----------Platt Benedict ---------Jonas Boughton Benedict
David DeForest Benedict --Frederick Platt Benedict
Platt Benedict[6 Jonas,5 Daniel,4 Daniel,3 Daniel,2 Thomas,1] was born at Danbury, Connecticut, March 18, 1775, and was of the sixth generation of Benedicts in America. He married, November 12, 1795, Sarah, daughter of Daniel DeForest, of Wilton, Connecticut. She was born August 27, 1777, and died June 24, 1852, at Norwalk, Ohio. Their children were:
Clarissa, born September 4, 1796; married Hallet Gallup, April 9, 1820; died January 11, 1878, at Norwalk, Ohio, leaving two sons and four daughters now living in Norwalk, Ohio, viz.: Catherine, Maria (wife of Marlin A. Dunton), Carroll, Sarah (wife of Henry Brown), Caleb H. and Lizzie F.
David Mead, born August 17, 1801; married September 24, 1833, to Mary Booth Starr; and died June 16, 1843, at Danbury, leaving no issue.
Daniel Bridgum, born June 1, 1803; died September 9, 1827, at New Orleans, Louisiana. Not married.
Jonas Boughton, born March 23, 1806; married October 8, 1829, to Fanny, daughter of Henry Buckingham, and died at Norwalk, Ohio, July 29, 1851, leaving one son, David DeForest, and one daughter, Fanny B., who married Louis H. Severance, of Cleveland, and died August 1, 1874. Married as second wife Caroline Chapman, May 26, 1842; no issue.
And Eliza Ann, born August 27, 1812; married William Brewster, May 1, 1832, and died August 17, 1840, at Norwalk, Ohio, leaving two sons, both of whom died in childhood.
June 17, 1856, he married, as his second wife, Mrs. Lavina P. Benton, of Republic, Ohio, who survived him and died February 9, 1875. No issue.
David DeForest Benedict of the eighth generation of Benedicts in America, was born at Norwalk, Ohio, August 1, 1833; graduated from Kenyon college in 1856 as a Bachelor of Arts, and from the Cleveland Medical College in 1858 as an M.D. October 14, 1856, he and Harriet M. Deaver, of New Haven, Huron county, Ohio, were married. January 14, 1852, he enlisted as a contract surgeon and was appointed by Gen. McCook as medical director of the hospitals at Louisville, Ky. February 5, 1863, he was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 17th Ohio and served under Generals Buell and Rosecrans in most of their campaigns in the west. September 20, 1863, after
the battle of Chickamauga, he refused to leave the wounded and escape, and as a result suffered the horrors of Libby Prison until exchanged in November, 1863. After a few months furlough he rejoined his regiment June 27, 1864; was promoted as a field surgeon May 6, 1865, and was mustered out, after the war closed, July 21, 1865. During his service he was placed in charge of a smallpox hospital at Mumfordsville, Tennessee, and was one of the immortal legion that marched with Sherman to the sea. Just as the twentieth century was dawning, January 5, 1901, he joined the "bivouac of the dead on fames immortal camping ground." The one supreme sorrow of his life was the loss of his only son "Fred," a bright, lovable, manly boy just budding into manhood, who was taken away from him March 11, 1885. Forgetting that he himself was the last of the line, he mourned for his boy as "The last of the Benedicts." The direct lineal descendants of Jonas Benedict of the fifth generation of Benedicts in America are very numerous, but "David" was the last male of the line. At the time of his death he was a member of the Whittlesey Academy Association; senior warden of St. Pauls Episcopal church; treasurer of the Home Savings and Loan Co.; trustee of the Norwalk Cemetery Association; a director of the Firelands Historical Society, and a member of the Loyal Legion.
About 1846, there stood on the corner where the Whittlesey Academy now stands [1902], a small frame building used as a barber shop by Robert Shipley whose irritable temper incurred the dislike of "the boys." One Fourth of July night a large cannon was fired into the building, carrying away a large part of its front. When asked by his father: "David, were you one of the boys who destroyed Shipleys front?" "Yes, sir." "Who were with you?" "I was one, but I will never tell on the others." "All right, my boy, I will pay the bill." That was the boy that a Confederate army could not drive away from his wounded and dying comrades on the field of Chickamauga. True to his friends, faithful in all the relations of life, remembered by all with affection and love. His faithful wife survives him and their descendants are as follows:
Mary Deaver, born July 26, 1857.
Harriott Melvina, born January 6, 1859; married to Henry W. Owen, Jr., October 14, 1881, who died July 8, 1889. On September 28, 1897, was married to William B. Benham.
Agnes Caroline, born February 11, 1861; married Frank D. Wickham, October 14, 1886. Children: Eleanor Shaon [?Sharon], born October 4, 1887; Harriott Benedict, born May 23, 1890; William Preston, born September 13, 1893; Lucy Preston, born July 31, 1897.
