Edgefield County Deeds

There are several deeds recorded in Edgefield County that are of interest. At the time, Edgefield was adjacent to Newberry County on the opposite (south) side of the Saluda River, extending to its present western boundary, the Savannah River.

Bk-8 181 26 Nov 1792. Anthony Argo and Mary, his wife, of Edgefield County, SC to Pleasant Burnett of same place, for £10, 105 acres being part of 325 acres originally granted 03 July 1786 unto Argo, being on the fork of Little Saluda and Big Creek. Said 325 acres divided into several parts and previously sold except for this last 105 acres, the last of the original tract. Adjacent: Cuzeck, NE by James Barrot and John Wright; NE and S by Aaron Etheredge. Signed: Anthony Argo, Mary Argo (her mark). Witness: John (X) Colton, Hezekiah (X) Burnett, 14 Jan 1793, before Henry King, J. P. Recorded 03 Jan 1793.

Bk-08 367 30 Dec 1790. Rufus Inman, blacksmith, to Joseph Culbreath. 102 acres on Saluda River for £40.

Bk-10 104 13 July 1785. Thomas Norrell to Rufus Inman, blacksmith. 61 acres on a branch of Halfway Swamp. [This is a tributary of the Saluda.]

Bk-14 358 04 Sept 1793. William Taylor to Rufus Inman, blacksmith. 150 acres on Halfway Swamp Creek adjacent to Rufus Inman.

Bk-19 10 02 Sept 1800. Sheriff’s sale of 61 acres belonging to Rufus Inman on Halfway Swamp in satisfaction of a court judgement by Jones Wills.

Bk-12 335 09 Oct 1795. James Monday to Richard Barrett, Sr., both of Edgefield County, SC, for £50, 132 acres surveyed 30 Sept 1794 by Shadrack Stokes on Bumefield Creek of Savannah River. Adjacent: Reuben Monday, George Hogwood, James Hogwood. Said tract originally granted to Henry Ware, Esq., of GA, 31 Aug 1774, and was conveyed 1794 to said James Monday. Witness: Phil May, Sr., Phill May, Jr., sworn 10 Oct 1795 before John Ryan, J. P. Recorded 10 Oct 1795.

Book C, pp. 764-768 James Barrett to James Barrett, blacksmith March 21 & 22, 1791 State of South Carolina. Newberry County. Ninety Six District // This indenture made this Twenty first day of March in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and Ninety One and in the fifteenth year of the Sovereignty and Independancy of the United States of America Between James Barret of the One part and James Barret Smith of the other part both of the State County and District above mentioned Witnesseth that the said James Barret for and in consideration of the sum of Ten Shillings Sterling lawfull Money of State of South Carolina to him in hand well and Truly paid by the said James Barret Smith at and before the Sealing and Delivering these Presents the Right whereof the said James Barrett doth hereby acknowledge that he hath Bargined and Sold and by these presents doth Bargin and Sell unto James Barrett Smith all that Plantation or Tract of Land Containing One hundred and thirty five acres and a half more or less being and lying in the State County and District aforesaid and surveyed the 20th of April Anno Dom: One thousand Seven hundred and Eighty Seven for Nathaniel Haywood Situate on the Waters of Saluda River and hath such Shape form and Marks as appears by a Platt thereof Reference being threreunto as may more fully appear Together with all and Singular The Houses Out Houses Edifices Buildings Barns Stables Yard Gardens Orchard Woods under Woods Timber and Timber Trees Meadows & Pastures Ponds lakes fishing ways water courses and paths passages Liberties privileges Profits hereditaments Rights members and appurtenances whatsoever those unto belonging or in anywise appertaining and the Revision and Revising Remainder & remainders Rents Issues and profits thereof and of every Part and Parcel thereof To have and to hold the said plantation or Tract containing of One hundred and thirty five acres and a half of land be the same more or less as aforesaid with every the premises and appurtenances as thereunto belonging unto the said James Barret Smith his heirs Executors admrs. And assigns from the day next before the day of the date of these Presents for and during and until the fullness and Time of One Whole Year from the Next Ensuring and fully to be Compleat (sic) Ended Yielded and paying therefore unto to said James Barret the rent of One pepper corn if the same shall be lawfully demanded. State of South Carolina. Newberry County. Ninety Six District // This Indenture made this Twenty Second day of March In the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and Ninety One and in the fifteenth year of Independence of the United States of America Between James Barret of the State County and District aforesaid of the One Part & James Barrett blacksmith of the other part of the aforesaid County State and District above mentioned. Whereas in and by a Certain Grant bearing the date the first day of December 1788 under the hand of his Excellency Thomas Pinkney Esq. Govenor (sic) and Commander in Chief in and over said State at Charleston for the time being and for that purpose Appointed did give and grant unto James Barret a Plantation or Tract of Land Containing (sic) of One hundred and thirty five acres and a half be the same more or less situate lying in the District of Ninety Six and Surveyed for Nathaniel Haywood the 20th of April 1787 on water of Saluda River bounded by Line running N.W. by Isaac Doziers land the other side by Vacant Land and hath such form and Marks as appears by a Platt thereof to said Grant annexed as in and by Said Platt and Grant duly Recorded in Secretaries Office of the Said State in Grant Book Y.Y.Y.Y. Page 179. Reference being thereunto had may more fully Appear. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that the said James Barret for and in Consideration of Twenty Pounds Sterling Money of the said State to him in hand well and Truly paid by the said James Barret Blacksmith at and before the Sealing and delivery of these Presents, the Receipt whereof he the said James Barrett doth hereby acknowledge to be well Contented Satisfied & paid Hath Granted Bargained Sold akin remise Released Conveyed Convey and Confirmed and by these Presents doth Grant Bargain Sell akin remise Convey and Confirm and release unto said James Barret Blacksmith in his actual possission now being by Virtue of a Bargain and sale to him thereof made for One Whole Year and by Force of Statute for Transferring of use to possession and to his heirs and assigns forever All the said Plantation or Tract of Land Containing One hundred and thirty five acres and a half more or less Together with all and singular the Houses outhouses Buildings Barns Stables Yards Orchards Gardens Woods under Woods Timber and Timber trees

