Haney, David Meadow (b. 12 DEC 1826, d. 10 JUL 1893)
Note: David Meadow Haney was a rancher and a farmer. About 1843 or 1844 Isaac moved his family to Bethel, Tennessee. Bethel is located on the south state line of Tennessee and the north state line of Alabama. In Alabama, he met and married a lady named Elizabeth Jane Pettus.
David and Elizabeth had six children before they moved to Texas in 1858. The records show the second child, Martha, died at age 2. Their fourth child died at age 1 in Alabama. We have no found that David Meadow and Elizabeth owned any land in Limestone County or Giles County, Tennessee. Back then people sometimes lived with their parents or rented land to farm on. We think that David Meadow and his family moved to Texas after his sixth child was born. David and Elizabeth had seventeen children.
I have heard my father, Charles W. Haney, tell people that David and Elizabeth came from either Mississippi or Alabama. For some unknown reason he really did not know that they came from Alabama. He did not know any further back that David Meadow. It seemed strange to me that they never talked about Isaac or any of David Meadow's siblings or even knew about Limestone County, Alabama or Union County, South Carolina. His father, Demarcus Boyd never told my father just where he came from.
David Meadow was a farmer and rancher. He also raised fine riding horses. We do have records where he bought land in Nacogdoches County, Texas. David Meadow served in the civil war in Company "H", 4th Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers CSA. We also found that he was in the 14th Regiment, Texas Calvalry (Johnson's Mounted Volunteers). From Confederate Records. He has a Confederate States of America Plaque on his grave in Greenwood Cemetery. David Meadow was listed as a registered voter in Nacogdoches County in 1867. He had been registered for seven years. David Meadow Haney purchased 191 1/4 acres of land in Nacogdoches County from a W. G. Whitaker on June 1869 for $500.00. Recorded in book Q, page 270. His will is recorded in Nacogdoches County, Texas book B. page 336. Executors of the will were listed as D. B. Haney and W. C. Haney.
Some of the records from Limestone County, Alabama were missing and never found after the Civil War. When the County Probate Judge heard that a Russian Born General Turchin and his troops were on the way, he packed up all the records and shipped them to State of Georgia for storage. The records were later shipped into South Carolina. While in storage some of the boxes were broken open and the records were lost. After the war was over they were returned to Limestone County. General Turchin was a treacherous person. When he would capture a town or community he would give his troops forty-eight hours to do what ever they wanted. They plundered, killed, burned and raped. Basically did whatever they pleased. I understand that a complaint was lodged with the War Department after the war but no action was taken against him.
He has CSA stone at his grave site and Masonic Emblem on the gravestone.
