Quaker Ancestors of Alonzo Cox Huber (my grandfather), showing lines of descent

THOMAS (NOT GEORGE THOMAS) FRAZIER b abt 1725 place unknown; died abt 1790 Guilford or Randolph Co NC; m MARY Unknown, possibly daughter of Thomas PUGH & Elizabeth RICHARDSON. MARY may have also married Herman/Harman Husbands in NC (??). New information from the Westfield Quaker Monthly Meeting in Hamilton Co IN indicates that the parents of my ancestor ISAAC FRAZIER b Jan 19, 1763 were THOMAS & MARY FRAZIER (not GEORGE THOMAS FRAZIER). Previously, all information on ISAAC's parents came to me through the writings of Ann M. Frazier Way, also a descendant of ISAAC FRAZIER & REBECCA SAFERIGHT. I still suspect that ISAAC's father THOMAS FRAZIER, may have been the son of JOHN FRAZIER b abt 1680s prob Scotland who died 1744 Carteret Co NC, and MARY FALCONER b 1680s, daughter of JOHN FALCONER and SARAH. The FALCONERS of Bath/Craven/Carteret Co NC were likely Quaker; the book "Scottish Quakers of Early America 1650-1700" by David Dobson lists several with the FALCONER surname who emigrated from Scotland in the late 1600s to the Scottish Quaker settlement of Perth Amboy, NJ. (No Fraziers/Frazers, unfortunately!). Also, a JOHN FALCONER/FALKONER, possibly MARY's father, is listed as an immigrant to Bath Co NC in the early 1700s. More research to come!

At any rate, all of THOMAS FRAZIER's descendants were QUAKER

Isaac Frazier b Jan 19, 1763 Orange Co (?) NC m Rebecca Saferight (Siegfried). Mentioned in Center MM records, Guilford NC. Migrated to Indiana with rest of family; was granted certificate to Sugar Plains MM in Indiana on Jan 11, 1844; died before 1850 census in Indiana.

Henry Frazer b Aug 19, 1793 Randolph Co NC d Aug 3, 1863 Mt Pleasant, Henry Co Iowa; m Mary Polly Otwell; migrated from NC and lived Boone Co IN before settling in Iowa. Was received at Westfield MM Hamilton Co IN from Cherry Grove MM on Jan 10, 1839, and to Sugar Plains MM on Jan 11, 1844.

Eli Branson Frazier b Jan 17, 1826 Guilford, NC d 1871 Bangor, Marshall Co Iowa; m Nancy Van Arsdale; lived NC, Thornton, Boone Co IN and Bangor, Marshall Co Iowa. Was named for Eli Branson, Quaker, born 1776 Guilford NC, d 1818 Chatham Co NC.

Caroline Amelia "Cramelia" Frazier b April 9, 1848 Thornton, Boone Co IN d 1932 Marshalltown, Marshall Co Iowa; m Phillip L Huber; lived Montgomery & Boone co IN and Marshall Co Iowa

Alonzo Cox Huber b Dec 25, 1871 Thornton, Boone Co IN d 1951 Marshalltown, Marshall Co Iowa; m Mintie Mae Bruton. Was named for Alonzo M. Cox b 1857 Boone Co IN (one of his mother's first cousins), son of Elzena Davis Frazier & Jerimiah Cox, all Quakers.

JAMES PUGH (unverified) b 1665 Wales; d. 1725 Chester Co PA; m Joan PRICE, daughter of David PRICE & Joan AUBREY. James Pugh came to America in 1682. He came as an indentured servant to a Mr. BEVAN. (probably John Bevan & Barbara Aubrey, who was related to Joan Price, James' wife, see below) James settled in Radnor, Chester County, PA after serving his time as a servant. He staked claims to a total of 700 acres of land in the Uwlchan Township of Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was an active member of the Friends Meeting (Quaker), sometimes acting as the overseer at meetings. He built up quite a fortune, owning a grist mill, a tannery, as well as a large plantation. James made his will in 1723, leaving 200 acres of land to each of his sons, John and Thomas. Surname in Wales sometimes shown as "ap Hugh" which means " of Hugh". (Pugh/Frazier family) QUAKER

