OUTLOOK EXPRESS
HOME
A good site for OE help is http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideOE/index.htm
To open attachments in OE you need to change the security settings.
1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click on "Tools" and then "Options".
3. Click the Security tab
4. Under Virus Protection, click to remove the check from the box
labeled "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
potentially be a virus".
5. Click OK
Q. How do I set up a mailing group?
A. Open up your address book, go to contacts,
new group, give it a name, go to select entries, highlight the names to
add there (they will still remain as single address entries for single
emails if you want to do that occasionally), select/arrow them into the
right box, when done adding all names, tell it okay. The group
will
show up in your contacts. If you choose a name like "Family" or
"Jokes",
etc., when you type in the first couple of letters OE will
auto-complete
the addresses for members of the group.
If you don't want them to know who is
receiving
the item in addition to themselves, BCC to the group name. If you
want them to know who else is
receiving the item send it via the TO method,
I think it will show up all the addresses, but it might only reflect
the
name you have chosen for the
Group so be careful with what you name
it.
Some might take offense at being referred to as the Turkey or
Nincompoop
Group <grin>.

Q. I use Yahoo, but would like OE as my mailer. Is this possible?
A. Outlook Express allows you to add a new
email account to your existing profile. This means you do not
have
to replace your current settings in order to send and receive
Yahoo!
Mail messages. Here's how:
From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
Select the "Mail" tab.
Click the "Add" button.
From the Add menu, click "Mail."
In the text box labeled Display Name,
type your name and click "Next."
In the Email Address box, type your
Yahoo! Mail address (be sure to include "@yahoo.com") and click
"Next."
Select "POP3" to answer the question
"My incoming mail server is a…."
In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or
HTTP) server box, type "pop.mail.yahoo.com"
In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box,
type "smtp.mail.yahoo.com"
Click "Next."
In the Account Name box, type your
Yahoo!
Mail address (without the "@yahoo.com").
In the Password box, type your Yahoo!
Mail Password.
If you want Outlook Express to remember
your password, check the "Remember password" box.
Do not check the "Log on using secure
password" box.
Click "Next."
Click "Finish."
I also want to mention that you
*must*
authorize yahoo to allow pop3 mail. This must be done at the
yahoo
website. If it is not done, then yahoo will close transmission
when
you
attempt to send from OE even though yahoo will still permit you to
download
mail to OE. Once correctly authorized, yahoo will permit sending
from OE.
To control deletion of messages from
the Yahoo! Mail Server:
From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
Select the "Mail" tab.
Double-click the account labeled
"pop.mail.yahoo.com"
Select the "Advanced" tab.
In the Delivery section at the bottom
of the window, check "Leave a copy of messages on server" if you
want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on the Yahoo! Mail server as
well
as on your local computer. Do not check this box if you want your
messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server once you have
received them in Outlook Express.
Q. How do I send a photo by e-mail?
A. Step 1. Scan the photo in one of your photo programs and
save the scanned image as a .jpg type file. Be careful not to use
too high a resolution or the file will be humongous.
Step 2. Start your email and address it as usual.
Step 3. Go to the paper clip or the File menu and when the
browse window comes up, go to the location where you saved the
file.
Click on it, click ok or open or whatever is required to indicate that
file. The window should close and the file will be attached for
sending.
Step 4. Send the email in the usual manner. It will
take longer as there is a sizable file that is being sent as well as
the
email itself.
Note, if it is over approximately 50K, and the recipient is with
AOL, they will receive it in MIME format which means they will have to
decode it back to the jpg format. They can use the keyword "MIME"
on aol to find all about the decoding necessary and download a utility
to do so.

Answer 2. In Win98, I also am able to right click on the
saved
image and a block will give me the option to send by email. When
I use that option an email is automatically created with the image
attached
and I then add the address and any message. I believe this option
may also be available in Win95.

Q. How do I delete a group of e-mails, do I have to do it
one-at-a-time?
A. No - if you want to delete a group of consecutive e-mails just
click on the first one, hold down Shift and scroll to the last one.
This
will highlight them all and a push of the Delete key will get rid of
them
all.
If you want to get rid of some but leave others, then you need the
Ctrl key option - hold the Ctrl key as you click on the e-mails you
want
to delete. The highlighted ones will be wiped when you push the Delete
key.
Q. How do I save my messages. I have a Folder full of
genealogical
messages that I need to put on CD.
A. The beauty of this method is that when the message name is
clicked
on, it opens in OE in exactly the same way as if it was still in OE
folder
on hard drive.
Here's how;
1.Click on the Folder you want to save.
2.Click on the first message to highlight it.
3.Scroll down to the last message, hold down Shift key, and click
on last message.
4.Right-click beside highlighted messages and choose 'Forward as
Attachment'
N.B. If there are a lot of messages, it is very tough on
system
resources so you might have to save only 500 messages or so at a time.
5.A message page will appear, with all the messages named as
attachments.
Do NOT address or send this message, instead click on File, then Save
As.
6.I saved my trials to Desktop, from where it can be dragged
anywhere,
or copied to CD.
7.The messages in OE which you have just saved to Desktop can now
be Deleted.
The beauty of the method above is that the messages can be
searched by using Edit/Find.
