Some Classic Messages posted to Gen-Newbie

Unsubscribing - some people just can't get the hang of unsubbing, and many failed attempts make their way onto the list.

As one of our listers wrote  -  "Has anyone made up a collection of the unsubscribes?  Some of them are wonderful....plaintive...strident...pleading!  Mary McCanney Finley"

A sample;

"Please remove as I will not open attachments.....  3rd request"

"PLEASE UNINSTALL ME"

"I have not written ANYONE........
Yet, I'm getting "ten thousand" e-mails FROM strangers!  I QUIT.
I don't know what's going on here.
UNSUBSCRIBE"

I have asked to be deleted......I thought I was in something else......this is too much........hunderd of emails....please get them stopped......

"unscribe"

"Would a member be so kind as to unsubscribe me from this list as I have lost
the page to do so.  Thank you."

"remove from mail list"

"Discontinue Distribution.    Please dicontinue sending me gen-newbie-d digest"

"PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE -- THIRD REQUEST!
Please remove xxxxxxxxx@prodigy.com from your mailing list there are too many replies and my mail box can't hold them.
Thank you very much, "

"delete from list"   "remove"     "delete"    these three all from the same person who had forgotten the word, 'unsubscribe'

"did'nt read yesterday ,today 330  emails which i just can't handle.please unsubscribe me .thank you  .........xxxxxxx@aol.com"

Please remove me from your mailing list.  The endless list of messages from you are the most annoying thing in my experience using email.

unscubscribe -  as a listee responded, "going scuba diving"

The Sheep Saga

This is the mailing that started a frenzied exchange of humerous postings, and saw sheep exported around the world.

 "Hi,
I was in windows temp folder looking for stuff to clean out when I came upon something called "sheep" the icon itself was a small cartoon sheep--I  clicked on it (woe is me!) to see what it was and before I blinked I had a  little cartoon sheep running all over my desk top. Cute for awhile but now  wanted to get rid of him --I clicked on the icon and hit delete but it says  it can not delete it because windows is running this program.  Tried to grab  sheep and drag to the recycle bin --he goes kicking and screaming but jumps back out again. I tried undo which made more sheep appear --I have four  now--have no idea what to do to rid myself of my "flock" --scared to do  anything else --as everything I do seems to make them multiply!!! PLEASE  HURRY--they seem to be sleeping now, but I am sure they will soon wake up  and run all over the desk top again. I AM NOT CRAZY AND I AM NOT KIDDING well, at least I am not kidding. HHHHHHHEEELP!!   "

 dianne
P.S. they just woke up again !!!!

Some follow-up postings are below.

"I think I would appreciate having the little sheep too.  I also have a screen saver with a dog running around and tearing holes in the screen and then digging holes and then drags the trash can out and eventually pee's on it too.  That is the after dark program. "
Judy

" Sheep  ( 310K )
Description: This is an application that will put cute little sheep running around on your desktop. You double click to get the sheep on the desktop, and if at some time you need them to go away & leave you alone, just double click on the sheep. You can double click the application several times and put several sheep on the desktop. (Clue: watch out, sometimes they pee!!)   "
sheila

"My sister sent me one of those and I had about 12 of them running around  peeing and eating etc. Drove me crazy. I wish I could remember what I did to  get rid of them. Hope you find the answer."

"I think we need a border collie to round up all of these sheep."
Dennis

"Dear "Mary" <GRIN>
ROTFLMAO!!!  You really made my morning with this one!!!
Have you tried to Left click on one of the sheep and then click on Close?
We had a similar problem and that was the way we got rid of the critters."
Gus

"Ditto to Gus' comment.  I haven't had this much fun since the "gullible" set!!!!  Still wiping the tears from laughing so hard.  Thanks Dianne, AKA Bo Peep.  Glad to see you lost them, are you going to try to find them??!!!
Or, don't you know WHERE to find them??  Try a search engine, HINT HINT HINT!!! LOL  Try http://www.tucows.com     Oh sorry, wrong species!!!   <ROTFLMAO> "
Sue in NW Ohio