DAVID PRICE (unverified)b 1640-1650 Wales; died after 1714 in Chester Co PA; m Joan AUBREY / AWBREY. Compendium of American Genealogy" Virkus, Vol. 4, p.272: "David Price, a Friend from Brecknoeshire, Wales, to Radnor Meeting, PA, 1690, with wife and 6 children: married in Wales ca. 1665 Joan Awbrey (ca. 1640-1699), daughter of Thomas AWBREY, a descendant of a Welsh family of high antiquity. Their daughter, Joan, married 1692 James PUGH (died 1724) from Wales, settled in the Welsh Tract, member of the Society of Friends; moved from Radnor to Chester Meeting, 1714, settled in Uwchlan, acquired a large landed Property." (Pugh/Frazier family) QUAKER

JOHN BEVAN (unverified) b 1646 Llantrisant, Glamorganshire, Wales, d 1710 Llantrisant, Glamorganshire Wales, after leaving PA and returning to his Welsh estate in 1710 with wife & one daughter who also died there; m Barbara AUBREY. "John Bevan was the eldest son of Evan ap John, of Treverigg, born in the parish of Llantrisant, Glamorganshire, Wales. In some deeds for Pennsylvania he is described as John ap Evans, of Treverigg, in others as John Bevan. Judge John Bevan was a noted preacher of the Society of Friends, who abandoned his position of wealth and honor in Wales, to accompany his esteemed friend, William Penn, to America. He married Barbara Catharine Aubery, who was born in 1637, and died in 1710. Their daughter Elizabeth, married Joseph Richardson in 1696." (Pugh/Frazier family) QUAKER

SAMUEL RICHARDSON (unverified) b 1655 London, England; d 1719 Philadelphia, PA. m Eleanor Unknown, and 2nd) Elizabeth WEBB. "SAMUEL RICHARDSON, father of Joseph, before mentioned, and grandfather of Edward, came to Philadelphia from Jamaica, 1687, with his wife Eleanor and their children, bringing a certificate from the Monthly Meeting at Spanish Town, Island of Jamaica, which he produced at Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, "ye 10th. of ye 3d. Mo. 1687."It is probable that Samuel RICHARDSON had resided but a short time on the island and since he was living in London in 1673, he is believed to have been the Samuel RICHARDSON mentioned in Besse's "Sufferings of the Quakers," as having been arrested at the Peel Meeting, in London, 1670, and fined for attending nonconformist meetings. He was a man of strong personality and more than ordinary executive ability, and became at once prominent in the affairs of Penn's infant colony. He was appointed a Judge of the Courts of Philadelphia, January 12, 1688, and filled that position for sixteen years. He was elected to the Governor's Council, 1688, and being an ardent champion of the people, as opposed to the dictatorial attitude of Dep. Gov. Blackwell, expressed himself rather warmly in criticism of some of the acts of the Governor, by reason of which an effort was made to prevent him from taking his seat in the Council, and a writ was issued for the election of a successor. This resulted, however, in his return by a vote of the people, February 8, 1688-9, and though some opposition was offered to his taking the oath, he and his friends overcame the opposition and he took his seat in the Council. He was again returned to Council, 1695, and was one of the active and influential members of that body. He served as one of the committee of twelve to whom was referred the demand of Col. Fletcher, Governor of New York, that Pennsylvania furnish her quota of men and means to defend the common frontier against the Indians of the northwest, and made the report of that committee to Council. He was a member of Colonial Assembly from Philadelphia for the years 1691-94-97-1703-06-07-09".

HEINRICH SIGFRIED / HENRY SAFERIGHT b 1715-1720 Germany; d 1802 Guilford Co NC; m Anne/Nannie Unknown.

Aug 15, 1730 Henry Sifry (Sigfried) Ship "Royal Union", Clement Nicholson, commander; from Rotterdam via Portsmouth; arrived In PA.
Source: "Names of Foreigners Who Took Oath of Allegiance in Pennsylvania 1727-1775"

Not yet verified that this is Henry Saferite/Saferight who settled in NC, but was the only "Henry" listed among the various Sigfrieds (or variant spellings) coming from Germany in the 1700s. Was likely a German Quaker; all of his children married Quakers in Guilford Co NC. Names of his children and their spouses as per 1898 letter from Ann M Frazier Way, a descendent. He is listed as Henerick Sigfried in the "North Carolina Will Abstracts". In his 1802 will he names his son John and daughters Catherine, Mary, and Neomi. The executors are William and John Hodgson and the witnesses are Isaac Frazer and Rebeckah Frazer, another daughter. In Vol. III of the 1802 Court Estate Records he is listed as Henry Saferight with executors William and John Hodson and witnesses Isaac Frazier and Rebecca Frazier. This links the different name spellings to the same man. Also, in the "Index to Deceased Guilford Co., NC Court Records" August 1781 - February 1811, Henry is listed as Henry Saferight. (Frazier family) QUAKER

