Benedicts in Early Massachusetts
By the Editor

Readers of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America1 know that the progenitor of the New England Benedict family settled first at Long Island and then went to Norwalk, Connecticut. From there, the family spread out, primarily to the rest of Connecticut, to the south, and to the west.

Connecticut researchers are well aware of the Barbour Collection. It is housed in the Connecticut State Library and microfilm copies are widely available.2 Some town records of Connecticut in the Barbour collection have been transcribed into volumes and more printed volumes are on the way. In the meantime, this newsletter extracted the Benedicts in the towns of Norwalk and Ridgefield and published them in past issues.3

Recently, we conducted research at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) in Boston. We suspected, but weren’t certain, that the number of Benedicts in Early Massachusetts was relatively low. We were right.

The settlers of early Massachusetts from the beginning, kept detailed birth, death, and marriage records. There was often a fine line between the established church (Congregational) of the puritans and the official governmental body, the town (township) which was charged (and still is) with keeping the vital records. Sometimes the records are chronological, i.e. recorded in sequence according the the event. Sometimes they are recorded by family. Occasionally, the events included in the family list actually occurred in some other town (and not always so stated).

Microfilmed copies of many New England town records are available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and its Family History Centers around the world. Many Massachusetts town records were also done in microfiche format by Holbrook Research Institute (now Archive Publishing)4.

NEHGS has certainly the largest collection of printed birth, death, and marriage records for early Massachusetts. Spurred by legislative order, over 200 (out of 364) of Massachusetts town’s vital records before 1850 are in print.5 Various publishers are involved. Some of the books extend the records beyond 1850 and some end earlier.

The printed volumes available at NEHGS have been conveniently indexed, but only by surname. Most, but not all books are organized in alphabetical order, which though helpful, move them out of time and family unit context. Many entries were taken from sources other than the official town record: cemetery, church, and other records. These sources were faithfully noted in most books.

In the pages that follow, we have extracted and transcribed the Massachusetts printed vital records on all Benedicts (including spelling variations) that are available at NEHGS. Bear in mind that this is a second or third generation transcription. If possible, the handwritten town records should be consulted on film or in the original for confirmation.

War of 1812 New York Damage Claims

Transcribed by the editor at the New York State Archives, Cultural Education Center, 11th Floor, Albany NY 12230 from New York Adjutant General’s Office, Index of Awards on claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812, (Clearfield Co./Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore: 1969).

Following is the introduction to the book:

"This volume is an index of claims presented to the State of New York for payment for military clothing and equipment provided by individuals who volunteered, or were drafted by the Governor for service in the Militia of the State of New York during the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812.

"These claims were for clothing and equipment "which were depreciated, worn out, lost and destroyed in said service for which he had not received payment."

"By an interpretation of the original authorizations (Chapter 270, Laws of 1818 and Chapter 117, Laws of 1819 State of New York) only the claims of those who performed duty "in the service of the State" were paid. Subsequent legislation (Laws of 1859 and 1872) provided payment for those who were "detached into the service of the United States" provided there was a reimbursement to the State by the United States. Some additional claims were paid in good faith by the State, but as late as 1885, 17,228 claims were unpaid. Records indicate that these claims were never paid.

"This index, published with an errata list found in one of the original indexes, should prove to be of considerable value to researchers, historians, biographers and the general public. Few copies of the original printing are avilable and these are generally in poor condition.

"The original declarations of claims from which the index was compiled are on file in the Bureau of War Records maintained by the Division of Military and Naval Affais, Public Security Building, Albany, New York, 12206. [Now in State Archives] The declaration indicates the claimant’s name and military grade, inclusive period of service and land warrant, if any, granted as a result of his service.

    From - John H. Allen, 111 South 19 St., Montevideo MN 56265

Enclosed is a copy of a photo [not shown] of Electa Mercy BENEDICT who mar. 2 Feb 1831 Elisha ALLEN [See this newsletter Vol. IV, No. 3, Winter 1997.] For an update on our search for more information about Mercy’s husband Elisha ALLEN, I received a study of 13 sources from the Cortland County NY Historical Society. Elisha ALLEN res. 1820 Cortland Co. [Federal Census] p. 578 Town of Salon, with 1 male 18-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 in agriculture; 1830 Cortland Co., p. 14 Town of Salon: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5, 1 female 20-30. Also on p. 14 was Elias ALLEN with 3 males 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40., 1840 Cortland Co., p. 63, Town of Freetown Elisha ALLEN with 1 male 5-10, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 50-50, and on p. 28, Elias ALLEN Town of Salon with 1 female 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 50-60 - 1 person in agriculture. I have been told that Mercy (BENEDICT) ALLEN had only one child, James Henry ALLEN. Possibly Elisha was a widower with four children when they mar. I would appreciate any further information on the previous spouse (if any) of Elisha ALLEN, any relationship to the above Elias ALLEN and any other information on this BENEDICT/ ALLEN family.

