Our first record of our line of Sampley/Sample ancestors is of John Sample. He was an immigrant from Ireland. He was born 1742 or before. He died circa 1779. He lived in Spartenburg, South Carolina. Later he lived in Richmond County, Georgia. He had a homestead in Richmond Co. Georgia. He served in the Revolutionary War for three years and was taken prisoner by the Tories and died while in prison. Early census records indicate that his wife may have been Sarah Elizabeth Sample. His parents are unknown. John Sample's children were Nancy: We have no further information on her. Charles: He fought in the Frontier War in Georgia in 1793 and may have moved to Tennessee. Sarah: no further information on her. John Jr.: We found a John Sample living in Forsyth County Georgia. His children were Zachariah, Charles, Jesse, Matthew and Thomas. Also he had daughters. John died after 1850. Jesse Sample/Sampley: This is our direct ancestor. The Revolutionary War records of Jesse Sampley provide us with much valuable information about his family. In the State of Tennessee McMinn county Circuit Court on the 22nd day of April 1833, appeared Jesse Sampley. He was in court trying to obtain his Revolutionary War Pension. He was at this time a resident of Rhea County, Tennessee. He stated that he had only lived in Rhea County for 12 months and had not yet established friendship with people who could attest to his character or to the fact that he had been a Revolutionary Soldier. He further stated that he had many acquaintances in McMinn and Monroe counties. So we assume that Jesse lived in Monroe and McMinn counties for several years. We have not been able to obtain many records on our Sampley family from McMinn and Monroe counties, Tenn. However, we do know that Jesse Sampley Jr. obtained a marriage license in McMinn. Co. Tennessee. Jesse Sampley was born 1763/64 in Spartenburg, South Carolina. When he was young his family moved to Richmond County, Georgia. His father was killed by the Tories and he fled to Edgefield District, South Carolina where he resided with his mother. He volunteered in the company Of Horse 1779. He served for about 4 years and told of the Squirmishes he fought in and the names of his officers. One of his officers was Insign Luker. William Luker would later become his father-in-law. Revolutionary War Records acquaint us with the places where our Sampley family lived. Jesse Sampley lived in Columbia Co. Georgia. There he married Naomi Luker September 1, 1794. Her parents were William and Lourany Luker. Later the family resided in Clark County, Georgia. From there they moved to Pendleton, South Carolina. Sometimes between 1807 and 1814, Jesse and his family migrated into Eastern Tennessee. The family lived in the following counties in East Tennessee. Blount: Warren: Monroe: McMinn: Rhea: Bradley:. Jesse declared that he lost his discharge papers in 1815 as he traveled through the Cherokee Nation. We speculate that in 1815, the family may have traveled back to Georgia to visit with Naomi's mother. Our direct ancestor David Jonathan Sampley was born October 7, 1814 in Blount Co. Tennessee. He was the son of Jesse and Naomi Sampley . His brothers and sisters were born in South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. From census records, land records and miscellaneous records we have determined as best we could who the siblings of David Jonathan were. They are as follows: John: born circa 1793-1796. He was a farmer and married to Spicey. He died after 1850 and lived in Jackson Co. Alabama. William: born 1799 South Carolina, married to Mary and died after 1850 in North Alabama. Charles: born 1802, wife Mary and died after 1850, probably North Alabama. Sarah Elizabeth: (questionable) born circa 1803, married Elijah Farmer. Levi M. (Matthew) born Jan. 31, 1804 Georgia. Died after 1870. Lived in DeKalb and Jackson counties, Alabama. First wife Susannah and last wife Frances. Buried in Jackson Co. Alabama. Jesse Jr: born 1807 Georgia died 1864. Married Deborah Browder Dec. 29, 1836, McMinn Co. Tenn. Buried DeKalb Co. Alabama. Paralee: born 1810 married Martin Sample. Living 1880 in North Alabama. George W: born circa 1812, married Mary Rominos , Rhea Co. Tenn., 1831. Nellie Ellender: born circa 1817, married Larkin Maness, 1833 Rhea Co. Tenn. Maness family moved to Arkansas after 1850. Isaac P.: born circa 1819 married to Mary A. and died after 1870, probably North Alabama. Also we have Sarah Sampley. She married C. L. Manes. She was either a daughter of Jesse and Naomi or a granddaughter. Our direct ancestor David Jonathan Sampley was born 1814, Blount Co. Tennessee. He came to Lowndes Co. Alabama in 1836 as a Volunteerer in the Indian War. He was injured in battle and lost an eye. He married Belinda J. McFarland December 29, 1836 in Lowndes Co. Alabama. Belinda was born May 23, 1816 in south Carolina. She died October 11, 1871 in Ft. Deposit, Alabama. Her husband David J., remarried and had 3 more children by his last marriage. Children of David and Belinda were as follows: James A.: Jesse Says: John: Naomi: Belinda: Sarah Ellen: George: twins Lehmon and Elizabeth, David Peyton Pope Pius, our direct ancestor: Susan: Thomas: Children of David J. and Julia H. were Levi: Addie: James E. David Peyton Sampley married Mary E. Perdue. He and Mary raised their children in Butler Co. Alabama. Many of our ancestors still live in that area. Our ancestor, Jesse Sampley received a land grant for 600 acres in Rhea County, Tennessee. He later sold the land. By 1839, Jesse and his family were in Jackson and DeKalb Counties in North Alabama. His wife Naomi died May 19th, 1847 in DeKalb Co. Alabama. Jesse is listed in the 1850 census of DeKalb Co. He is listed as being 90 years old and is living in the home of Levi Sampley. I have been told that Jesse died in 1852. He was not listed in the 1860 census records. Many of the descendants of Jesse Sample moved on to Arkansas, Texas and other places. Some still live in North Alabama. Submitted by Melba Sampley Fuller
