GENERAL INFORMATION
(IN)FAMOUS PEOPLE
JOHN COLLINS (1859 - 1932)

The Collinsville tradition began in 1889 with the purchase of 50,000 acres by
John Collins and the registration of the stud in 1895 launched a genetic strain
which would eventually become the most dominant and successful in the world.
Apart from its rule of the Australian gene pool, Collinsville rams have sold to
all major wool producing countries around the world including Argentina,
Uruguay, Mexico, New Zealand, USSR, China, South Africa and the United States.
Owned and operated by the Collins family until the mid 1980s, Collinsville has
been committed to breeding a large-framed, heavy-cutting sheep that could
withstand all elements while achieving high lambing percentages.
Its aggregation spreads from the low rainfall salt bush outside country to the
rich and fertile lucerne/cropping country of Stud Park and the famous Booborowie
Valley properties and it annually sells more than 3000 Merino rams.
This variation of country has given Collinsville the opportunity to lamb stud
ewes on both Collinsville itself and the rich inside country to develop the
constitution, heavy fleeces and large frames of the Collinsville Merino,
considered to be some of the best in the world.
The Collinsville Stud is considered around the world as the most significant stud in the history of the Australian Merino industry.