A Major American Civil War Resource:
The Official Record of the War of the Rebellion
    By John E. Benedict, 4919 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington DC 20016 e-mail: benedict.bros@worldnet.att.net

In the Spring 1996 issue, we described how to find great-grandfather’s Civil War service records held at the National Archives. Service records hold valuable information about his experiences. They usually show the date and place of his enlistment; promotions; some of the places where he served; dates and places where he was ill, captured, wounded, paroled, killed; perhaps when he was pensioned or died. Occasionally they hold pay slips or instruments written or signed by the soldier himself. But if you’re looking for more detail, what other sources are there?

Well, there are many detailed resources available. Hundreds of regimental histories were published after the War,1 and Northern and Southern regiments are summarized in major multi-volume works.2 You should check each of those for Great-granddad’s regiment. After checking those, if you are especially interested in the Civil War, there is another resource you really may find rewarding. That is The Official Record of the War of the Rebellion.

The "OR" is by far the largest collection of Union and Confederate military and government records. In 1864, the U.S. War Department began collecting all war-related records it could find -- from the armies and central governments of both sides. The Department meant to preserve records of this great period of history for future generations. The War Department compiled and organized the most significant of these records and from 1881 to 1900 published them in five series, together with a vast atlas of period maps and engravings. The collection totals 128 volumes. Later, the Navy produced a separate 31-volume set of Naval records, called The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion.

For decades, the OR has long been the main source for Civil War scholars. It’s also a good source for family history buffs eager to learn about their great-grandfather’s war experiences.

The OR holds 140,000 pages of government correspondence, military reports, records, orders, memoranda, and war documents of almost every description. Although the collection wasn’t intended principally as a genealogical resource -- for instance, muster rolls, troop rosters, and service records are not included -- tens of thousands of individuals are specifically named, as are nearly all regiments North or South. The entire collection is indexed in detail, allowing you to reconstruct great-grandfather’s experiences, with some detail.

The OR is available at the National Archives in Washington, DC and several of its regional libraries. Most college and university libraries also have sets, and these schools generally welcome visitors to use these resources. The LDS Family History Library lends the OR on microfilm and CD-ROM through local Family History Centers. The entire collection even remains in print.3

Using the OR index is a two-step process. Next to each entry, whether a name (John Smith) or a regimental number (92nd Ohio Infantry), the index lists Roman numerals and Arabic numbers. The Roman numerals identify the series; the Arabic numbers identify volumes. So, if your entry lists "I 23; III 11," that means your target is listed in the indexes of volumes 5 and 23 of series I. That volume index will give you the page numbers where the reference appears.

Bear in mind that the great majority of soldiers will not be individually mentioned in the OR. If great-grandfather was an officer with the rank of major or above, the chances of his appearing are very good. Privates are rarely mentioned, but you can track great-grandfather’s regiment and, for example, read reports prepared by the officers of his regiment, perhaps even of his company.

Let’s consider a few examples. Here’s part of a officer’s report highlighting the heroism of George R. Benedict, a non-commissioned officer who helped lead a regiment of black soldiers in their first real battle of the War.4

  • Fort Smith, Ark., May 20, 1864

Captain: ... Although it was the first engagement of moment in which the regiment had been engaged, I have not seem in the many conflicts I have witnessed during this war, troops who displayed by the colored troops under my command during the battle of Jenkins’ Ferry, and although worn out with fatigue and hunger at the close of the engagement, were loth to leave the field. I here accept the opportunity to render justice to two enlisted men attached to my command, viz., Sergt. John P. Moseley and Private George R. Benedict, Thirteenth Kansas Infantry, the former acting as first sergeant Company B, the latter as sergeant-major of my regiment, both of whom were severely wounded near the latter part of the engagement. No [amount] of praise in this respect would sufficient do justice to their heroic conduct on the field or to their soldierly qualities at all times.

I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

    S.L. Crawford

Colonel, Commanding Second Regiment Kansas Colored Infantry.