Fanny Buckingham, born January 14, 1863; married Andrew J. Hottel, October 14, 1889, who died August 9, 1899. Children: David Benedict, born July 22, 1890; Mary Harriott, born March 14, 1895; Agnes Edna, born October 2, 1897.
Frederick Platt, born April 7, 1866; died March 11, 1885.
Ellen Eliza, born June 21, 1868; married Louis W. Wickham, August 9, 1892. Children: Suzan Cora, born June 25, 1893; Cora Taber, born February 23, 1895; Frederick Benedict, born April 8, 1900.
Suzan Rosa, born November 29, 1873. (End)
Researching Benedicts in Periodicals and Other
Published Works
The Editor
Last issue, we devoted two articles to techniques for genealogical research on the internet, using the Benedict family as an example. In this issue, we have placed emphasis on previously published works, several "hidden" in periodicals or obscure history books.
In recent years, genealogical periodical research has been made much easier with the creation by the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, of the Periodical Source Index (PerSI). Originally a multivolume set of books, updated annually and so expensive that only libraries were likely to own it, PerSI is now available on CD-ROM and priced within the reach of most serious researchers (the 1999 version has just been released by Ancestry.com). This index aided us greatly to ferret out most of the articles we feature in this issue. We hope to bring you more in the future. Copyright restrictions will be respected.
The editor found the connection of Platt Benedict (front page) to Norwalk, Ohio an ironic twist. Her own family had court dealings in that Huron County seat, though Platt is not her ancestor. Might we have suspected that a place called Norwalk would have a connection to the home of the Benedicts (Norwalk, Connecticut)?
Terry Heismann, who wrote our lead article last issue, is with us again, this time with the results of searches in historical books beginning with the biography of Thomas Edsall Benedict and including the miscellaneous notes.
Thomas E. Benedict, Public Printer
From Herringshaw, Thos. W., A Biographical Review of Prominent Men and Women of the Day with Biographical Sketches and Reminiscences... (Chicago: A. B. Gehman & Co., 1889), p. 341. More details of his life, marriages (1) to Frances M. Freer nee Akerly and (2) to Eva Ford nee Dutcher, and children, can be found on pages 148 - 149, Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. 2 (1969) by Elwyn E. Benedict. Text in brackets [ ] is information taken from the genealogy and does not appear in the biography here transcribed.
"Thomas E[dsall]
Benedict
born in 1839
"The subject of this sketch, Thomas E. Benedict[8 Rev. William Lewis,7 William,6 James,5 James,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas,1], is a native of New York. He is a printer and publisher by trade, and for some years ran a political paper in aid of the New York democrats. He was elected and served three years in the legislature of his native state. In 1886 he was appointed to the position of public printer at the national capital.
"The government printing office is the largest printing and binding establishment in the world. It does all of this kind of work that is needed by the government, except the fine work specially entrusted to the treasury bureau of engraving and printing.
"The public printer is under heavy bonds to account for the money received by him, and on the strength of these bonds, money is advanced to him by the secretary of the treasury to keep the office "going" until the work is finished and charged to the proper appropriation.
"Congressmen and executive officers authorized to order printing at government expense, deal directly with the public printer, who is accountable chiefly to the congressional committees on printing. The average number of persons employed in this department is fifteen hundred. They are well paid, but retain their places only by favor of the managers or of congressmen who claim the right of work for proteges."
The Benedict Jones Birthday Book
Reprinted with permission form The Ohio Genealogical Society Report, Volume 15, No. 1 (713 South Main St., Mansfield OH 44907-1644: The Ohio Genealogical Society, Spring 1975) pp. 40 - 43. Rather than merely extracting the Benedict names in this piece, we have reproduced it in its entirety. Because they were important to the compilers of the original book, should they be your ancestors, we assume that you will want to have all of the names.
Names found in the "Longfellow Birthday Book," Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1881, compiled by Nellie (Benedict) Jones, Frank Scott Jones, and Anna Gold (Leonard) Slack Jones, all of Cardington, Morrow Co., Ohio. Submitted by Frances Nees Slack, 7318 Maple St., Mentor OH 44060. Note: "R.V.S." indicated Raisin Valley Seminary; "*," faded or uncertain entry. 1971.

George Grenville Benedict (Vermont)
From Proceedings of the Vermont
Historical Society 1905 - 1906 (Montpelier, Vermont: Vermont
Historical Society, 1906), pp. 161 - 164.
Editors note: The subject had been Vermont Historical Society president. Details of his family and descendants can be found on pages 213 - 214 of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. 1 by Henry Marvin Benedict (1870) and page 226, Vol. 2 by Elwyn E. Benedict (1969). His lineage in brackets [ ] is taken from the genealogy books.
George Grenville Benedict [ Col. George Grenville Benedict, A.M.,8 George Wyllys, LL.d,7 Rev. Joel Tyler,6 Rev. Abner,5 Peter,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas,1], for 54 years connected with the Burlington Free Press and for 40 years its editor-in-chief, died in Camden, S. C., at 12:45 oclock Monday morning, April 8, 1907.
