1. James Charles was born
about 1732 in Essex County, Virginia.  He died before
May 1781 in Surry County, North Carolina.

James married Sarah Halbert, daughter of Joel Halbert
and Mary Biswell Cook.  She was born abt 1734 in Essex County, Virginia.
  She died after 1796 in Greenville County, South Carolina.

2    M     i.	Oliver Charles was born about 1762 in Essex County, Virginia.
	Oliver married Elizabeth Heath on 14 May 1788 in Surry County, North Carolina.
	Elizabeth was born about 1762.
3     F    ii.	Mary Charles was born about 1764.  She died 1803 in Greenville County, South Carolina.
	Mary Charles married Phillip Evans 1782 in Surry County, North Carolina.  Phillip was born
	17 Jun 1759 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  He died 19 June 1849 in Anderson County,
	South Carolina.
4    M    iii.	Joel Charles  was born about 1768.   He died 9 Jun 1843 in Orange County, Indiana.
	Joel married Mary Blackburn.   Mary was born about 1754 in Essex County, Virginia.
5    F    iv.	Frances Charles was born before 1770.  She died before 1820 in Greenville County,
	South Carolina.
	Frances married William Obediah Wood on 7 Sep 1785 in Surry County, North Carolina.
	Obediah was born in 1753.  He died 30 May 1849 in Jefferson County, Alabama.  He is
	buried at Wood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.
6    F    v.	Martha Charles was born about 1772.
7    F   vi.	Nancy Charles was born 17 May 1773 in Surry County, North Carolina.  She died on
	21 Aug 1858 in Tennessee.
8    F   vii.	Sarah Charles was born about 1774 in Surry County, North Carolina.
9    M  viii.	Israel Charles was born about 1776 in Surry County, North Carolina.  He died about
	1803 in Greenville County, South Carolina.
10    M    ix.	John Charles was born about 4 Oct 1777 in Greenville County, South Carolina.  He died
	died on 14 Oct 1848 in Greenville County, South Carolina. He is buried in the Charles Family
	Cemetery in Greenville County, South Carolina.
	John married Elizabeth Garrison on 14 Oct 1804 in Greenville County, South Carolina.  Elizabeth
	was born on 29 July 1787.  She died on 28 Apr 1852 in Greenville County, South Carolina.
	She is buried at the Charles Family Cemetery in Greenville County, South Carolina.
11    F     x.	Zilpha Charles was born about 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina.

Second Generation

2. Oliver Charles, son of James Charles and Sarah Halbert,
was born about 1762 in Essex County, Virginia.

Oliver married Elizabeth Heath on 14 May 1788 in Surry County,
North Carolina.  Elizabeth was born about 1762.

12    M     i.	Richard J. Charles was born on 15 Jun 1787 in South Carolina.  He died on 5 Oct 1841
	in Hillsboro, Coffee County, Tennessee at age 54.
	Richard married Martha Beyford on 21 May 1810 in Jackson County, Georgia.  Martha
	was born 9 Sep 1789.  She died after 1850.
13    M    ii.	John Charles was born 22 Mar 1795 in Darlington County, South Carolina.  He died on
	9 June 1877 in Hillsboro, Coffee County, Tennessee at age 82.  He is buried at Henry's
	Cove Cemetery in Hillsboro, Tennessee.
	John married Bersheba Babb.  Bersheba was born on 10 Nov 1791 in Tennessee.  She
	died on 23 Dec 1858 in Coffee County, Tennessee.  She is buried at Henry's Cove
	Cemetery in Hillsboro, Tennessee.
	John next married Jane Burrows on 8 Aug 1859 in Grundy County, Tennessee.  Jane was
	born 28 Jun 1804 in Tennessee.  She died on 15 Jan 1864 in Hillsboro, Coffee County,
	Tennessee.  She is buried at Henry's Cove Cemetery in Coffee County, Tennessee.
	John next married Caroline Hill on 18 Sep 1864 in Hillsboro, Coffee County, Tennessee.
	Caroline was born about 1825.  She died on 22 July 1892 in Coffee County, Tennessee.
14    M   iii.	William Charles was born about 1798 in South Carolina.  He died on 18 June 1867 in
	Hillsboro, Coffee County, Tennessee about age 69.  He is buried in Henry's Cove Cemetery
	in Hillsboro, Tennessee.
	William married Anna Henry, daughter of Samuel Henry and Sarah Robinson.
15    M   iv.	Melchizadeck Charles was born in 1800 in South Carolina.  He died 13 Apr 1880 in Jackson
	County, Georgia at age 80.
16    M     v.	Solomon Charles was born about 1804.

