JOHN S. HULON

John Hulon was born in Montgomery County, Texas, in 1845, the son of William Henry Hulon and Phoebe Reese Spillers.

He was the brother of James William Hulon.

John was entered as John Wesley in the 1850 census enumeration and as John W. in 1860. However, by 1870, his name was entered as John S. Hulon. He was still living with his parents in that year.

John was only sixteen when the Danville Mounted Riflemen was formed in his county under Captain S. D. Wooldridge

The Riflemen was a company of cavalry that was part of the Seventeenth Brigade, Texas State Troops. John was too young to join the Confederate forces, but he was not too young to join the militia. Even though his name does not appear on one of the two extant muster rolls, in later years he filed a deposition supporting the pension application of J. P. Childers, stating that he had been a member of the Riflemen with Childers. This is entirely possible, as there were boys as young as fourteen who served in the militia at the local level; there was nothing in the militia law specifying age of recruits.

There is no record of John joining a C. S. A. unit, even though he would have turned eighteen before the end of the war.

In 1870, John S. Hulon was still living with his parents in Montgomery County. He was employed, probably by his father, as a farm laborer. On March 31, 1874, he married Sallie M. Williamson.

He was living in Precinct One of Montgomery County in 1880 with his wife and three children. His mother Phoebe was also living with him.

Information was compiled from county and census records, from Hulon family records, and from pension records in the Texas State Archives.
