Asenath Caroline Benedict (1816-1851), wife of James Monroe Pagaud
By James Blain*
My wife's great-great grandmother, Asenath Caroline Benedict 7, (Eri or Eric6, Daniel5, John4, John3, John2, Thomas1) is not named in either Volume I or Volume II of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America. Instead, her father Eri (or Eric), baptized 15 April 1770, completes the line in the book. Vol. I does say that "Eri moved to Greenfield, Saratoga Co., New York with his brother John, and was living there 17 April 1799; thence he went to Nine Mile Creek, Onondaga Co., and may have finally settled in Michigan."1 Eri's daughter Maria is named and "probably other children. Maria went to Texas." Asenath Caroline Benedict who married James Monroe Pagaud and lived in Louisiana, was not identified. This account will focus on the descendants of Eri Benedict through Asenath.
Placement of Asenath in Eri's family comes from her brother Herman's will.1 Additional information is from published sources as noted below.
First Generation
1. Eri or Eric Benedict6 ( Daniel5, John4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born in New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut and was christened 15 April 1770 in New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut. He may have died in Michigan.3 He had the following children:
2. i. Herman Benedict7 was of Camillus, Onondaga County, New York. He died 3 January 1834 in Camillus, Onondaga, New York.4
3. ii. Mariah Benedict. who married [?Allen C.] Wilbur before 1834 in New York.5
4. iii. Almira Benedict. who married [?Joseph] Graham before 1834 in New York.6
5. iv. J. W. Benedict was born about 1814 in New York. He lived on Post Office Street, west of Tremont, in Galveston, Galveston County, Texas in 1850.7 In the 1850 federal census of Galveston, Texas (p. 283) he is shown as age 36 and born in New York. He was a shoemaker. His wife Abigail was born in Ohio. I think her age was 30 but I seem not to have recorded it. Children, all born in Texas, were Letitia, 9; E. Rollin, 5; Jared L., 3; and an infant. According to family sources the infant died within the next year. I have no further track on his family beyond 1851.
+ 6 v. Asenath Caroline Benedict (1816 - 1851)
Second Generation
6. Asenath Caroline Benedict7, (Eri or Eric6, Daniel5, John4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 17 October 1816 in Onondaga County, New York and was christened 25 May 1817 in Onondaga.(8) She died 22 June 1851 in Galveston, Texas and was buried about 23 June 1851 in City Cemetery in Galveston. On 20 April 1848 in Lafayette Presbyterian Church, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, she married James Monroe Pagaud, born 4 March 1817 in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of James H. Pagaud and Ruth Steiger, widow of Rev. Thomas Hume. James Monroe Pagaud died 16 June 1895 in New Orleans.9 They had the following child:
+ 7. i. James Monroe Pagaud, Jr.8 (1849 - 1918)
Third Generation
7. James Monroe Pagaud, Jr.8 (Asenath Caroline Benedict7, Eri or Eric6, Daniel5, John4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 4 March 1849 in New Orleans. He died 27 March 1918 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. On 29 December 1874 in New Orleans. James, Jr. married first, Mary Virginia Hadden, born 10 August 1851 in New Orleans, the daughter of David Hadden and Elizabeth Lattimore. She died 30 October 1889 in New Orleans, the same day twins were born.10 James, Jr. married second, Elizabeth Oliver, widow of Robert Manson.11 James, Jr. and his first wife Mary are both buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery in New Orleans.
The following children were born of James Monroe Pagaud, Jr. and Mary Virginia Hadden:
8. i. William Lattimore Pagaud7 was born 20 October 1875 in New Orleans. He died 12 September 1912 and was buried in Washington Cemetery, New Orleans.12
9. ii. Elizabeth Hadden Pagaud was born 12 April 1879 in New Orleans. She died 20 May 1962 in New Orleans.13
10. iii. Jessie Lackland Pagaud was born
1 February 1883 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. She died 29 Jun 1950 in Brevard, Transylvania County, North Carolina and was buried in First Presbyterian Cemetery, Columbia, South Carolina. Jessie married (1) Thaddeus Weir Coleman, son of Col.Thaddeus Charles Coleman and Mary Elizabeth Sloan on 6 February 1908 in Prytania Street Presbyterian Church, New Orleans, Louisiana. Thaddeus was born 23 November 1879 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He died 20 Jul 1933 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. This couple has 22 living descendants.14
11. iv. Mary Virginia Pagaud (twin) was born 30 October 1889 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana. She died 14 March 1950 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana and was buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery, New Orleans.15
12. v. James Lea Pagaud (twin) was born 30 October 1889 in New Orleans. He died 1 September 1919 in New Orleans and was buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana.16

Peru,
New York Historian Writes
From Nancy L. La Mar, 192 John Boswell
Rd., Peru, NY. 12972, e-mail: nancy11@delphi.com
I am the Peru town historian and a descendant of Ruth BENEDICT who married Sylvanus CANFIELD. I have seen their home on Route 22 B, Village of Morrisonville, Town of Schuyler Falls. Their marriage is listed in the vital records at Montpelier, Vermont as being at Arlington, Bennington Co., Vermont. A couple of children are listed as born at Arlington, the rest are born in New York.