Third Generation

15. Melchizadeck Charles was born in 1880 in South Carolina.
Melchizadeck Charles was a Methodist Episcopal Preacher in Gilmer County, Georgia.
He was accused of Simple Larceny and on March 29, 1840 he was sentenced to 1 year imprisonment.
He was pardoned on May 22, 1840.  By 1860, Melchizadeck Charles had left
Gilmer County, and relocated his family to Jackson County, Georgia
where he lived the remainder of his life.

Melchizadeck married Mary Jay, the daughter of Reverend David Jay, Sr. and
Elizabeth Earp.  Mary was born in 1800 in North Carolina.  She died
after 1880 in Jackson County, Georgia.

Children from this marriage were:

17    M     i.	Jesse Charles was born on 8 Sep 1815 in Warren County, Tennessee.  He died on 21 Jan 1903
	in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia at age 87.  He was buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church
	in Gilmer County, Georgia.
	Jesse married Susannah L. Bramlett on 30 Jun 1839 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.  Susannah
	was born on 17 May 1822.  She died 24 Jun 1901 at age 79.  She was buried at Pleasant Grove
	Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.
18    M    ii.	James D. Charles was born about 1819 in Warren County, Tennessee.  He died 10 Jun 1856 in
	Gilmer County, Georgia.
19    F    iii.	Zilphia Charles was born about 1823 in Georgia.  She died about 1865.
	Zilpha married married Robert Bryant on 18 Jan 1845 in Gilmer County, Georgia.  Robert was born
	about 1824 in South Carolina.  He died about 1865.
20    M    iv.	William Charles was born about 1831 in Habersham County, Georgia.
21    F     v.	Sarah Jane Charles was born about 1837 in Gilmer County, Georgia.  She died before 1870 in
	Gilmer or Jackson County, Georgia.
	Sarah Jane married Joseph A. Bryant on 26 June 1851 in Gilmer County, Georgia.  Joseph was
	born about 1828 in Georgia.  He died before 1900 in Georgia.
22    M   vi.	John W. Charles was born about 1837 in Gilmer County, Georgia.
	John married Mary Jane Bramlett on 31 Oct 1858 in Jackson County, Georgia.  Mary Jane was
	born about 1838 in Gilmer County, Georgia.

Fourth Generation

20.   William Charles I was a Methodist Preacher in Gilmer County, Georgia.
He was said to have disappeared after his church was burnt down. 
No other information is known about William.

William married Sarah Ray, daughter of Robert Ray and Mary Bramlett, on
18 Aug 1850 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.  Sarah was born on 2 Mar 1822
in Habersham County, Georgia.  She died on 19 Sep 1910 in Ellijay,
Gilmer County, Georgia. at age 88.  She was buried at
Talona Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.

The only child from this marriage was:

23    M     i.	William H. Charles was born on 30 Oct 1851 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.  He died
	on 19 Feb 1930 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia at age 78.  He is buried at Talona
	Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.

Fifth Generation

Georgia.  He died on 19 Feb 1930 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia at age 78. 
He is buried at Talona Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia. 

William married Celia Maude Bowman, daughter of Cornelius Bowman and Mary Ann
Nesbit, on 18 Apr 1887 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.  Celia was born
on 16 Jul 1867 in Georgia.  She died on 2 Mar 1963 in Canton, Cherokee
County, Georgia at age 95.  She is buried at Talona Baptist
Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.

Children from this marriage were:

24    M     i.	Sarah Elizabeth Charles was born on 12 Jan 1888 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.  She
	died on 6 Feb 1967 in Gilmer County, Georgia at age 79.  She was buried at Talona
	Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.
	Elizabeth married Edward Barnes on 25 Dec 1910 in Gilmer County, Georgia.  Edward
	was born on 26 Apr 1870.  He died on 22 Jun 1928 in Gilmer County, Georgia at age 58.
	He is buried at Talona Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.
25    F    ii.	Mary Fanny Magdalene Charles was born on 28 Oct 1893 in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia.
	She died on 23 May 1986 in Gilmer County, Georgia at age 92.  She is buried at Keeter
	Cemetery in Gilmer County, Georgia.

Sixth Generation

25. Mary Fanny Magdalene Charles was born on 28 Oct 1893 in Ellijay, Gilmer 
County, Georgia.  She died on 23 May 1986 in Gilmer County, Georgia
 at age 92.  She was buried at Keeter Cemetery in
Gilmer County, Georgia.

Mary married Benjamin Harrison Burnette, son of
John Ellis Burnett and Mary Louiza Weaver, on 5 Dec 1909 in Gilmer
County, Georgia.  He died on 14 Aug 1925 in Gilmer County, Georgia at age 36.
He is buried at Talona Baptist Church in Gilmer County, Georgia.
The cause of his death was Tuberculosis.


Mary next married Hill Alexander Stroup on 2 Aug 1930 in Gilmer County, Georgia.
Hill was born on 1 Oct 1875.  He died on 13 July 1936
in Fulton County, Georgia.
