NOTE for #s 4-5 and the ancestors of #4: The identity of the parents of #2 (Robert Phillips Corker, Sr.) is mostly deduced rather than derived directly from the documents available. I have not been able to find #2 in the 1930 census, at least as a Corker (if anyone can find him there please let me know). We do know that the Christian name of #5 was Ruth (from the article linked under #1, indicating that #1’s two grandmothers were Katie Hutto and Ruth Corker); she is certainly the Ruth Corker in the SSDI whose last residence was Signal Mountain, TN (see above) and who was born 11 Jan 1907.
From his WWII enlistment we know that Robert Phillips Corker, Sr., was born in 1925 in SC. He and his wife’s family were located in Orangeburg Co., SC, so the logical place to start looking for his origin is there. In the 1930 census there was a Robert P. Phillips, age 4 6/12, living in Springfield, Orangeburg Co., SC (see above). He was living with his Phillips grandparents; neither his father nor his mother was in the household.
The only Corker in the SC death index (1821-1955) who died in Orangeburg Co. is S. A. Corker (see above under #4). On his death certificate his wife is named as Ruth Phillips. In the 1920 census, we find that the Phillips couple whose grandson Robert P. was living with them in 1930 had a daughter named Ruth, of the right age to be #5.
This collection of facts suggests strongly that #2 was that grandson (thus explaining the “Phillips” middle name as well). The main problem is that in the 1930 census, when we would expect the putative #4 (S. A. Corker) to be married to #5, he is in his mother’s household and listed as single (see above).
There are a couple of scenarios that could explain the facts noted:
(1) #2 was the (perhaps illegitimate) son of #5 by an unknown father, who adopted the Corker name after his mother’s marriage to S. A. Corker (between the 1930 census and the death of Corker in 1940). Perhaps #5 (Ruth Phillips) was married to someone else at the time of the 1930 census, which is why she cannot be located either as a Phillips or a Corker.
(2) #2 was indeed the son of S. A. Corker and Ruth Phillips, but due to some combination of events his family unit was apparently not intact at census-taking time in 1930 (parental separation, the father marked present and single in his mother’s household though actually in absentia and married, etc.).
I find the first scenario the more likely, but since no other candidate for #4 is currently known I have listed S. A. Corker and his ancestors as #s 4, 8-9, etc., with the caution noted here.
