B.5.k. Rebecca Nesbit {B.5.k.}

     Rebecca Nesbit was born in Harrison County, Kentucky sometime between 1798 and 1800, and grew up in that county. In the fall of 1815 she married Aaron Lewis, who was born in the winter of 1795 in Kentucky. The identity of his parents is not known at this time. After their marriage they remained in Harrison County until late 1819 or early 1820, when they moved to Posey County, Indiana, which lies in the farthest southwest corner of that state where the Wabash empties into the Ohio River. They grew a fairly large family, and remained in Posey County for the rest of their lives. Rebecca passed away in 1844 at a fairly young age (about 45 years), but Aaron lived to the age of 76. Both are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Smith Township, Posey County, Indiana.

Analysis of the Timeline

     Rebecca Nesbit, the last child of Mary Berry and Samuel Nesbit, was born in Harrison County, Kentucky, several years after the Nesbit family had migrated from their Borden Grant home on the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains. Her husband, Aaron Lewis, who was few years older than her, was also born in Kentucky, although, at the present time, nothing is known about his parents. When she was about 10 years old, Rebecca was enumerated in her parents household for the 1810 federal census. Four years later, her father wrote out his will and identified her as one of his unmarried daughters. Of course, she was unmarried because she was only about 17 years old at the time. She did, however, get married the following year, and several years later, her husband was listed as a testamentary in the marriage of one of Rebecca’s cousins. Their oldest child was born in Harrison County, but by the following year, the family had moved to Posey County, Indiana, where they were enumerated in the 1820 census. By the time of the 1830 federal census, five more children had been born. Two more children were born between 1830 and 1841, but by 1844, Rebecca must have taken ill. At the young age of about 45, she passed away.

     When the Lewis family moved to Posey County, Indiana, accompanying them Rebecca’s older sister, Margaret, who live din their household even after Rebecca passed away. This suggests that Margaret may have required a lot of care, and possibly had some illness or was in some other way incapacitated. Aaron lived to the ripe old age of 76, passing away in the early summer of 1871.
