Re: Re: FREND
Dear Brian,
Thanks for yours of the 27th. I am giving here all that I have in connection with FREND, except the newer generations. The record/page or folio numbers are from INDIA OFFICE records, Madras presidency.
One of my father's uncles ARCHIBALD BENJAMIN HART, born Madras 1856 (V 37 P14) was a schoolmaster). He married CATHERINE FREND on 29.1.1879. Catherine, daughter of Albert and Catherine FREND, a farmer, of Ootacamund [in the Nilgiri hills of South India] was born on 31.3.1858, baptised10.12.1871 at Ootacamund (V52 P 207). The couple had seven children, born between 1879 and 1895. They were a very happy family, very friendly with my parents, who were stationed in the Nilgiris during and soon after World War I. ( I was born at Ootacamund in 1923, when my father was stationed there as a forest officer). Catherine was affectionately known as "Aunt Kate". Catherine died in 1935 at Wellington (V 173 P 554); her husband died in 1902 at COONOOR (v 92 p 142). All her children were baptised as "Frend Harts". Three daughters married in the area of Wellington/Coonoor:-
CATHERINE MAUD to William H. FOWLES
FLORENCE AMELIA to John HACKETT ("Jack")
IRIS MABEL to Edward HARRISON.
All three husbands were serving British soldiers at that time (1913, 1914, 1921). None of that generation are now alive, but there are FOWLES, HACKETT and HARRISON children and grandchildren in the U.K. and Australia, some of whom I have a few details. In case you need further details of the FREND-HART clan, I shall send them to you.
From the details which you gave, there seems to be a definite link up with your ALBERT FREND, who may be a generation or two earlier. My FREND-HARTS were mainly British military families. Wellington was, and is still, a military station in India. I did my Staff College Course there in 1954-55. By then, most of the children had emigrated to the U.K. or Australia.
I live in Sydney. I hope this is of use to you. Please let me know if you need more details of the later generations. If you have access to OIOC (now in British Library, London) or even the Mormon (LDS) family centres, you may be able to find more FRENDS (I did not search backwards from my Aunt Kate). If not familiar with the LDS procedure, please see Cathy Day's home page. The LDS has a complete set of old IOLR indexes and records on mag tapes, which you can order. First look at Indexes; then when you find Vol/Page numbers and dates, order the actual rtecords on msag tape. You will find very little Indian data on the CDs in the IGI set at LDS. Out of hundreds of my HARTS I found a handful in the IGI !
With best regatrds,
Mowbray Hart
(Sydney, Australia)
