Note:  The following record was transcribed from posts made to the NORTHEAST-ROOTS-L mailing list by Paul Holzwarth in April, 1998.  These lists are not in alphabetical order, but were apparently transcribed as the graves are arranged in the cemeteries.  Any noticeable typographical errors caused as a result of the text being scanned and read by machine were removed, but otherwise, this is just as Mr. Holzwarth submitted them, so these may have typographical errors from the book itself, or from Mr. Holzwarth.  Since I am a descendant of Timothy and Bethiah (Waite) Burnap I have added pertinent details in brackets [ ] to the records on members of that family.

INSCRIPTIONS IN THE CEMETERIES OF
SUTTON, MASSACHUSETTS

BY REUBEN RAWSON DODGE, PRINTED IN WORCESTER, MASS.
BY PRESS OF CHARLES HAMILTON, 811 MAIN STREET, 1898

PREFACE

In collecting the Inscriptions from the monuments and headstones of the several cemeteries, contained in this pamphlet, I will mention, that a few years ago in looking, for an hour or two, over one of the cemeteries where I was best acquainted, I found by copying off some forty or fifty names of persons with whom I was familiar when they were living having arrived at the age of nearly eighty years myself, noticing that a large majority had passed away before they were sixty years old and many of them much younger, I was deeply impressed at the very brief time that was allotted to those who had gone before me, and that I was left; and thus it occurred to me that by copying off the inscriptions and printing them it would remind many, who had friends buried in these cemeteries, how many had died, and bring to mind a large number whom they had almost forgotten. To the History of Sutton, published in 1878, I furnished considerable historical and genealogical matter, but failed to notice the part relating to the different cemeteries.

THE SUTTON CENTRE CEMETERY—This contains a large number of the old families who were prominent in the early settlement of the town.

THE HOWARD CEMETERY—Began in 1862, situated one mile southeast of Sutton Centre, has been used to succeed the one at Sutton Centre, that being not considered proper to use longer.  It has many fine monuments, and prominent people from different parts of the town are buried there.

THE ARMSBY CEMETERY—Situated two miles southeast of Sutton Centre has been used over one hundred and twenty years.  It contains the remains of some of the old families in the east part of Sutton — the Armsby, Woodbury, Day, Burnap and King.

THE DODGE CEMETERY is situated in the extreme east part of Sutton and has been used about one hundred and twenty years.  It contains many prominent families — the Batcheller, Hicks, Leland, Hall, Slocumb, McClellan, Pierce, and Dodge.

THE WILKINSONVILLE CEMETERY is located one mile at the extreme northeasterly part of Sutton.  It has been used over one hundred and twenty-five years.  It contains a very large number of prominent families — the Chace, Dudley, Brown and Newton — and during the past forty years there has been a large number of Scotch-Irish Presbyterian families buried here.

THE ARMORY VILLAGE, MILLBURY CEMETERY, near the Electric Railroad Station, now Millbury, but formerly a part of Sutton, is probably the oldest cemetery. It contains ten or more Revolutionary soldiers' graves, which are marked.  Among the old families were the Waters, Chace, Dudley, March, Goodale, Rawson, Stiles, Dwinnell.  The ancestors of the well-known Chace family were buried here.  Daniel Chace was the progenitor of Bishop Philander Chace and Judge Salmon P. Chase, formerly Secretary of the U. S. Treasury; also George P. Chase, the well-known president of the Hartford Insurance Company.  Ebenezer Rawson, the well-known antiquarian and historian, has a large marble headstone in the centre of this cemetery.

The Millbury Cemetery,
Town of Sutton,
Worcester County, Massachusetts

From the center of Sutton, take Singletarry Road to West Main St. in Millbury, through the center of Millbury continue onto Rt 122A, just past Garetti Supermarket and across from the Massachusetts Electric Company.  This is approximately 5 miles from the center of Sutton.

[Additional Note:  In the book Centennial History of the Town of Millbury, Massachusetts, published in 1915, pp. 500-508, this cemetery was also called the "Providence Street Cemetery" and the "County Bridge Cemetery."  The land on which it is situated was originally part of the farm of William Waite, but he sold it to a group of people that included Timothy Burnap, Sr. in April, 1785, for use as a cemetery.  A copy of the land deed is on p. 500 of this book.]