HENRY REYNOLDS b May 1, 1655 Sussex, England; d 1724 Chester co PA; m Prudence CLAYTON; was a Quaker, and likely accompanied William Penn to Pennsylvania; Henry was one of the original purchasers of land in the Penn settlement "Nottingham Lots". QUAKER (Reynolds/Otwell family)

He was selected to act as a commisioner (with several others) for William Penn, and went to the settlement at Burlington NJ to clear any Indian titles to land that Penn had acquired. In 1681 William moved his family to Chester Co PA.

Family possibly related to Edward Lankford who emigrated to VA? see Bruton section below QUAKER (Reynolds/Otwell family)

HUGH HARRY b abt 1660 Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, Wales; d 1708 Chester Co PA; buried Radnor MM. Hugh was the son of Harry Thomas OWEN who decided upon the truth of the Quaker religion as a young man and is listed in Besse's "Suffering of the Quakers", along with Evan Harry, (possibly a son or brother). They were "imprisoned, very hardly used, lodging on bare boards and having their water sometimes kept from them." From 1662 to 1681, his name frequently occurs in the Quarter session records of Montgomeryshire County as fined for non-attendance of the established church (Anglican?) and it notes that he was a Quaker. He was presented to the Grand Jury, as a Quaker, in the April Sessions, 1681.. His birth and death dates are not known but estimated. He was likely to be alive in 1686 when he is mentioned in PA Quaker records as Harry ap Thomas Owen of Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, Wales, who needed monetary help from his sons in America.

Hugh HARRY came to America on the ship "Vine" of Liverpool, England, mastered by William Preeson, arriving at Philadelphia PA in 1684; married Elizabeth BRINTON in 1686. They settled on 250 acres of land in Chester Co PA, which was given to them by Elizabeth's father William BRINTON. Hugh was a weaver by trade. The surname is sometimes spelled Harris/Hari/Harri or Harre. in records. According to NEHGS genealogist GARY BOYD ROBERTS and many other sources, HUGH HARRY & preceding generations in Wales may be descended from the Royal Plantagenet family, but more research needs to be done to verfify this. QUAKER (Reynolds/Otwell family)

EVAN HARRY b abt 1687 Chester Co PA; d Chester Co PA; m Elizabeth UNDERWOOD

ANN HARRY b abt 1715 Chester Co PA; d abt 1766 Chester Co PA m John HUTTON

ELIZABETH BRINTON b 1660s prob Staffordshire, England; d aft 1708 Chester Co PA; m Hugh HARRY see above

THOMAS UNDERWOOD b abt 1630s England; died abt 1683 Anne Arundel Co, Maryland. Supposedly arrived in America at Lower Norfolk VA abt 1650 with wife Elizabeth MEERES, daughter of John MEERES & Mary FRENCH. There is some controversy as to whether or not he was a Quaker; he traveled to Maryland in about 1657 with a group that included the Quaker Thomas MEERES, who was brother of Thomas Underwood's wife Elizabeth MEERES. Thomas UNDERWOOD did not refuse the oath of allegiance, as Thomas Meeres did (the Quaker faith did not permit members to take oaths), but he did leave part of his estate to the Friend's church. One of Thomas UNDERWOOD'S grandsons did become a
QUAKER minister. (Reynolds/Otwell family)

SAMUEL UNDERWOOD b abt 1656 Anne Arundel Co MD; d abt 1722 New Castle, DE; m Mary Ann WILCOX.

ELIZABETH UNDERWOOD b abt 1692 New Castle, DE; d abt 1766 Chester Co PA; m 1st) Evan HARRY; 2nd) William WEBSTER.

