The Mann Family



Manerva Caroline Mann, wife of John M. Clayton, is listed on the 1850 census of Itawamba County, Mississippi as an seventeen year old daughter of Abner L. Mann and his wife Elizabeth (Elizabeth is apparently a second wife and may not be the mother of Caroline). Some notes on the Mann family follow:


Newberry Co., SC Wills; Vol.1, Bk. A, p.16. Will of Robert Man dated 27 Mar, 1782; proven Sep. 6, 1787, Names wife Sufanna Man; sons James, John, and Robert; and grandson Manfse Man. Also named but relationship not clear were Jean Nix and Sufanna Man (daughters?).

Newberry Co., SC Wills; Vol.1, Bk. C, pp.25-26. Will of Susannah Man dated Aug. 21, 1797; proven Feb. 1, 1801. Names sons James, John, and Robert and Jane Man daughter of Robert. Wives of John and Robert mentioned but not named.


Will of James Mann. Elbert Co.,Ga. Writen June 26, 1814. Estate to wife Judith during her life time then to be divided between sons John, Joel, Jesse, James, Jerimiah, Asa, and Henry; and daughters Martha Shackelford and Elizabeth Roebuck. Property mentioned includes negro slaves Daniel, Dosha, and Silva. Wife, Judith and son, John named executors. Will proven Aug. 11, 1814.

   the 27th of Nov. 1847 in the 75th year of his age.

   In memory of Mr. George Roebuck who was born 24th Dec. 1778
   and departed this life the 16th May 1854.

   Mrs. Elizabeth J. Roebuck who was born 20th Nov. 1783 and departed
   this life the 10th Dec. 1843.

James Mann died intestate. Alfred H. Roebuck, administrator. 17 Jan. 1848. Heirs: Abner Mann, William H. Mann, James Mann, John Mann, Edmund Mann, Allen Mann and Judeth Shepherd, late Judeth Mann, children of Joel Mann, deceased, who was a brother of said intestate, whose ages are unknown but believed to be 21 years of age; Washam Mann, Asa Mann, T.A. Mann, Sarah Aiken and Frances Malone, children of John Mann, deceased, brother of said deceased, whose ages are unknown but believed to be 21; Jesse Mann of lawful age, Robert B. Mann, Sarah Morgan, Nancy Reives, and Elizabeth Reives, children of Jeremiah Mann, brother of said deceased, ages unknown but believed to be 21 (under?) except Robert B. Mann, who is of lawful age (?) Residence of all are unknown; Martha Shackleford, sister of intestate, of lawful age, your petitioner, George J. Roebuck and Luisa C. Hickman, wife of William P. Hickman, who are of lawful age, and children of Elizabeth Roebuck, deceased, sister of said deceased. 26 May 1849.
