I am attaching my computer file of the descendants of Utley Barrett. This file was compiled about 10 years ago and has been upgraded as I learned more information. Most of the information was provided by my mother who knew many of the individuals in the file. Mother will be 90 this summer and is still interested in the Barrett family tree. The reason I am sending this to you is to because we have children listed, particularly of William Lafayette Barrett, that do not appear on the web site.
If you have any questions about the authenticity of this file, please contact me.

Notes for OSCAR HARRISON BARRETT:
Libby, I have very little memory of my Pappa Barrett. He died when I was three. I do remember that he and Mamma visited us once. They came in a mule-drawn wagon. We made ice cream in a crank freezer. They lived about 7 miles away, but that was quite a trip in those days.
I have a vague memory of my mother fixing or tying Pappa Barrett's tie when he was in bed. He died of a brain tumor and was apparently bed-ridden for some time. My mother has the fondest regard for my grandfather Barrett and apparently he did for her as well.
I have the little plaster of paris mold of fruit hanging in the kitchen that he gave to me. It's a cheap little peice with no artistic value, but I would like for you to have it because it is the only thing that I have from him.

Notes for THEODOCIA "DOCIA" MCNEIL:
Libby, I doubt that Mamma Barrett finished the fourth grade, but she could read and write just fine. She was a wonderful teller of stories. I would spend the night with her and she would put me to sleep weaving fantastic stories of things that happened to people years ago. I'm not sure how much of her stories were true and how much were made up.
I remember that she let me ramble in her trunk. To this day, the odor of mothballs triggers a nostalgic memory of exploring Mamma Barrett's trunk. There were buttons and marbles and tokens and bits of jewelry and handwork and legal-looking papers and pictures in there.
I also remember her fixing her chimney. I don't know what you call it, maybe chinking, but she would get some mud and use it like plaster each year to coat the outside of the fireplace. I think she then whitewashed it, but it was an annual occurance.
Mamma Barrett had feather beds and quilt boxes. You as well as I enjoyed jumping from the quilt box at the end of the feather bed onto the bed where you literally sank into a sea of soft down.
I remember persimmon trees. She loved to eat persimmons, but if you ate them before they were ripe they gave you the worst belly ache. I remember radishes. She had white radishes and red radishes in her garden. All I had to do was go out and pull some up; get the old hand-pump primed up so I could wash the radishes off and hunt the salt shaker. Fresh radishes sprinkled with salt were wonderful. The water had iron in it and stained everything it touched.
Mamma Barrett had the green thumb of all times. Anything she planted flourished. When she was 92, you, your dad, and I stopped by to see her. She was nowhere in sight. We finally heard a noise in the back yard. Your dad went around the house and there she was -- cutting down a tree with a one-man bow-saw. When your dad tried to help her she said that she needed the exercise. She mowed her own yard until about 92.
I remember all day singings. As soon as I could drive, every Sunday she had me chauffering her to Sacred Harp singings all over the near counties. They sang the notes, not the words, on some songs. I think that is an art that is coming back in the deep South.
She loved makeup--used too much of it- and jewelry. She had her ears pierced at about age 90.
Mamma Barrett cooked by the "pinch and dab" method. It all turned out okay, but to say the least she was not a gourmet cook.
She had a picture of her father, George Washington McNeil. He looked like an Indian to me--big feather in his hat and all. There was some story she told of an orphaned Choctaw boy taken in by a white family. I never knew if this were true or one of her great tales. Maybe it was her father; maybe her father's father; maybe all fantasy. It was not a time when it was politically correct to claim Indian ancestry so we were never sure.
What I remember most about Mamma Barrett is the great poise and strength she showed at the wake of her daughter, Vider Lee. She stood at the head of that casket and greeted the guests with the social graces of royalty and the fortitude and faith of Job.

Marriage Notes for CLEMENT BARRETT and SARAH WEATHERLY:
Libby, your grandmother met your grandfather when he was working road construction in Attala County. She had graduated from the 'W' and it was during the depression (1934). There were no jobs for teachers and she was working some type of clerical job in the Attala County Court house.
Your grandfather's father, Oscar Harrison Barrett was a member of the Board of Trustees of Zephyr Hill School in Neshoba County. That is how she got the job teaching there. She boarded with a family in that community.
Your grandparents married at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Union and kept their marriage secret until the end of that school term. At that time teachers would lose their jobs if they married. I believe that after their marriage became known they lived with your grandfather's parents for a short time then moved to a cabin on or near the Pearl River. They later bought a farm in the Coldwater community of Neshoba county and were living there when I was born in 1942

Notes for JO BIENVENU:
Sammy and his wife, Jo, were both deaf. Sammy was deaf from brain damage due to a forcep delivery at birth. There was no doubt as to the cause because the infant had external scarring in the scalp area over the temporal lobes from the forceps. Also, there had been no deafness in either side of his family. He attended the Mississippi School for the deaf in Jackson from age 3 until he graduated from high school. There he met Jo, a deaf girl from Baton Rouge, LA. Noone in her family for several generations could hear. I don't remember her last name, but I know that most members of her family were print setters or in the printing trade.
Sammy completed his education at Gallandet College in Washington, D.C. He then taught at Talladega School for the deaf and eventually returned to Jackson to become the football coach for the Mississipi School for the Deaf.
They had two children, Bonnie and Penny. Because the type deafness the Jo's family had is transmitted on a recessive gene and Sammy did not have the deaf gene, both daughters could hear. Sam and Jo tried to provide the stimulation that the girls needed to develop normally by hiring a hearing sitter while they worked. For a while they lived in Baton Rouge. Libby, your daddy and I visited them and were amazed at the gadgetry that was rigged so two deaf parents could be aware of an infant waking or crying at night.
They realized that their lives were too attached to the deaf culture and when each child got about age 3, they gave each child to Sam's sister, Merle to rear. Merle did an excellent job; I understand that the girls are lovely young career ladies who are devoted to their father. Sammy and Jo divorced before the girls were grown.