Book D-2, pp. 355-357 William Irby to Arthur Barrett February 27, 1792 State of South Carolina. Newberry County. // This indenture made the 27th day of February, 1792: Between Wm Irby of one part and Arthur Barrett of the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Ten pounds Sterling Money to him in hand well and truly paid by the said Arthur Barrett to him the said William Irby well and truly paid at and before the signing sealing and Delivering of there presents the Receipts hereby acknowledged to be well satisfied and Contented being by virtue of a bargin and sale of twenty five acres of Land more of Less and appears by a Draught hereto annexed being part of a tract of 435 acres bearing date the 14th day October 1784, by his Excellence William Moultre Esqr. Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the State South Carolina Secretaries Office Recorded FFFF page 269. and now the said Wm Irby with Henritter (sic) his wife doth Convey by this deed all that Plantation or Tract of Land Containing Twenty five acres more or less with all and singular Rights and members of the land and tenements of the above mentioned premises to him the said Arthur Barrett and his Heirs Executors administrators and assigns against all actions, suits, lays last, charges damages Expenses that the said Arthur Barrett may suspend or be put to by any Right for title of Dower and that I the said Wm Irby doth for myself with Each of my heirs, Covenant and agree to and with the said Arthur Barrett and his heirs Executors administrators and assigns to the only use and behalf of him the said Arthur Barrett and his heirs for Ever with all the appurtinants (sic) of the land Tenements above mentioned. Book I, pp. 503-504 Arthur Barrett to Joseph Goodman June 13, 1800

State of South Carolina.// Know all men by these presents that I Arthur Barrott of the District of Edgefield and State aforesaid in consideration of the sum of ten pounds sterling money to me paid by Joseph Goodman of the District of Newberry and State aforesaid have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the within said Joseph Goodman all that piece parcel plantation or tract of Land containing twenty five acres of land more or less Ö to the boundary line of beginning in Thomas Spearman Land at the Ö and of a part of also Rashally Reminger to the Ö to Goodman Land then along by land to Brown Land and along by line to Thomas Spearman Land which he Ö then to Joseph Goodman Land in the Ö then Long by line to the beginning Ö part of a tract of five hundred and twenty five acres granted to William Irby and sold to me by the said William Irby together with all and singular the Rights members hereditainments and appurtainance unto the said Joseph Goodman his heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby bind myself my heirs Executors and administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said Joseph Goodman and his heirs and assigns against my self and my heirs and against all and every person whosoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same as any part thereof witness my hand and seal this the thirteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and in the twenty fourth year of Independence of the United States of America in presence of William Moore (signed) Arthur Barrett (seal) Thomas Butler

