Q. I have FTM.  I want to send my info to a person who has generations.  How do I do this?
A1. The proper document to send for someone using another brand of genealogy software would be a gedcom.  To create a gedcom from the FTM, go to File, Copy/Export.  When you bring up that window, in the Save as type, use the arrow on the right to scroll down to Gedcom(.ged) and give the file a name.  It will save it to the location that you see in that window.  Make note as this is where you will want to navigate when you send by email.  Start the email and use the attach which will let you navigate to where you saved that .ged file. Click on that and ok and then send. That will send your email and the gedcom.

A2. Even though I don't like my info in gedcoms.  It all depends on how much you want to send.  If the whole thing, go to file, copy/export family file, and in the little window at the bottom click on the arrrrrow and choose Gedcom {.ged},  in the window at the top choose your desktop give it a name and click save.  Presto its on your desk top.
Now write an email and use your attach command and tell it to look at the desk top, highlite your gedcom and click open or save and it should now be attached to your email.  Send it.  Now if you don't want to keep that gedcom there, right click on it and choose delete.

Q. I'm trying to help my cousin put our information on the FTM and we have a problem. We would like to create a report and store it in a file so we can send it as an attachment in an email. Can someone tell us how to do it in a step by step method?

A1. First of all follow these instructions

1.   Open your Family Tree Maker
2    At the top of your screen is the tool bar.  Click on the turquoise
button (10th) and that will make you a report.
3.   Then go to FILE in upper left hand corner and click on it.
4.   Click on "Export Genealogy File"   A screen will come up
5.   The  slot where it says "Save In" type C Drive
6.   Drop down to where it says "File Name"  give the file a name I usually
use the eldest ancestors name.
7.   Click on the word "Save"
8.   Minimize or close FTM
9.   Open your email program
10. Address your email just like you normally do
11. Click on the paper clip and or the word "Attach"
12. A screen will come up and make sure it says C Drive
13. Highlite the file you saved
14. Click on the word Attach.
15. Write your message and then
16. Click on send.

You have now made a Genealogy Report and you have saved it to your C-Drive and you nhave also sent it as an attachment to someone else.  You do not need to keep the Genealogy report in the C-drive as you can make up a new one each time you want to send an updated version.  When I save it
afterwards I delet the file from the C-Drive because as you work in FTM it will change and you will need to update the file when you want to send a new one.

A2. This is for Version 7.0:
The Genealogy Report can be exported. So instead doing a copy and paste simply go to File->export Genealogy Report->choose format .rtf (I think most of the word processors can import rich text format) or text (plain text, no formats). rtf would be my choice.
For all other reports you have to use copy and past. For the custom report (button REPORT) it is the best to past it into Excel or something similar,
because you can sort it however you like.

A3. Open Family Tree Program to the Family Sheet of the person you want to start with.
Left click on Genealogy Report (use cursor, run over the Icons, it will say Gen. Report) looks like a blue sheet of paper.
This will bring up the Genealogy Report of the person.
Left click on the Contents Icon (just above the Gen. Report Icon) select the # of generations you want to export. Also left click on Options, select what information will go into the report.
Left click on Files, left click on Export Gen. Report. Box pops up - asks where to save the file (save to Desktop if you do not plan to use it again,
makes it easy to put in Trash Can, for long term, put it in My Documents), next give the file a name (I usually put Descendants of the person you began with).

A4. Go to the famly page you want the report on.  Go to view, genealogy report.  It creates a report, go to content, #of generations and choose
how many you want to include.  Open your word processor, go back to ftm and click on edit and choose copy report.  Go to word right click and
paste.  Now click save as and it should put it in my document folder.
