This U.S. postage stamp
(Scott No. 1459) was issued on 4 July 1972 as part of set, called Colonial American Craftsmen,
commemorating the American Bicentennial. It shows a colonial hatter, such as Zadock Benedict of
Danbury, Connecticut, forming felt made from beaver fur into a hat. The typical tricorn hat of the
American Revolutionary War period is shown inset. Danbury was an American hatting center from Colonial
times until quite recently.
