[Carl Wilhelm Schlegel, Schlegel’s American Families of German Ancestry in the United States, vol. 1 (2003), pp. 269-270: “Gustav Theodor Dreier, the progenitor of the Dreier family of Brooklyn, New York, was born in the Free City of Bremen, in 1803. His birthplace was the Dreier homestead on the ‘Schlachte,’ on the banks of the Weser river. The home had been in possession of the family for over three generations. For over four hundred years the family had lived in Bremen….The family records have been kept with care and accuracy by the Senate of Bremen, for since the beginning of the seventeenth century Sarah Dreier had established a family fund, ‘the Dreier Stiftung,’ for which the Bremen Senate was appointed trustee; in fact, John Caspar Dreier was Schottherr of Bremen in the first half of that century, a position given only to members of old patriarchal families….The ‘hungry forties,’ followed by the Democratic upheavals in 1848, caused financial difficulties in the firm of Gustav Theodor Dreier, a wholesale linen house. This…business was interrupted by the revolution of 1848, which forced the firm of Gustav Theodor Dreier to suspend, and this incident in his career induced…his second son, Charles William Dreier, who for many years was a mariner and followed a seafaring life, to emigrate to America….He died at the homestead in which he was born, in 1872. Married, in 1827, Henriette Schacht, daughter of one of the foremost families of Bremen…”]
