The Benedict / Clark Family
By Richard Beleņa Benedict, 1773 Monroe Avenue, Seaford NY 11783-2121

During the summer of 1979, I located a letter in a box of papers which would prove to be instrumental in my research regarding the family of my great-granduncle and great-grandaunt: Edwin Dwight Benedict7 (Edwin,6 John,5 John,4 John,3 James,2 Thomas1) and Sarah Rebecca (Clark) Benedict. The letter was addressed to my grandfather Ralph Curtiss Benedict8 (Abel Carter,7 Edwin,6 John,5 John,4John,3 James,2 Thomas1) and was postmarked Hartford, Connecticut, 4 June 1927; it bore the return address: Mrs. W.A. Wadhams, Bloomfield, CT. Unfortunately, the final page of the letter was missing so there was no further identification of the writer.

However, upon reading the letter it was evident that the author was a Benedict first cousin of my late grandfather. The letter related to a cemetery lot and Mrs. Wadhams wrote, "I have the impression that this lot was purchased about 1861 - as the first burial was your father’s first baby - Little Katie - who perhaps died in ‘62 or ‘63. Then the next four burials were my small brothers & sisters. In ‘72 our grandfather Edwin was buried - the first adult. It would seem probable that he - your father - & my father purchased the lot together."

I reviewed of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. I by Henry Marvin Benedict (1870) and Vol. II by Elwyn E. Benedict (1969); there was no daughter of Edwin Dwight Benedict identified as having married a Wadhams. Therefore, I consulted the Genealogy Collection at the New York Public Library in an attempt to locate Wadhams family information. A review of Wadhams Genealogy by Harriet Weeks (Wadhams) Stevens (1913) revealed an entry for William Allyn Wadhams, married to Hattie Calhoun Benedict, daughter of Edwin Dwight and Sarah Rebecca (Clark) Benedict. I had identified Mrs. W.A. Wadhams, my grandfather’s first cousin: Harriet "Hattie" Calhoun Benedict.

A review of the Bloomfield, Connecticut telephone directory revealed that several Wadhams families still resided in the town. A letter was dispatched and shortly thereafter I received my first communication from H. Lydia Wadhams, a daughter of William Allyn and Harriet (Benedict) Wadhams. Lydia provided me with information regarding her maternal grandparents and their children; I happily completed my Edwin Dwight Benedictf family group sheet.

Lydia then undertook her own genealogy project. Over the next nine months, as I completed my final year of high school, she contacted her relatives and prepared a record of the descendants of her Benedict grandparents. It was completed in May of 1980, and she mailed a copy to me and she asked me to see that it would be published. About a year later I would learn from one of her grandnieces that Lydia had passed away.

Lydia prepared records of the descendants of three of Edwin Dwight and Sarah Rebecca (Clark) Benedict’s children:

Harriet Calhoun, Edith Lydia and Walter Clark(e) Benedict. Her research is presented in a companion article which follows.

The Descendants of Three of the Children of
Edwin Dwight

By H. Lydia Wadhams (posthumous), prepared for this publication by Richard Beleņa Benedict

Editor's note: for the electronic distribution of this article to preserve individual privacy, we have eliminated all of the information on persons who were still living at the time of the original publication.

Following on the next few pages are detailed the descendants of three of the children of Edwin Dwight Benedict and his wife, Sarah Rebecca Clark (family summarized in the previous article):

III. Harriet (Calhoun) Benedict Wadhams

VI. Edith Lydia (Benedict) Baldwin

VII. Walter Clarke Benedict.

[Note from Richard Benedict]: In a letter dated 5 May 1980, Lydia Wadhams wrote: "I have been assisted by many people in gathering information, my sisters and nieces on the Wadhams line and by Eleanor Baldwin Clements for the Baldwin line. I could not have done it without their help."

Lydia also credited her cousin Marion (Benedict) Larson as the source of the Walter Clarke Benedict descendants information. In a letter of 19 Feb. 1980, Lydia noted: "You will find Clark spelled with and without the final e. In any genealogical papers that my mother collected regarding the Clarks the e was omitted but my uncle’s family seems to have retained it. It makes no difference which is used."

Since this material was prepared in 1979-80, an attempt was made by Richard Benedict to locate the death information on those of the older generation that have since passed on. Information in italics is based upon data found in the Social Security Death Index.]

"GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY"

"Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Benedict celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday evening Feb. 1 at their home, 259 North Lafayette street; many of their friends joined in making it a very pleasant affair. Mr. and Mrs. Benedict were married in Beloit, Wis., in 1858 and had only one child, a daughter, Rosanna, who married A.E. Terpening in 1886, dying ten years later, leaving four daughters, who live here. Mr. Benedict was for many years vice president of the Benedict Furniture Clamp company on North Front street. Mr. and Mrs. Benedict are descendants of Revolutionary stock and their ancestors took part in the stirring scenes of both the wars of the Revolution and that of 1812. Mrs. Benedict's great grandfather was Capt. Jonathan Pitcher, who served under Paul Jones, and her grandmother, with whom she lived until fifteen years of age, was Mrs. Betsy Arnold, who was a prominent figure in the Rhode Island charter troubles in 1842-1844."

[Editor’s note: This couple is listed in The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol 1 by Henry Marvin Benedict (1870), page 183. There is little about them except that (at the time of publication) they resided in Fairport (?Wisconsin) and that Jacob Benedict’s wife (not so named in the anniversary announcement) was Elizabeth Palmer, born 1837 of Beloit, Wisconsin and that they were married 1 February 1858. Jacob Benedict8 was born 16 September 1831. His lineage was (Gilbert,7 Enoch,6 Joseph,5 John,4 John,3 John,2 Thomas,1). Jacob and Elizabeth (Palmer) Benedict had one child, Rosana Cornelia, born Sept. 15, 1862. Her family is not numbered or carried forward in Volume 2.]

"Benedict, Allen, [the editor is unable to identify this man from G of BA, Vol. 1 or 2] late of Fairport, and a valued member of society and church, was born in Tioga county, January 30, 1834. His father, Nathan, came to Penfield in 1844, engaging in farming, as did Allen until 1876, when he removed to Fairport. During the late war Mr. Benedict served eighteen months in the 8th N. Y. Cavalry, after which his health was greatly impaired, and his death occurred September 10, 1893. He married Lovinia J. Gowdy of Watertown, N. Y., in 1884, who survives him.