"Tried Mary's suggestion but when I right click on sheep no menu appears --they do not seem to be multiplying at the moment but are learning new tricks one does a nose dive from the right top corner of my screen and as he falls toward the lower left hand corner he bursts into flames and then a bathtub appears in the lower left corner where he finally lands."
 dianne

"I have a vocal, daisy-eating one who's asleep on my toolbar right now!  I canceled out her eight brothers & sisters. (All they did was bang into each other and see stars<g>) "
Maureen

"I have oranges that do tricks too.  Anyone interested?"

"This little sheep I downloaded is more fun then my granddaughters Furby. At least he is quite, and I don't have to lock him in the bath room at night."
Elaine J

"Please respond privately: how do I get the sheep to multiply? (Okay, teach them the times tables, get them a calculator ... )  "
          Connie in Washington

"We used to have an adorable Oska on our computer.  He's a cute little Koala that does all sorts of things.  We had some unrelated computer problems and I had to go back to the factory settings and never put him back on.  He's at http://www.oska.com
Karen"

Subject: Roll Call - My First One

Good Evening, GEN-NEWBIES . . .

I have fought the battles for two years now in trying to help and educate GEN-NEWBIE subscribers on proper research methodologies,
supported only by Elaine and a few friends on GEN-NEWBIE. However, the battles have worn me down and I now raise the white flag. Since yet
another Roll Call has begun on GEN-NEWBIE - only three weeks after the last one - I've decided to become an "Internet Researcher" and
participate in my first "Roll Call."
I have only been actively researching my lines since 1992 - almost 9 years now - but have done fairly well. Using the web tonight I was able
to extend my lines back further than I had ever thought possible. I'm almost finished now. The Internet is grand. As usual, however, there is
some missing data I need to find and any help appreciated for filling in the blanks here . . .

Welcome Newbies.  We were all new once.  As a newbie, I posted some doozies. I lived, learned and moved on.  I still like to post the occasional "doozie" just to keep things interesting!  LOL!  A great tool is reading a list archives before you join.  This will give you some idea of what the list covers, what's tolerated and whether or not you even find the list helpful or appealing to you.  Once you join a list, read the Welcome letter.  Let it be your guide.  I have all my letters in a separate folder.

GEN-NEWBIE is great for general computer and genealogy questions.  I recommend this list to everyone just beginning.  You also need to join surname and location specific lists.  That's where you'll find the most help on your specific family.

General Roll Calls aren't very helpful.  Very doubtful you'd find a cousin or that someone would do a lookup.  This is what I do.  I have ancestors from Shelby, Co., IA.  I joined the Shelby Co. list and the IA list.  I then posted that I was new to the list and new to IA research.  I asked for any advice or suggestions on researching in that area.  I then gave the information that I had on the family - names, dates etc.  People on both lists scurried to their resources and sent me Co. bios, census records, and burial information. One woman drove to the cemetery where they were buried and sent me photos.

People in specific locations have invested in resources that help them research.  They enjoy making use of their personal library.  Someone has a county bio book, sees my posting and thinks, "I can check for the Woods family in there."  Bingo.  I have had the same success in Philadelphia and Henry Co., IA.  People want to help.

People will help you.  Remember them.  Thank them profusely.  And when you have more experience and resources, help someone else.  This will build good
genealogy Karma for you.  Every lookup I've done has been rewarded by someone else, somewhere else.  We all just keep passing it on.

                 Best of luck!           Sandra

BACK IN 1902
The year is 1902, one hundred years ago ... What a difference a century makes. Here are the US statistics for 1902.
1. The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven (47).
2. Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.
3. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
4. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.
5. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
6. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
7. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
8. The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.
9. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
10. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 Per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
11. More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.
12. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."
13. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.
14. Most women only washed their hair once a month and they used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
15. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.
16. The five leading causes of death in the US were:
