In looking at my previous analysis of the possible name of Reuben's father. I thought he might be "William" due to all the Williams in the families. Now I'm not so sure, because normally the first son was named after father. That would make Reuben's father "John" if we only look at Reuben's children; and his mother would be "Mary." The other sibs of Reuben named their first children differently, though. But they all had a William. Too many people swallowed that hook line and sinker, and now every Barrett researcher is naming William as Reuben's father.
"Working Hypothesis" follows:
WORKING HYPOTHESIS: BARRETT GROUP SHEET Karen Hett, Jan. 1987 ( updated: 1992)
(WILLIAM OR JOSEPH or JOHN???) BARRETT AND WIFE UNKNOWN So far, no evidence has been found of the above couple. The family is supposed to have come to S. C. from Virginia. First evidence on our Barretts being in S. C. is in 1777 in Spartanburg Dist. Did they come through N. C. as did most of their neighbors? If so, we have not found them!
Possible children of the above parents:
1. John Barrett
2. Joseph Barrett
3. Reuben Barrett
4. Nancy Barrett
5. Arthur Barrett
1. JOHN BARRETT born ca. 1750?
I think he was the oldest of those we have data on. He was over 45 in the 1800 census of Greenville. He appears there in both 1790 and 1800. By 1800 he had a number of children, mostly girls.
If this John served in the Revolution, he did not do so in S. C. He may have served earlier in the War in Virginia or N. C.
John purchased 65 acres from Jordan Holcombe on Gap Creek of Saluda R. in 1793; he purchased 100 acres on branches of Bea- ver Dam Creek (Mary Cooper's Survey, Deed Bk. F p. 25) in 1799 and sold the same in 1802 (Bk. F p. 509)
1803, a John Barrett, probably this one, purchased 199 1/2 acres from Edward Stringer; on Waters of Tyger R. No sale of this land has been found.
1804, Jan; from minutes of Tyger River Baptist Church, John Barrett and daughters Nancy and Betsy give reports concerning accusations against church members.
1810, Mr. Franke quotes a census listing for a John Barrett over 45 in Greenville, but I have not found such a listing.
Possible marriage date: 1770 to 1780. Note that in 1790 John has 5 children, so I would think the first one would have been born about 1780.
John is said to be enumerated in later years in Pendelton. I have not researched these records.
Known children of John Barrett
1. Nancy (Ann) Barrett, mentioned in church record 1804
2. Betsy (Elizabeth) Barrett, ditto
3. James T. Barrett ??? This man married Nancy Doughty, dau. of Joseph Doughty, and may or may not be a son of this John Barrett; they are found later with our Barretts in Tuscaloosa Co., Ala.
2. JOSEPH BARRETT b. ca. 1750 - 1757?
Married: Elizabeth Venable, dau. of James Venable, Septem- ber, 1778. (6/92: new info from Ellen V. Poteet to the effect that father of Elizabeth was "Joseph")
This Joseph Barrett, according to Lois O'Kelly's book, wit- nessed a deed in Spartanburg Dist. in 1778; the land was in Caswell Co. N. C., and was purchased by Geo. Roebuck, Jr. from Thomas Barton. No page and Vol. are given.
Joseph served in Roebuck's regiment before and after the fall of Charleston and was killed by Tories after the battle of Cowpens in 1781. (National Archives #BLWT 9109-160-55; Audi- ted Accounts, S. C. Archives, #318; "Columbia State" Jan 4 1904 - February 1905.)
It is apparently from the above that Albert Franke got the information that Joseph married Elizabeth Venable; Albert gives the pension application # 238.613, Mar. 17 1856.
Known children of Joseph Barrett (he is the only child)
1. William Barrett; died in 1810, Warren Co. Ky.
3. REUBEN BARRETT, b. ca. 1755? MARRIED: HANNAH (possibly DOUGHTY; not proven)
Reuben fought in the S. C. militia under Benjamin Roebuck, while residing in Spartanburg Dist. in 1780-1781. He re- ceived a number of land grants in Greenville Dist., and there he raised his large family. Hannah died in about 1811 and Reuben married about a year before his death, Thompson Prince, sister of his son-in-law. He died in March in 1814.
