13. MARY3 CARTER (GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born 1787 in Georgia, and died 1846

in Lowndes Co, Georgia. She married SAMUEL E SWILLEY February 27, 1817 in

Reidsville, Tattnall, Georgia, son of SAMUEL SWILLEY and SARAH. He was

born 1793 in Washington Co, Georgia, and died 1846 in Lowndes Co, Georgia.

Notes for SAMUEL E SWILLEY:

Samuel E. Swilley, first representative from Appling County (in 1820), was

born in 1793 in Washington County (territory later cut into Tattnall

County), a son of Samuel Swilley, R. S. He grew up in Tattnall and Liberty

Counties and was married in Tattnall County, February 27, 1817 to Mary

Carter, daughter of George Carter. She was a sister of Capt. Jesse Carter

(Vol. 1). To them were born a large family of children of whom only five

lived to be grown and married.

Mr. Swilley was among the first settlers of Appling County when it was

first opened to settlers, and moved there from Tattnall County. He was

elected the first representative from the new county in 1820 and served in

the 1820 and 1821 sessions. He was then elected State Senator from Appling

County and served 1823, 1824, 1825. In 1825 he was elected on the Inferior

Court bench of Appling for a four-year term, but resigned in 1827, moved to

Lowndes County, and settled on Hammock Lake. He served as Justice of

Peace, 662nd district of Lowndes 1830-1833. In the Indian War in 1838, he

was a private in Capt. David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes County militia

and served other enlistments also.

Mr. Swilley seems to have prospered owning several plantations in addition

to his home place plantation which was a very large one. Extant records of

Lowndes County show that he owned lots of land 29, 32, 62, 74, 75, 76, 96,

111, 112, and 229 in the 16th district and Lot 316, 10th district, all in

Lowndes County, several hundred head of cattle and twenty-seven slaves, and

other property. His son-in-law, R. H. Wisenbaker, and son Wiley T.

Swilley, applied for administration on his estate January 12, 1847 and were

appointed, but the son was taken sick and died within a few days. On March

24, 1847, the son-in-law, Mr. Bevill, applied and was appointed

administrator in lieu of the deceased son.

Mr. Swilley and his wife and most of their children were victims of a

malignant fever in the fall and winter of 1846, and a fever that the

physicians were unable to cope with. For lack of a better name, it was

referred to for many years as "the Swilley fever" by residents of this

section.

and republished in The Valdosta Times November 28, 1885: "About 40 or 50

years ago my father, Robert Prine, lived on Hammock Lake in Lowndes County.

He and Capt. Samuel E. Swilley owned the lake . . . Capt. Swilley was a

jovial, good-natured man, one who delighted in teasing little boys. . . He

with most of his family passed off with that malignant disease known as the

Swilley fever."

Notes for JAMES THOMPSON BEVILL:

James Thompson Beville was born in Screven County, May 1.3, 1819, a son of

Granville Beville (Vol.III). He came with his parents when they moved to

Lowndes County about 1840, where he was married in 1843 to Lucy J. Swilley,

born 1823, died 1847, daughter of Samuel E. Swilley (Vol.II). By her two

children wer born, viz:

1. Mary R. b. 1844, m. Lawson B. Zeigler.

2. Granville b. 1845, m. Eliza Frances Tucker, dau. of Jordan. Moved to

Florida.

Soon after his first wife's death Mr. Beville married her sister, Sarah M.

Swilley, May 19, 1847. She was born 1827, and died in 1856. By her were

born:

3. Celia Virginia. b. 1848, died young.

4. Nathaniel Hudson b. 1852, m. Ann Frances

5. David C. b. 1854, m. Mollie E. Cox, Nov. 30, 1875.

6. Sarah Frances b. 1856, m. Harden Beville of Sumter Co., Fla.

On Jan. 11, 1858, Mr. Beville married a third time, to Nancy A. Wilson,

born 1834 in Georgia, daughter of Orizba Wilson. She died in 1862. Born by

her were two children:

7. John T. b. 1859, died single about 1880.

8. R. J. b. 1862, m. (unknown).

Mr. Beville's fourth and last wife was Miss Dalton B. Martin to whom he was

married in Lowndes County, June 15, 1865. She was a graduate of Temple

College, Newnan, Ga. By her five children were born, viz:

9. Hattie Payson b. 1865, m. George L. Bliss.

10. Smith Martin b. 1868, m. Frances Teeple.

11. Cora Llewllyn b. 1870, m. Ernest Porter.

12. Paul Baxter b. 1873, m. Mary Alice Myhand.

13. Dalton Byrd b. 1875, m. Eugene L. Menefee.

Mr. Beville served as a Justice of Lowndes Inferior Court, 1859-1861. In

the Civil War he served as Captain of the "Valdosta Guards" which became

Co. "D", 50th Georgia Regiment; he served from its organization, March 4,

1862, until he resigned June 9, 1863.

