Descendants of Miriam Hannah Barrett
Miriam Hannah Barrett, the daughter of David Barrett and Elizabeth Whitten, grand-daughter of Reuben Barrett and Hannah ? Doty, was born on April 25th 1821 in Greenville District South Carolina. Her father was embroiled in a court battle with his siblings over his fathers will. David and Elizabeth has taken in his two younger sisters for awhile after they were left parentless. The girls eventually moved on to an aunts home.In 1825 David and Betsey took their three children Albert aged 15, John 12, Polly 8 and Little Miriam Hannah, 4 years old from South Carolina to Fayette County, TN. They also took a faithful slave woman named Lucia who seemed to be more a member of the family, and their dog Taylor. They traveled by flat boat most of the way and walked the rest of the way. On March 6th 1826 her father wrote a letter to her grandfather back in S.C. and told of the trip. (You can read it on David Barrett’s webpage.) They lived in a 14 foot cabin with a dirt floor without a chimney and had to cook outside. Eventually her father took a school and was a school teacher for awhile so it would be safe to say that Miriam and her siblings were educated to some extent anyway.
Hannah married Hansel Coburn on July 18th 1839 in Fayette Co., TN. He was born in 1817 in Fayette Co., TN.
The couple migrated to Texas around 1847 as their first daughter Harriett was born there in that year. Living in Houston County and then moved to Madison County.
In Dr. Kittrell’s diary, published by his family I found an entry from December 1854 in Volume 1 Page 44:
Coburn Sometime during Christmas week I paid Hansel Coburn $100 for pork bought of him. A few days afterward, I paid John R. Parker, his brother in law and agent, $106.25, it being a balance due him for pork. A few days after Mr. Coburn brought over a small lot of hogs including two open sows, for which I paid him in cash $25. Among the hogs he brought were two small spotted male hogs, which he proffered to sell me for $3. I would not agree to give it, but he said that I would alter the hogs, and turn them out, and if they took up with my hogs and staid with me, I would pay him their worth.
Hansel Coburn served in the Civil War in the 11th Brigade, Houston County under Capt. Wortham. He was a member of Walker County, Tx Masonic Lodge of the Olive Branch as per Karen Hett in her article for the Houston County History Book.
Harriett O. Coburn born 1847 and died on Sept. 10, 1864 at 17 years of age. Her obit is on her webpage from the Madisonville paper.
Jane Coburn was born in 1850 in Texas
Margarret Coburn was born in 1857
Willie Coburn was born in 1860
There is an entry in William Robert Barrett’s family bible under births that reads “Mirian Hannah was born Apr 25, 1831 “Thare are three sons of the above that have lost thare mother and there father March 30, 1853.”. This bible is in the possession of Elwood Barrett of Madisonville. However this can not be a death date for Miriam and Hansel as they had two more children after this date.
