until the war commenced. He went to New
York City in the fall of 1861 and clerked in a hardware store until 1865;
enlisted in the Eighty-fourth N. G. S. N. Y.; went through a short campaign in
the Shenandoah Valley; was made color-sergeant and returned in time to assist
in quelling the riot in New York City.
Their time having expired (it was a ninety-day regiment), was
discharged, and he at once enlisted in the navy, and was sent to the receiving
station, at
