Sheila's Grandmother, Grace Louise
Stead is restraining Jacklyn Louise Crowder. Jackie must be about 4 years old in this picture. Roscoe Conklin Scruggs is holding Sheila Melba Crowder, age 18 months. Since the date on the back of the picture is printed as August 1938, Roscoe is 50. His wife, Grace is 55. This picture was taken about 5 years before her death caused by a tumor in the stomach. The setting in the picture is close to trees that grew in abundance on Marine View Drive in Tacoma, WA. Jackie and Sheila lived next door to Grandma and Grandpa. There was a dense wooded, hill right behind our houses. Grandma grew beautiful flowers in front of her house. Sometimes in the Spring of the year artesian springs would appear flooding the front yard. This was clear fresh water for all the flowers.
Roscoe and Grace were married by a county judge in Kimble, NE 16 Oct. 1914. It was the first marriage for Roscoe but the second marriage for Grace. She had married Harvey Earl Thompson first. Grace and Harvey had one son, Harold Thompson born 18 Aug. 1904 in Denver, CO. Roscoe and Grace lived in Denver at 2108 S. Logan St. While living in Colorado, Roscoe had several jobs, one of which was a motorman for the CherryLynn Trolley. This trolley was famous because while it was horse powered, the horse would pull the trolley up the hill in Englewood, CO. (CherryLynn area). The conductor would turn the trolley, then mount the horse on the back platform of the trolley. The horse would then ride back down the hill. This trolley is now displayed at the new City Hall of Englewood, CO with a replica of the horse on the back of the trolley. Roscoe drove the trolley after it was converted to a motordriven vehicle.