JOSEPH HUTTON b abt 1693 Rainstown, County Carlow, Ireland, d 1735 New Garden, Chester Co PA; son of Thomas HUTTON and Sarah STARKEY (Thomas married 2nd in 1705 to widow RACHEL MARCHANT LEYBOURNE). JOSEPH HUTTON m Mary MILLER, whose parents also emigrated from Ireland to PA, see below; both families were orginally from England, but fled to Ireland to avoid persecution for their Quaker faith, but found that people in Ireland were just as willing to persecute them. JOSEPH's will was proved Nov 15, 1735 in New Garden, Chester Co PA. His father THOMAS HUTTON was born abt 1640 in Lupton, Westmoreland, England, and his 1736 will, proved in Co. Carlow, Ireland, mentions the eight sons of JOSEPH HUTTON, who died the previous year in PA. Albert Cook Myers in his book, "Immigration of Irish Quakers to Pennsylvania 1652-1750" has published four letters by THOMAS HUTTON to his sons in Pennsylvania, along with a representation of THOMAS' signature. QUAKER (Reynolds/Otwell family)

JOHN MILLER III b abt 1665 Moate, County West Meath, Ireland, d 1714 New Garden, Chester Co PA; son of John MILLER II b abt 1630 Breckenbrough, Yorkshire, England & Ann CLIBBORN; m Mary AGNEW b 1660s in Armagh, County Antrim, Ireland. Both were from English Quaker families who fled to Ireland to avoid persecution. JOHN & his family emigrated to Pennsylvania about 1709. "JOHN MILLER owned 1013 acres which extended from the middle line to London Grove Township on the west and from Toughkenamon Hill to New Garden Meeting House. He lived on White Clay Creek, on or near the site of Avondale, and built a grist mill--the first in that region--which did the grinding for the inhabitants many miles around, even, it is said, as far as Lancaster. New Garden Monthly Meeting was held at his house as early as 1712. He also owned a smaller tract of land....the greater part which extended into New Castle (Delaware) County. He was appointed a representative to the Provinical Assembly in 1714, but died that same year." Source: "Immigration of Irish Quakers to Pennsylvania 1652-1750" by Albert Cook Myers, p 135

WILLIAM BROWN Sr b March 29, 1658 Puddington, Northhamptonshire, England, d Aug 23, 1746 W. Nottingham, Chester Co PA; m four times, my lineage through his wife CATHERINE/KATHERINE WILLIAMS, see next entry. Other wives were DOROTHY PRESNELL/ PRESLAND, ANN MERCER, and MARY MATTHEWS. Apparently he had children with each wife (unverified by me). WILLIAM BROWN was the son of RICHARD BROWN/BROWNE & MARY who became Quakers and attended Wellingborough Monthly Meeting in Northamptonshire, England. They never emigrated to Pennsylvania. WILLIAM emigrated either with or shortly after his brother JAMES BROWN who married HONOR CLAYTON, daughter of WILLIAM CLAYTON & PRUDENCE LANKFORD, see above. JAMES and WILLIAM were both apparently a Quaker ministers. WILLIAM BROWN accompanied William Penn to PA and was one of the first settlers at "Nottingham Lots".

This was the "Lyon of Liverpool," a ship on only 90 tons. Four families of the seventeen comprising the Jones-Thomas company of Welsh purchasers were on this voyage; the whole number of people, including children and servants, came to forty. They are said to have arrived on 13 August 1682, having been 'abroad eleaven weeks before we made the land, (it was not for want of art, but contrary winds) and one we were in coming to Upland,' as Edward Jones wrote back to his co-purchaser, John ap Thomas. HENRY COMLY Sr b abt 1640s Bedminster, Somerset Co England; died March 14, 1684 Bucks Co PA; m Joan TYLER. Son Henry COMLY Jr who married Agnes HEATON also emigrated at the same time.

"HENRY COMLY with his wife, Joan and son Henry came to Pennsylvania with William Penn in 1682. They came from Bedminster, near Bristol, England and were members of the Society of Friends. Henry Comly was a weaver by trade and settled in Warminster, Bucks County on a tract of 500 acres. In the records of Middletown Meeting, then called "Neshaminah," we find that "Henry Comly was buried ye 14th day of ye 3d mo., 1684." "On the 2d day of the 12th mo. of the same year, 1684, at a Monthly Meeting of Friends of Tacony and Poetquessink held at John Hart's house, Joseph English requested a certificate to take Joan Comly of the County of Bucks and John Hart was ordered to write and sign it on behalf of the Meeting. Quaker Ancestors of Mintie Mae Bruton (my grandmother)

EDWARD LANKFORD or LANGFORD b abt 1615 England; d abt1640 King and Queen Co VA; unsure if he himself was Quaker, but his son Thomas Lankford/Langford Sr b abt 1640 died 1719 Nansemond Co VA married Elizabeth Jordan, whose parents Thomas Jordan II & Margaret Brasseur were QUAKER. Thomas Lankford Sr was known to attend the Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting in Nansemond Co VA. In 1702 he attended the VA yearly Quaker meeting. Some of Thomas Lankford's children became Quakers, but most later descendants were not. See Virginia Families page for descendancy. (Bruton family)

WILLIAM HUGHES/HEWES b abt 1661 Doniford, Somerset England; d abt 1733 Salem Co NJ; m Sarah BEZER, daughter of Edward BEZER & Ann FRY; probably lived at the Chester co PA settlement established by William Penn.

