As Florida opened for settlement about 1820 many Liberty County families sought new home sites there.  Shortly after their marriage, John H. and Nancy Delk Baxter moved to Gadsden County, Florida.  Repeated difficulty with the Seminole Indians caused John H. Baxter to move his family back to Liberty County, Georgia in 1835.  He acquired land in the 17th G. M. District, three and one half miles south of Taylors Creek Village  near the mouth of Big Horse Creek and there built his home. By 1850, he had accumulated a small plantation of approximately 1,850 acres of land, and had become an influential individual in the area.  he continued to live there until his death in July 1873.  His estate was administered by Edward Payson Miller, Executor.  The Children of John H.