Their son, Almon S. CANFIELD married Nancy CROMAC. To date, I have been unable to locate her father, but Almon's obituary said he was a woolen manufacturer who left England in a cask on a boat bound for Massachusetts. He set up mills along the Merrimack, and also peddled his wares. According to the obituary in the Plattsburg Sentinel he was last seen entering the woods with one Mr. Taggert and was believed to have been killed by him.
Almon and Nancy's daughter was Alzina V. CANFIELD. She married Enoch EMERY, a descendant of John EMERY, the immigrant, and they had a son William. William and his wife, Jeannette CLINE, had a daughter, Nina Maude EMERY, who was my grandmother.
Ruth was the daughter of Caleb BENEDICT5, (James4, James3, James 2, Thomas1) and Ruth (BENEDICT) BENEDICT7, (Ebenezer4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Thomas1). Ebenezer's second wife was Mary (BENEDICT) WHITE3, (James2, Thomas1) widow, who he married September 1763. Ebenezers first wife, Rachel BENEDICT4, (James2, Thomas1) must have been Ruth7s mother since Ruth7 was married to Caleb the same year her father married Mary. The Genealogy of the Benedicts in American, Vol. I [p. 292] genealogy lists Ruth4 as born 19 September 1767. Her gravestone, found in the West Plattsburgh Union Cemetery reads 11 September 1767. I have pictures of her stone and that of Sylvanus CANFIELD. Many of their descendants are also in that cemetery. New York did not require records to be kept until 1890, so there is a loss of 100 years, as most people from New England began to arrive in this area about 1790. Previous to that, the lines are mostly French Canadian.
The Peru BENEDICT family were among the first settlers in 1790, as were the Morrisonville CANFIELD/BENEDICT family. Among the records I have is a notation by a Mr. Harkness, one of the early town historians that in trying to put together a history of the early residents, he had received a letter from Mrs. Thomas BULL (Sylvia BENEDICT) who said Aaron and John were her father's brothers. Her father was Jonathan4 (Joseph3, John2, Thomas1). There were also citations about the family in Ohio from other letters.
Cyrus BENEDICT's wedding to Hannah BARKER was the first wedding to be held in the Quaker meeting house built in 1795, and there are several articles about this. [See this newsletter, Vol. 4, No. 2., pp. 15, 18-19, "Hannah (Barker) and Cyrus Benedicts Wedding."]
Update on Daughters of Enoch Benedict
From John Allen, M.D., 11 S. 19th St.,
Montevideao MN 56265, author of "Descendants of Electa Mercy
Allen and Susan Van Marter, Daughters of Enoch Benedict of
Groton, New York", BFHN, Vol. IV, No. 3, Winter 1997.
I rechecked the Federal Censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 for James Allen. In the first three censuses the entries are in Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census the family is living in Mead Township.
In 1850, page 2 of Woodcock Borough, page 182 of Crawford Co., there is an entry for Allen, male - age 19. Place of birth given as Pennsylvania. Since no first name is given, I suspect that the census taker got the information from a [non-family member] informant. The age does correspond with James birth date in 1831.
In the 1860 census, page 29, Woodcock Township., the family is listed as: James Allen age 28, Lucy age 25, Mercy age 58, Mary age 2. Amos VanMarter age 46 and Susan age 42, plus seven children, are the next entry in the census.
In the 1870 census, Page 2, Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania the family is listed as Allen, James H. age 39, birthplace New York, occupation butcher; Lucy, age 36, keeping house, birthplace New York. Mary age 12, E. Johnny age 9, George E. age 7, Ruben A. age 6; Harry J. age 1.
In the 1880 census the family is listed on page 50, Mead Township., Crawford County - James age 48, farmer, Lucia age 45, Mary age 21, John age 19, Albert age 17, Harry age 12, Frank age 10, Rolland age 4 and Anna age 1. Mercy is not listed.
I do have an old photo, on glass, of Mercy. She is listed as "Grandmother of Frank, Only son James Allen." As I noted, the family has always believed that James was an only child. The Enoch Allen story listing children George, Burdette and Mary do not match up here. I will send you a copy machine copy of the picture. I did make a photo copy of it, but it is no better than the copy machine copy.
