UTLEY PICKENS BARRETT
Utley Pickens Barrett was born about 1812 in South Carolina, the son of Joseph Barrett and Emily Unknown, and grandson of Reuben Barrett. Utley married Margaret McKey on March 15, 1838 in Noxubee County, MS. In 1836 Utley built a log cabin in Neshoba County,MS. It is still standing today although it is not in the Barrett family anymore.
"Utley Pickens Barrett (wife is Margaret McKee) built a log cabin about 1836. U.P. Barrett is the oldest son of Joseph Barrett, This is recorded in the book, Red Clay Hills of Neshoba County. Although damaged some, the cabin still stands. About 1996 it was sold separately and the cabin was moved from atop it's steep hill to Hwy 16 at Edinburg,MS There is a Barrett Cemetery and a Barrett landing (river) near the original homestead site. "Another account tells us that Mr. and Mrs. Pickens Barrett moved to this county in 1836, about fifteen miles west of Philadelphia in the area known as the Barrett Community, on the hills of Pearl River, and reared a big family. They came in contact with very few other people and had no contact with the outside world. Conditions at that time were very hard because they had to make everything..for example, their own wagons, plowstocks, shoes, and clothes. The way they tanned their hides for shoes is of intrust. They used the following method.
..They went out in the river swamp and cut down a big poplar tree and dug out a big trough in it. They put the trough down in a big hole of water and filled the trough full of water and put the hides in and let them stay for sixty or ninety days, Then, when the hair would slip off, they would take the hides out and rub them across a log until they were dried out. Then, they would take a big knife and scrape the flesh side of the hide till it was clean. It was then softened by rubbing salt, ashes and eggs into it. It was then ready to make shoes. All saddles were handmade. The saddle form was cut out of the root of a tree and then covered with leather or beaver hide...Homes like the Barretts' were built of split logs hewn down with a broad axe. Barrett Home ca. 1836; "In 1836, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia, near Pearl River, a Mr. and Mrs. Pickens Barrett built a log home, of hand hewn logs and split planks. The door and window shutters were also of planks, and the chimney of rocks and mortar mud. The floor was packed dirt.
