JOHN D. GRISSET

The National Archives has a file for a J. D. Grisset who served with the Eighth Regiment Texas Cavalry (Terry's Rangers), Company K, under Captain Christian. He was enlisted by J. W. S. Parks, Regiment of Infantry at Houston, Texas, on the 7th day of September, 1861. His records show that he was born in Alabama and was forty-one years of age, thus indicating a birth year of 1820. He stood five feet eight inches high, had a fair complexion, light eyes, dark hair, and was occupied as a farmer at the time of his enlistment.
While stationed at Corinth, Mississippi, on April 16, 1862, he was found to be incapable of performing the duties of a soldier; his disability was the result of an inguinal hernia, which rendered him “permanently unfit to perform the duties of a soldier.” The discharge was signed by T. J. Potts, Surgeon, on 17th April 1862.
If John transferred from the Eighth Regiment to the Twenty-Fourth, it must have been near the end of the war, and the records have been lost.
It seems probable that this is the John D. Grisset who was married to Susan Isabella Travis, daughter of William Barret Travis of Alamo fame.
John and Susan made their home at Chappell Hill, Texas. The Grissets are said to have been the center of social life in that area. They had two children, William Barret Grisset (b. 4-28-1846) and Mary Jane Grisset (b. 12-29-1848). The boy died at age nine. Mary Jane Grisset married Thomas Green Davidson, an attorney who held the rank of Captain in the Confederate Army.
I have no information on John's death, but Susan Isabella Travis Grisset is said to be buried next to her brother, Charles Edward Travis, in a cemetery at Chappell Hill, Washington County, Texas.

The National Archives Compiled Service Records for Company B, Twenty-Fourth Texas Cavalry shows only one muster roll entry for a John D. Grisset. This file shows John being paroled by the Provost Marshal at the Post of Brenham at the close of the war, and he was entered into the record in August 1865. The entry shows that he was a resident of Washington County.
