The Baths of Alltyferin

Contents Page                              The Madge Family of Bideford, Devon and Swansea.                          Henry Bath and Son

By Jo Anne Chellew Gaddy

The Madge family are featured in Joanna Greenlaw's "Copper Barques and Cape Horners" as prominent ship owners and sailors. However, their origins appear to have been in Bideford, Devon. What follows is what has been ascertained regarding the family of Susan Madge, who married Henry Bath of Longlands at Swansea 19 Mar. 1821, so becoming the matriarch of the Baths of Alltyferin.

The "Calstock" captained by John Lewis was accompanied on her fatal voyage by the ship "Webster", which suffered the same fate. The "Webster" was captained by Charles Madge, perhaps the same as listed below.

The Madge, Paddy, Bath, Christoe and Lewis families often appear as part owners of Swansea ships, as well as being connected through marriage.

Jo Anne Chellew Gaddy notes:

William Lowther:-From a posting to the Mariners-L in 2002 by Ron Ley of Swansea:

"In 1838, Captain and part owner of The DEVONSHIRE. Other shareholders were from Swansea & North Devon. Built in 1813 by Henry Tucker at Bideford. A brigantine of 130 tons, 69`x 21`x 13` and registered at Swansea from 1825. The DEVONSHIRE traded between Swansea, Ireland and North Devon , mainly in the coal trade. Lowther street in Briton Ferry which was named after him."

John PADDON,

A medical doctor from Cornwall, Isabella Lowther was his second wife. Although they originally settled in Truro they had relocated to Swansea by 1858. In 1881 his occupation is "J.P.Glamn M.B.London" What does M.B. stand for? He was also co-executor of a Will~
1876 STERRY Alfred Effects under 45,000 pounds 23 October. The Will of Alfred Sterry late of Dan y Coed near Swansea in the County of Glamorgan Colliery Proprietor who died 31 July 1876 at Eastfield in the Parish of Hanley Castle in the County of Worcester was proved at the Principal Registry by Alice Rosine Sterry of Dan y Coed Widow the Relict (during Widowhood) Henry Crawshay of Oaklands
Park in the County of Gloucester Esquire and John Paddon of the Laurels Swansea Bachelor of Medicine the Executors.

Henry Joseph Madge:

Note the corrected birth year (I originally had 1811) which narrows the gap between him and the last child born in Bideford. I am more convinced that he is the Henry James that Joanna Greenlaw mentions in her book. I cannot find a Henry James listed in any of the Censuses or directories. I have also noticed that he was the owner of the Serena when it went down in 1893. This barque had originally been owned by the Baths.