On February 4 Mr. and Mrs. Benedict left Burlington, with the intention of passing the balance of the winter and the early spring in the South, Miami, Fla., being their objective point. In St. Augustine, where they stopped with the intention of remaining a few days, Mr. Benedict suffered on February 11 a serious attack of heart failure, being unconscious for an hour. He rallied from the attack and seemed to gain in strength, although slowly. The trip to Miami was abandoned and Mr. and Mrs. Benedict remained in St. Augustine until April 1, when they started North stopping first in Savannah, Ga., and reaching Camden Thursday, April 4. A letter written by Mr. Benedict the following day was received in Burlington Monday morning, a few hours before the telegram came announcing his death. In the letter Mr. Benedict said that he stood the journey well, but the final summons came very suddenly from another attack of heart failure.
Mr. Benedict was born in Burlington December 10, 1826, a direct descendant of Lieut. Thomas Benedict, who came from Nottinghamshire*, England, to America in 1638. He prepared for college in the Burlington Academy, graduated from the University of Vermont in 1847 and three years later received from the same institution the degree of master of arts. After leaving college he was a teacher in the Washington Institute in New York City for about a year, and for the three years following was occupied in building and superintending the lines of the Vermont & Boston Telegraph Company, of which company he was president from 1860 to 1865.
In August, 1862, Mr. Benedict enlisted as private in Company C, 12th regiment of Vermont volunteers. In January following he was promoted to a lieutenancy and was subsequently detailed as aide-de-camp on the staff of Gen. George J. Stannard, commanding the second Vermont brigade. He received a medal of honor, awarded by Congress for distinguished conduct in the battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. He was mustered out of service July 14, 1863. He later served as assistant inspector-general of the State militia, with the rank of major, and in 1866 was aide-de-camp on the staff of Governor Paul Dillingham, with the rank of colonel. A close student of army matters and a graceful writer, Mr. Benedict was in 1878 appointed State military historian, in which capacity he prepared the history of "Vermont in the Civil War," in two volumes. He also published "Vermont at Gettysburg" and a volume of army letters entitled "Army Life in Virginia."
Mr. Benedicts interest in the University of Vermont was active and unceasing from the years when he was a student there. His father was for 23 years a professor, while three of his brothers, a son and several nephews were students at different times. For 40 years Mr. Benedict has been a trustee and secretary of the institution and for a long time one of the executive committee.
In politics Mr. Benedict was always a staunch republican. He served at different times as secretary and chairman of the State committee of his party and was a delegate to various State and national conventions. He was postmaster of Burlington 1861 - 65. In 1869 he was elected State senator from Chittenden County and was re-elected the following year. For the next four years he was for the second time postmaster of Burlington and from 1889 to 1893 was collector of customs for the district of Vermont. In non-political offices he at different time was President of the Vermont Press Association, president of the Vermont Historical Society, president of the Vermont Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, governor of the Vermont Society of Colonial Wars and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. He was a devoted member and for a long term of years clerk of the College Street Congregational Church, a corporator of the Burlington Savings Bank and a director of the National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier.
Mr. Benedict became associated with his father in the management of the Free Press in 1853 and 13 years later, in 1866, took up the duties of editor-in-chief, a position which he held at the time of his death, being the dean of Vermont journalism.
Mr. Benedict was twice married, his first wife being Mary A. Kellogg of Canaan, N. Y. She died in 1857, leaving a daughter, Mary. In 1864 Mr. Benedict married Katharine A. Pease. She survives him, together with a son, Prof. George Wyllis Benedict of Providence, R. I. Two brothers, Robert D. and B. Lincoln, reside in Brooklyn, N.Y.
[Following this obituary, there are long tributes by President M. H. Buckham of the University of Vermont and by
J. L. Southwick, of the editorial staff of the Burlington Free Press. They are not included here but may be found on pages 164 - 177 of the previously named publication. - ed.]

Charles A. Benedict, Riverboat Pilot
Marilyn A. Finke, who is a volunteer at the National Archives Kansas City Branch, 2312 East Bannister Rd., Kansas City MO 64131-3011, has sent us photocopies of two "Special Pilot" licenses for C. A. Benedict. The first, dated 16 April 1889 authorizes him to perform the duties of "Spec on Nelly May 2nd Pilot upon Steam Vessels for one year from this date." It bears the signature of "Chas. A. Benedict."
The second license, dated 28 April 1892 states it is the fourth issue of license (though Marilyn did not find the remaining two) and authorizes C. A. Benedict (which, this time is the way he signed it) to perform the duties of "Special Pilot on the Mississippi River and Tributaries." The latter was notarized in [?Wabasha] County, Minnesota.
The Charles A.s and Charless are very numerous in the indexes of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in Americas two volumes. We werent able to easily identify this man. If you have a family tradition that identifies your Charles Benedict ancestor as a Mississipi Riverman, let us know and we may be able to send you copies of these licenses.
