18 Nov 1771 - Mary Catherine Broyle, Adam Broile, Matthias and Eva Broile sell 166 acres on the Robinson River to John Glassell. {5JKB103} CulpeperCo., Va. This land is probably some of their inheritance.

15 Feb 1773 - Mathias Broile buys 235 acres from Adam and Mary Broile.{2JKB83} Culpeper Co., Va.

20 Mar 1775 - Mathis Broyle, John Broyle and wife Margaret, Adam Broyle and wife Mary Catherine Broyle sell 70 acres to John Glassell of CulpeperCo. {6JKB105} This appears to be sale of more of their inheritance.

18 Sep 1775 - Estate of Rev. George Samuel Klug mentions son-in-law Matthias Broile. Matthias receives 1/9 of 2/3 of the estate because he "intermarried with the daughters of the dec'd." {Culpeper Co., Va. WillBooks B&C}

10 Jun 1801 - Michael Broyles and wife Elizabeth, Matthias Broyles and wife Eve, all of Greene Co., Tenn., said Elizabeth and Eve Klug (sic) being heirs of Susanna Medley, formerly Susanna Klug, dec'd, appoint William Lotspeeck of Stafford Co., Va. as attorney. {5JKB119}

- Matthias moves to Harrison Co., Ind. He is certainly one of the firstBroyles to make that move, along with his nephew Tobias.

1812 - Matthias is not on the Greene Co. tax list. {Curtis}

1818 - Matthias is killed by lightning on a return trip from Indiana.

Mar 1818 - Mathias Broyles, administrator, presents the estate of Mathias Broils, Sen.

Mar 1818 - Jacob Fox paid the estate of Matthias $50. Jacob Hoover paid $75. {6JKB106}

- The estate was taken to Rutherford Co., Tenn. where Mathias Jr. was living.

"Conrad Breyel, citizen and farmer of this place, who fell down from atop a crabapple tree and broke his back, yet lived 5 days, his age 51 years less 8 weeks."

This interpretation is not clear cut, with some translators preferring"who fell down over a crabapple tree". This version does not make sense in that it is hard to break one's back by tripping over a tree.

Dear Bertie:

We received your dear letter Jan. 31st and was glad to hear from you.
Also surprised to hear of Dodson's and Ovella's expecting heir.

I will write what I can remember of Grandfather's Family. Theirnames--Matthias Broyles and Barbara Broyles, died of thyphoid in 1863.They nursed some soldiers who got well, but both took it and died andwere buried in same grave. Grandfather didn't have a decayed tooth inhis mouth at his death. Grandmother was very religious, read a lot andprayed in public when called on. They had 11 eleven children. The twooldest sons were Methodists preachers and one son was a doctor. Sixoldest went west. Uncles Ira, Amos, and Nathan--he was the doctor. AuntPolly Ann Stockton, Aunt Jane Hill and Aunt Emmaline Stockton. AuntPolly Ann's oldest son, John, was the age of my father and were broughtup together till they all went west. The doctor settled in Mo. Theother five lived in Tenn.

Ephraim Broyles [Parents] was born on Jun 3 1767 in Culpeper, Va. He died on Sep 3 1851 in Greene Co, Tenn. He married Grace McCain in 1788 in Greene Co, Tennessee.

Ephraim lived on Horse Creek in Greene Co., TN. He was a devout Methodist and classreader, and left a reputation as a very kind-hearted man. Some small proof of this are the seven Greene Co. marriages where he signed as security. Ephraim is also said to have had a withered hand. [1]

Ephraim's wife Grace was the sister of Mary McCain. Mary was the wife of Lewis Broyles.

May 1796 - Ephraim was named to a road committee in Greene Co., Tenn. [12]:233

18 Dec 1811 - Grant 1994, State of Tennessee, to Ephraim Broyles, 10 acres on south side of the Nolachucky River on Higgins Branch, adjoining Thomas Prather and Philip Bird. Based on Entry No. 377,

21 Dec 1809 - founded on Warrant No. 2411 issued by John Carter to Henry McKenney for 100 acres, 10

Jan 1795 - assigned by McKenney to Jacob Bird, and by Bird 10 acres to Ephraim Broyles. [87]:238
1812 - Ephraim is on the tax list of Greene Co., TN. He is taxed for 190 acres. [47]

1850 - He and his wife Grace are listed in the Greene Co., TN, census. Grace's birthplace is given as "unknown." They appear to be quite poor, in that their property value is only $100.

6 Oct 1851 - Ephraim's will is probated. The will had been written 19 Mar 1828. The will names his four children and wife Grace. Grace inherits the house and the interest on $500. The children are to divide the estate equally on her death. [10]:73