I am taking orders for the family book now, The Treasure [about family of James Henry Allen]. Cost will be $35, to include shipping and handling. Perhaps some of the Benedict Family History News subscribers would be interested.
More Letters, Rev. George Benedict of Arkansas
From the Genealogy of the Benedicts
in America, Vol. II by Elwyn E. Benedict (1969), in the
"unconnected section", pp. 476,477 comes the following:
"Rev. George L., Sr., a Baptist Clergyman, m. Miss Love. (Another report lists him as Calvin or Carroll Benedict).
2. Russell
3. Emma
4. Harry
5. Daughter, died age 9"
[There is more detail on this man, his parents and his siblings and their children, and his children. Unfortunately the genealogy takes it no further back than George's father, John C. Benedict, born and reared in N.Y. City, probably of German parentage.]
The following letter from Jane H. Peyrouse, 515 Forest Road, Fayetteville NC 28305-4601, e-mail: janehp@aol.com, sheds some light but at the same time adds mystery:
"The marriage of the Rev. George Benedict to Miss Levisa William Love was performed in Conway County (Arkansas) on 5 January 1848 and reported in the Arkansas State Democrat on 14 January 1848. I checked the source myself in Little Rock.
"I know that you have the Rev. George listed as a Baptist but the federal census for 1860 for Cadron Township, Conway County, Arkansas, family 239/239, has him listed as age 44 male and a Methodist minister and farmer worth $4500 personal property and $20,000 in real estate. Of course it is entirely possible that he changed denominations later, but the Love family were staunch Methodists and I have thought that they met when he was on a preaching circuit in Van Buren County, Arkansas where the Love family lived. The 1860 census shows him age 44, Lavisa age 30, born in North Carolina (this checks with other information I have on the Love family). The children were Jno W. Benedict age 7 male, Wm. H. Benedict age 5 male, Noah W. Benedict age 4 male, Emma J. Benedict age 1 female. All the children were born in Arkansas.
"The names of the children are so different [from the genealogy] that I wonder whether this is the same family. The 1850 federal census has them living in Pyatt Township, Pulaski County, Arkansas, household 800/809, with George 34 male listed as a farmer worth $3000 with wife Lavinia aged 19 female, born in North Carolina, Mary 1 year old, born in Arkansas, and Elizabeth 3/12 female, also born Arkansas.
"The only one of the family I remember from my growing up days in Conway, is Emma who made her home after her mother died with her aunt Elizabeth Goodin Love Harton, wife of John James Harton, M.D. of Quitman, Cleburne County, Arkansas. The Hartons oldest child was my grandfather Daniel O. Harton who moved to Conway in the 1880s.
"I have never seen Emmas grave and I would guess that she died in the 1940s. She is not buried at Goodloe Chapel where the other Loves and Hartons are, or in the Methodist cemetery in Quitman or at least I couldnt find the marker."

Voter Rolls - 1890, Los Angeles County, California
Submitted by Sheila Benedict, C.G.R.S.
Genealogical researchers who have attempted to trace the movements of their families, know the frustration of not having available an 1890 Federal Population Census. A disastrous fire in the Commerce Department in 1921 destroyed or badly damaged almost all of the regular population census. If you find your family in 1900, the next step back would be 1880 - unless you have the good fortune of a Union soldier or widow enumerated in the 1890 Special Census.
Because California became home to so many migrating families, the California State Genealogical Alliance (CSGA) is attempting to fill the gap created by the absense of a regular 1890 census. Several years ago, CSGA engaged the assistance of member societies throughout the state to take the 1890 Voter Rolls - called the Great Register of Voters - and index the names. The full schedules are difficult to use as you must have an address to find the precinct, then locate the enumeration district, etc. Yes, only head of household males are listed, but since there is virtually nothing left of 1890, having those names is a major step forward.
The indexing project has been an ongoing feat for many years but there is light at the end of the tunnel. As of this writing, only a handful of counties need to be completed. The projected completion of the statewide index may be as soon as 1998, hopefully, no later that 2000.
In the meantime, many of the participating societies have used their county index as a fundraising tool in addition to sending a master copy to CSGA. What does that mean to BENEDICT researchers? As with others, it means a chance to fill that gap between 1900 and 1880. For that reason, from time to time, listings from available countywide indexes will be printed in BFHN. If a California ancestor is located, available city directories could continue the trail. The registration date and age can be used to approximate birthdate; birthplace might help locate data in that state or verify that you have the correct person.
The following is extracted from the Los Angeles County 1890 Great Register of Voters Index, compiled by the Whittier Area Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 4367, Whittier CA 90607, c1993, p. 22. The page number below corresponds to the actual voter roll; the original register includes occupation. All surnames are BENEDICT (naturalization data did not apply to any of these names - it is provided for information only):
