[bio of half brother Joel W. Shackelford on pp. 397-399 of vol. 1 of William N. Byers’ Encyclopedia of Biography of Colorado (Chicago, 1901): “The father of the subject of this sketch, James Madison Shackelford, born in 1812, was numbered among the most eminent lawyers of Kentucky.  He was a warm personal friend of Abraham Lincoln....In 1846 he married Miss Melissa Walker....The emigrant Shackelford came to Virginia in 1640....At the Richmond, Kentucky, home the family consisted of three sons: George T. Shackelford, colonel of the Sixth Kentucky Volunteers, Federal Infantry, in the Civil War....His grandfather, George Shackelford, was a lieutenant of artillery in a company raised in Virginia when it was expected there would be a war with France in 1790.  Afterward he was a large planter and slaveholder in Kentucky, and in 1840 commanded a company that came through this western country to Santa Fe, Mexico.  He came to Kentucky from Virginia in 1800.  In that year he married Martha, the daughter of Maj. Edmund Hockaday, who had served in the war of the Revolution in the Virginia Militia.  Col. Lyne Shackelford, the great-grandfather of our subject, was a member of the Committee of Safety of King and Queen county, Virginia, and was in command of a company of American soldiers at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781.  His wife was Elizabeth Taliaferro, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel William Taliaferro of the Fourth Virginia Continental Line.  John Taliaferro was the grandfather of Lieutenant-Colonel William Talieferro and was a lieutenant of the Virginia Rangers, a company organized in 1700 for defense against the Indians.  His wife, Sarah, was a daughter of Major Lawrence Smith....”]
