This is a small area of northwest Suffolk, England  where lived others of the extended families related to Thomas Benedict. This area directly abutts the area of Norfolk shown in John Speede's Norfolk map, published the same year. The towns of Bungay and Beckles (modern Beccles) lie along River Waveney, the county border. Again, no roadways are indicated, but major waterways are shown. Dotted lines are the boundries of "hundreds", subdivisions of shires or counties, each having its own court. The Roman road, mentioned as running southward from Norwich, by Venta Icenorum (Caister St Edmund), continued across Suffolk passing closely to Ispwich and terminating at Colchester in Essex. Just east of Bungay, within two miles, is the location of Metingham (modern Mettingham), while a similar distance due south of Bungay is the location of St Margaret (modern Ilketshall St Margaret).

The bright green squares identify:

  • Bungay;
  • Metingham (modern Mettingham);
  • St Mergret (modern Ilketshall St Margaret);
  • Sowowlde (modern Southwold);
  • Wrentham.

  Some approximate distances:
Norwich to Bungay -- 12 miles
Saxlingham to Bungay -- 5 miles
Bungay to Metingham -- 1-1/2 miles
Bungay to Southwold -- 11 miles
Bungay to Wrentham -- 8-1/2 miles