"WILLIAM HEWES was a Quaker. Early on the Quakers had no regular Meeting and met at various members' houses until January 17, 1684, when WILLIAM HEWES, along with JOHN BEZAR and JOHN HARDING, are recorded as being present at 'the fearst Monthly Meeting held by Friends at Chichester, Penn....'. Even after this date the Quaker population was so sparse that meetings were held in both Chichester and Concord, Pa., and after a while they met only in Concord '...on account of the thinness of our Monthly Meeting....' Meetings resumed in earnest in Chichester about 1687.

(Note: JOHN HARDING may have been the brother of my grandfather's ancestor THOMAS HARDING who married Mary BULLOCK, see above)

WILLIAM HUGHES/HEWES son (my ancestor on my grandmother's side) William Parsons HUGHES b 1691 Chester Co PA, was apparently shunned by the Quaker church for "living with a woman without benefit of marriage." (?) William Parson Hughes did marry a Quaker, Mary WITHERS, daughter of Thomas WITHERS & Elizabeth COLLETT, and they later settled in Hampshire Co VA, which became West Virginia. QUAKER (Stump family)

PHILIP PACKER b March 16, 1663 Kent, England, d 1739 Burlington Co NJ. Sailed to America on the ship "Lion of Liverpool", arriving Philadelphia on Aug 14, 1683. He was an indentured servant to Joseph & Elizabeth FISHER of Dublin, Ireland, for four years. THOMAS WITHERS b May 30, 1663 Rawde, Wiltshire, England; d 1720 Chester Co PA; m Mary Noyce, Elizabeth COLLETT, and Jane Unknown; emigrated from England to Pennsylvania in abt 1682, was a farmer, inkeeper, legislator, sheriff of Chester Co 1683-84; constable of Chichester 1708; listed in many, many records from Chester Co & frequently mentioned in histories from that county. Was said to have switched between Anglican & Quaker faith several times, but but all of his wives were Quaker, and his 1720 Chester Co PA will is signed by three highly prominnt Quakers:
"Thomas Withers of Chichester. March 29, 1720. 2/15/1720. A. 90. To son Robert, all my right to my improvement on tract of land in Nottingham near Octararo Creek and moveables on the same. To son Ralph, my plantation in Chichester containing 232 acres, subject to life int of wife Jane. To daughters Mary Hughs, Jane and Elizabeth Withers £16 each. Mentions that Jeremiah Collet Sr. late of Chichester devised into his 5 children above named, £15 each which had not all been paid, evidently their grandfather. Remainder to wife, also executor. Witnesses: Wm. Brown Sr., Henry Reynolds, Wm. Reynolds."
NOTE: Thomas Withers emigrated from England to Pennsylvania in abt 1682 with many other families who settled on Wm Penn's lands. in Chester Co PA. Thomas Withers was one of my PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER'S (Mintie Mae Bruton's) ancestors, and interestingly enough, Thomas lived in the same area and clearly knew some of my PATERNAL GRANDFATHER's (Alonzo Cox Huber's) ancestors as well!  William Brown Sr, Henry Reynolds & William Reynolds who signed Thomas Withers will are my ancestors also, on paternal grandfather Alonzo Cox Huber's side. of the family SEE SECTION ABOVE! So these early immigrants to Chester Co PA are on BOTH sides of my paternal line. So far I have not found any intermarriages, but this is still a VERY interesting development!
QUAKER (Stump/Hughes family)

JEREMIAH COLLETT Sr b 1659 Devizes, Wiltshire, England; d Nov 10, 1706 Chichester, Chester Co PA; m Jane MAY. Emigrated from England in about 1682, and was one of 24 original land purchasers in Concord twp. Listed on 1693 tax list, was sheriff of Chester Co 1684-85 (just after Thomas Withers), and was a justice on the first court in the county. His name (sometimes spelled Jeremy) appears on numerous deeds, petitions, records & lists in Chester Co, and he is frequently mentioned in histories of Chester Co PA.