In January, 1886, Mr. Beville having sold out his farm property and home in

Lowndes County, moved with his wife and the children born by her, to

Visalia, California, where he died May 13, 1892. He and most of his family

were Inembers. of Corinth Baptist Church, near which they lived. He was

also a member of the Masonic Order, having received his degrees in 1856 in

St. John The Baptist Lodge, No. 184, at Troupville.

iii. SARAH ANN SWILLEY, b. 1827; m. JAMES THOMPSON BEVILL; b. 1819; d.

1892.

14. ISAAC3 CARTER (GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born Abt. 1790 in South Carolina,

and died 1854 in Georgia. He married ELEANOR TESTON. She was born 1790 in

South Carolina.

Notes for ISAAC CARTER:

Isaac Carter was born in Colleton District, S.C,, 1790, son of George

Carter (Vol, III). He was married before moving to Georgia, his wife's name

was Elander (shown as "Nellie" in 1860 Census); maiden name unknown. She

was born in South Carolina about 1790. The oldest child was born in South

Carolina and the other children in Georgia.

Isaac Carter when he moved to Appling county in 1821-22, settled on

Ten-mile Creek in present Bacon county in the 5th land district. This

property was made into Pierce county when it was created in 1858, and in

more recent years into Bacon county. The home-place was on lot of land 150

in the 5th district, where Mr. Carter had a large plantation which he

cultivated with the thirtyfive slaves he is said to have owned. He was also

a large stockowner, owning 1900 head of cattle at his death.

Issac Carter died in 1854, and his son, Stephen, became the administrator

of his estate. The estate included lots of land 150 in the 5th of Appling

(at that time) and 171 in the 5th of Ware (at that time). The estate was

administered in Appling Court of Ordinary.

Mr. Carter was buried on his home-place, and the family burying ground in

due time became a community-used cemetery and Tenmile Baptist Church was

built about 500 feet away.

16. REBECCA3 CARTER (GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born 1794, and died Abt. 1879.

She married STEPHEN HUNNICUT BAXTER, son of STEPHEN BAXTER and UNKNOWN

HONEYCUT. He was born 1785, and died 1866.

Notes for STEPHEN HUNNICUT BAXTER:

Stephen Baxter was born in South Carolina about 1790, a son of Stephen

Baxter, Sr. The family removed to Tattnall County from Colleton Distret,

S.C., with George Carter (Vol. III) and others of that family connection

about 1810. Stephen Baxter, the subject, married Rebecca, the youngest

daughter of said George Carter; she was born 1794 in Colleton District, S.

C. They were married in 1815. Born to them were six children:

1. Harriet b. 1817, m. Solomon Parker, son of Wm. H. (Vol ll) Jan. 19,

1832.

2. John b. 1819, m. (unknown). Lived in Wayne Co.

3. Wiley b. 1821, m. Eliza Copeland, dau. of Jesse.

4. Stephen H. b. 1823, m. Caroline Poppell. Oct. 27, 1844.

5. Jane b. 1825, m. Solomon Parker, 1842.

6. Henry H. b. 1828, m. Nancy-----

After living some years in Tattnall County, Stephen Baxter and family moved

to Liberty County where he settled near Jones Creek Baptist Church, and he

died there in 1866. He and his wife were buried at Jones Creek Church.

Child of REBECCA CARTER and STEPHEN BAXTER is:

i. STEPHEN HUNNICUT4 BAXTER, JR, b. July 27, 1823; d. 1904.

Notes for STEPHEN HUNNICUT BAXTER, JR:

Stephen Hunnicut Baxter, Jr. was born on July 27, 1823 on the Little

Canoochee River in Tattnall (now Evans) County, Georgia. He was a son of

Stephen H. Baxter, Sr. (1785-1865) and Rebecca (Carter) Baxter (1795-1879)

(Vol. IV). He was married on October 27, 1844 in Tattnall County to

Caroline Poppell, born on April 30, 1825, in Liberty County, a daughter of

Robert Poppell. (1794-ca 1856/58) and Susan (Stanfield) Poppell. (b. 1805).

They were married by Rev. Seth Knight.

Stephen and Caroline had the following children, all born in Liberty

County.

S. H. Baxter was comniissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Georgia Militia

for the 16th District of Liberty County on March 3, 1861, by Governor

Joseph E. Brown.

The son, John H. Baxter, was at one time Sheriff of Liberty County.

Stephen H. Baxter died at his home in Liberty County (now Long) on June

30,1904. Caroline (Poppell) Baxter died on January 7, 1906 at the home of

her son, J. M. Baxter, in Long County. They are both buried in the Pigot

Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Long County.
