Edmond Daniel Thomas Wooldridge

Edmond Daniel Thomas Wooldridge was the son of Samuel Dunbar Wooldridge and Catherine McCan. He was born at Danville, Montgomery County, Texas, on May 31, 1854.

At the time of the Civil War, Ed was just a boy. However, he stated in an application for pension in his later life that he was a member of the Danville Mounted Riflemen, a local militia unit of which his father was captain. He also claimed to have carried the mail for the Confederacy during this time.

It is very possible that Ed participated in the drills and other activities of the Danville Mounted Riflemen, as there were boys as young as fourteen who were on the rolls of the company. However, Ed’s name is not among them. In protest upon being turned down for a pension, Ed wrote the following in 1925: “I see no reason why my application could not be acted on favorably. Of course I was young but tall and use [sic] to horseback riding and I feel I did a soldier’s part...”

Ed was married to Nellie Waters, on August 5, 1879. They were divorced in 1885 after having one daughter. On June 7, 1887, he married Kate Cook of Alabama and brought her to live in Texas. The couple owned a hotel in Corrigan, Texas, then moved to Willis, Montgomery County, where they operated the Willis Hotel and raised their four children.

Ed died in Conroe on October 20, 1926, and Kate died April 28, 1940. They are buried in the Willis City Cemetery.