  • The following is a matter-of-fact report of Colonel Lewis Benedict summarizing his regiment’s role in a small battle in Louisiana.5

  • Vermillion Bayou [Louisiana]

    November 11, 1863

Captain: I marched my command about 1 mile north of Vermillionville, and took position commanding two roads leading east and west. Captain Trull, with his battery, reported to me, and took position, where the whole force remained until Captain Baker, of General Franklin’s staff, brought me an order from General Lee to move forward to his support, as a superior force of cavalry and infantry was in his front, threatening him. I moved forward until I learned that he was retreating; then retired. Receiving a request to select a good position, where my men would be concealed, I did so, and waited. Our cavalry retreated to our rear, when the enemy advanced to the mouth of the road opening on the plain, and our artillery opened upon them with some effect. After an artillery dual of some twenty minutes, their forces disappeared, and I received orders to retire. I did so, and again took position in obedience to orders from General Lee, in a ditch near Vermillionville; but no enemy appearing, I was ordered to return to this camp.

Our loss is as follows: One hundred and tenth [Regiment], 1 killed, 3 wounded; One hundred and sixty-second, 1 wounded; One hundred and seventy-third, 1 wounded; One hundred and sixty-fifth, none. Total, 1 killed, 5 wounded; all of whom were brought from the field.

I have the honor to be,

    your most obedient servant,

    Lew. Benedict

    Colonel, Commanding.

  • Colonel Lewis Benedict’s death is described in another battle record.6

  • Headquarters Department of the Gulf, Grand Ecore, La.

    April 13, 1864

    Maj-Genl H.W. Halleck

Headquarters of the Army, Washington D.C.

General: ... Skirmishing continued during the afternoon, with occasional discharges of artillery. About 5 o’clock the enemy abandoned all pretension of maneuvering and made a most desperate attach upon the brigades on the left center, commanded by Colonels Benedict and Shaw. The line wavered at this point momentarily, but, supported by the First Vermont Battery, soon regained its position, and the enemy was repulsed. Finding the position so much stronger than anticipated, or in the pursuance of other plans, he gradually worked his way to the center and right, where the same desperate attacks were repeated upon our right flank, the whole force of the enemy gradually concentrating upon our right. The brigades ... repelled every attack, and drove him back with terrible loss. ... The battle lasted until 9 o’clock in the evening. The rebels had concentrated their whole strength in futile efforts to break the line at different points. ... The troops held in reserve moved forward at the critical moment and maintained our position, from which the enemy was driven precipitately and with terrible destruction of life. He fled to the woods upon the right, and was pursued with great energy by the whole of our forces until it was impossible in the darkness to distinguish friend from foe.

The losses were great on both sides, but that of the rebels, as we could judge from the appearance of the battle-field, more than double our own. It is impossible at this time to state the exact extent of our losses. Colonel Lewis Benedict was killed upon the left, at the close of the struggles, having received in the early part of the engagement a severe wound, against which he bore up until the fatal shot deprived him of life. Many most valuable officers fell in leading their troops. We recaptured 3 pieces of cannon, taken on the day previous, 4 or 5 caissons, a large number of small-arms, and 500 prisoners. The loss of the enemy in officers commanding important positions during the day is said by the prisoners captured to have been very great. The rebel officers and men who have fallen into our hands, as well as officers and men of our own command, represent this struggle as more sanguinary and desperate for the brief period it continued than any engagement in which they have ever participated. ...

  • Your most obedient servant

    N.P. Banks

    Major Genl, Commanding

In other entries, I have seen accounts of Abner Benedict’s bravery and dedication; record of Henry Benedict’s hiring of a recruit for the U.S. army; Judge Kirby Benedict’s frustrated correspondence with army brass over travel restrictions in the New Mexico Territory; and the complete reports and transcript of Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Benedict’s court martial for ill-temper and excessive discipline. These are typical of tens of thousands of references waiting for anyone who takes the trouble to look.

Below is a list of all the Benedicts who are specifically identified in the index, and the series and page numbers where they appear. And remember that even if Great-granddad isn’t listed here, chances are that his regiment does appear.

    Notes:

1.The two general references for finding regimental histories and narratives are C. Dornbusch, Military Biography of the Civil War (NY Public Library 1961-72) and A. Nevins, J. Robertson, & B. Wiley, Civil War Books: A Critical Biography (LSU Press 1975). Be sure to contact the state library in Great-grandfather’s home state for information. Many state archives have compiled rosters and large collections of regimental histories, officers’ biographies, and soldier narratives. An example is W. Thrift, Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion, (E. English, State Printer, 1908) (six volumes).

    2. A major reference for federal regiments is F. Dyer, A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion (pub. 1908, reprinted by Yoseloff Publishing 1959). For Confederates, consult C. Evans, Confederate Military History (pub. 1899, reprinted by Yoseloff Publishing 1963).

    3. The CD-ROM is published by H-Bar Enterprises of Oakman, Ala. The microfilm is published by the National Archives. The OR volumes are reprinted by the National Historical Society, P.O. Box 8200, Harrisburg, PA 17105.