Book K, pp. 313-314 James Barrett to Arthur Barrett November 18, 1813

The State of South Carolina. Newberry District.// Know all even by these presents that I, James Barrett of the State and District aforesaid in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Arthur Barrett of the District aforesaid have granted and released unto the said Arthur Barrett, all that plantation or tract of Land containing seventy six acres more or less situate lying and being in the District aforesaid on a branch of Little River Water of Saluda bounded by lines running S.W. & S.E. by Robert Stewart land S.W. and N.W. by Daniel Stewart NW by Jacob Stewart from white N.E. Richard Wright So. by Reason Reagin which way more fully appear by a platt to the original grant annexed, together with all and singular the rights encumber Hereditarily and appurtenances to the said premise belonging on the any wise incidental or appertaining to have and to hold, all and singular the premise before mentioned unto the said Arthur Barrett his heirs and assigns forever, and I do hereby bind myself my heirs executors administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premise unto the said Arthur Barrett his heirs and assigns against myself and my heirs and against any person to whosoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same as any part thereof. Book K, pp. 395-396 John Stewart to Arthur Barrett September 15, 1812

The State of South Carolina. Newberry District.// Know all men by these present that I, John Stewart B.S. of the State and District aforesaid am held and firmly bound unto Arthur Barrett of the same place in the sum of one hundred dollars, well and truly to be paid unto the said Arthur Barrett, his heirs Executors or assigns in witness hereof, I have here unto set my hand and seal this 15 day of Sept. 1812. The condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound John Stewart (B.S.) do make or cause to be made unto the said Arthur Barrett or his heirs a good & sufficient right & Pette to a certain tract of land, containing fifty acres more or less being on the south side of the Charleston (Charter?) Joining land of the said Barrett & John G. Thomas ñ which right ñ is to be made on the 25th day of December 1814 to the said Arthur Barrett his heirs Exec. admrs. then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force & virtue in Law. Newberry District. // Personally appeared Josephus Thomas before me and upon being duly qualified as the law directs saith upon his oath that he was personally present & did see the within named John Stewart sign seal and deliver the within Bond to Arthur Barrett for the use & purpose within mentioned and that Elijah Long together with himself witnessed the due execution thereof sworn to and subscribed before me this 2nd April 1814. Book L, p. 238 Arthur Barrett to William W. Thomas February 17, 1813

South Carolina. Newberry District.// Know all men by these presents that I Arthur Barrett of the State and District aforesaid for and in consideration of diverse good causes me there unto noaeing, do freely give & grant unto William W. Thomas of the State & District afore, Twenty five acres of land lying and being in the District aforesaid and the same being part of the tract of land where on I now live, & where the said William W. Thomas now lives, the same to be laid off to him so as to be most convenient round the House where the said Thomas now lives & the said William W. Thomas shall not have any power to sell the said land but he shall have free privilege to live on the same during pleasure & if the said W. W. Thomas should die then I give and grant the said twenty five acres of Land to his wife & children forever & I do truly warrant and defend the said twenty five acres of Land to the said William Thomas & his wife & children forever against myself & my heirs Exec. & actions ñ signed sealed and delivered in the presence of Daniel Stewart ---- Thomas Rainey (signed) Arthur Barrett (seal) Josephus Thomas

October 1, 1818 Arthur Barrett to Daniel Stewart Book M, p. 350

The State of South Carolina // Know all men by these presents that I Arthur Barrett of Newberry district and state aforesaid in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Daniel Stewart of the state and district have granted sold and released unto the said Daniel Stewart all that plantation or tract of land containing fifty one acres more or less situate lying and being in the district of Newberry on a branch of little river a water of Saluda bounded by lines running S.W. and S.E. by John Stewartís land S.W. and N.W. by Daniel Stewartís land and N.W. by Jacob Cooperís land N.E. by Richard Wright south by Benjamin Gregoryís land which may more fully appear by a platt to the original grant annexed. Together with all and singular the right members heriditainments unto and appertaining to the said premises belonging or in anywise incident or appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said Daniel Stewart his heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby bind myself my heirs executors and administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said Daniel Stewart his heirs and assigns against myself and my heirs and against any person whosoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof. Witness my hand and seal this first day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen and in the forty third year of American independence of the united states of America also I do hereby give a quiet claim of all my possession on the said premises.
