To Governor J.S. Hogg

This is to certify, that convict No.5174 Steve Barrett who is now an inmate of the TEXAS STATE PENITENTIARY at Huntsville and who was heretofore by the District Court of Houston county, at the Spring Term therof, convicted of a felony in 2 cases. to wit: Horse Theft after a plea of not guilty and sentenced (afformed) on the 18 day of April A.D. 1888 to 5 & 10 cummalative years confinement in the penitentiary, was recieved here the 20 day of May A.D. 18 88, and has now served 4 years 3 months 21 days.

Conduct: Excellent- This man has a strong petition signed by a number of the best citizens in Madison county - Captian Swither knows most of them personally - I am of the opinion that at the experation of 5 years that the object of the law will have been accomplished, believing that he will make a good law abiding citizen, therefore I recommend that he be pardoned.
