"These settlers finally decided to form the first town, Berlin, in 1778. They gathered at Pine Hill and planned out the town. However, after much festivities, one of the young men was accidentally killed during a horse race. The town's formation was put off - until JACOB KEFFER decided to try to organize a town later."

Unknown.

Source: "Names of Foreigners Who Took Oath of Allegiance in Pennsylvania 1727-1775"
Not yet completely verified that this is Henry Saferite/Saferight who settled in NC, but was the only "Henry" listed among the various Sigfrieds (or variant spellings) coming from Germany in the 1700s. Was likely a German Quaker; all of his children married Quakers in Guilford Co NC. Names of his children and their spouses as per 1898 letter from Ann M Frazier Way, a descendent. He is listed as Henerick Sigfried in the "North Carolina Will Abstracts". In his 1802 will he names his son John and daughters Catherine, Mary, and Neomi. The executors are William and John Hodgson and the witnesses are ISAAC FRAZIER and REBEKAH FRAZIER, another daughter. In Vol. III of the 1802 Court Estate Records he is listed as Henry Saferight with executors William and John Hodson and witnesses Isaac Frazier and Rebecca Frazier. This links the different name spellings to the same man. Also, in the "Index to Deceased Guilford Co., NC Court Records" August 1781 - February 1811, Henry is listed as Henry Saferight. STUMP
Johann
George Stump b
1679 Germany, d abt 1735? Heidelberg
twp, Lancaster Co PA. Married Anna Margaretha Unknown (possibly
Weiland). His son Michael settled in Hampshire / Hardy
Co VA, which part became West Virginia. There is some controversy
as to the correct lineage of the Hampshire /Hardy Co VA (W VA
) Stump family; comments appreciated.
Michael Stump Sr b abt 1714 prob Germany, died 1768 Hampshire Co VA; m Anna Catherina Neff b 1716 Michelfield, Baden, Germany, daughter of Johann Michael Neff, below. Anna Catherine Neff arrived in Philadelphia PA Sept 11, 1728 on ship "James Goodwill" with her parents & siblings, see below. Michael Stump Sr & Anna Catherine Neff were married Sept 10, 1739 in Tulpehocken Twp, Lancaster Co PA.
Some researchers have indicated MICHAEL STUMP Sr's wife was CATHERINE or MARIA CATHERINE WHITECOTTON, born in Germany, but that is utterly & completely incorrect, as the Whitecotton family living in the American Colonies was English in origin, and at that time was quite small, and has been traced & documented. Records show they lived only in Stafford Co VA previous to 1750, and were members of the Anglican Church in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co VA.
Michael Stump Sr never appears in Stafford Co VA records during the time period in question. It seems likely to me he followed the same migratory path of so many German & Swiss immigrants: from Lancaster or Berks Co PA to Washington or Frederick Co MD to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Michael Stump was apparently in Augusta Co VA by 1748 as per records there, and in Frederick Co VA by 1749 as per land & survey deeds there. Hampshire Co VA was formed in about 1749-1753.
"In the spring of 1748 George Washington accompanied a surveying party into the South fork and South branch valleys; They surveyed for Lord Fairfax, and Washington kept a record of this (in his journal). He found settlers in the lower South Fork valley, where he surveyed for MICHAEL STUMP..."
Source: "The Dyer Settlement"Entries from GEORGE WASHINGTON'S diary dated March 29th through April 2 1748 indicate that he and the surveying crew were camping on the land of MICHAEL STUMP Sr, gentleman, while surveying for Lord Fairfax. The land adjacent to MICHAEL STUMP Sr was surveyed for LEONARD NEFF, brother of Micheal Stump's wife ANNA CATHERINA NEFF.
