| Misc. Notes |
| The Rt. Rev. Benjamin Bosworth Smith, M.A., D.D. was the first Bishop of Kentucky, (1832-1884) and Ninth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, serving a tenure of 17 years, (Jan. 9, 1868-May 31, 1884). His first wife died (June 2, 1833) in a cholera epidemic in Lexington, Kentucky. He also served as third Superintendent of Public Education for the State of Kentucky, founded a girls' school in his home, and founded the Kentucky Theological Seminary, which he served as its first Dean. During his term as Bishop of Kentucky, he founded more Episcopal churches than exist in the state of Kentucky today. He made trips to England, and hand-carved models of parish churches there, and from those models several Kentucky churches were designed and built. One of the notable churches is in Harrodsburg, another in Frankfort, where he is buried in a cemetery overlooking the state capitol, (adjacent to the grave of Daniel Boone). His wooden Gothic study is preserved in the Bishop's Garden at St. Francis-in-the-Fields, Louisville, Kentucky. It's wood paneled walls decorated by Bishop Smith's paintings of English cathedrals. |
