among them COL. JAMES SAUNDERS , a patriot in Revolutionary times, who represented Orange County in the Provinical Congress of 1776.... and Capt William Saunders." (p 386)

The four sons of JAMES SAUNDERS who died bf May 1776 in Orange Co NC were: CAPT WILLIAM SAUNDERS, father of Romulus Mitchell Saunders, COL JAMES SAUNDERS who never married, THOMAS SAUNDERS who married Mary Mitchell, and RICHARD SAUNDERS.

This information can be easily verified through studying the 1825 Caswell Co NC will of COL JAMES SAUNDERS, Rev War patriot, & representative for Orange Co NC in 1776 Provinicial Congress. COL JAMES SAUNDERS never married or had children, but left his entire estate to siblings, nephews & nieces, including ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS and the children of my ancestor THOMAS SAUNDERS/Sanders who married MARY MITCHELL, see below.

ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS was first cousin to my ggg grandmother Mary "Polly" SAUNDERS b abt 1790 prob VA, daughter of THOMAS SAUNDERS/Sanders & MARY MITCHELL who migrated from VA to NC to Sumner/Davidson Co TN, as per Thomas Saunders/Sanders' 1812 Davidson Co TN will.

Mary Polly SAUNDERS married William Francis MOSELEY of Buckingham Co VA, and their daughter Elizabeth Trabue MOSELEY b 1818 Hickory Shade Plantation, Buckingham Co VA was my gg grandmother.

Letitia's sister Minerva Christian married Heath Jones Miller b 1805, and another sister Mary Christian married Dr Nathaniel Massie Miller b 1790s, both sons of my gggg grandfather Thomas Miller, of Goochland Co VA, who married Constance Massie. Another of Letitia's sisters, Janetta Christian b abt 1798, married John Guerrant Miller b 1798, son of Heath Jones Miller b 1761 & Elizabeth Porter. John Guerrant Miller b 1798 was a nephew of Thomas Miller, my gggg grandfather.

Nathaniel Massie Jr went to KY abt 1802 after his father died and willed him land, then went to Ohio and founded the settlement of Chillicothe, Ross Co OH.
