Barnwell, Fred (b. 6 APR 1864, d. 6 NOV 1905)Note: [CopyBarnwellLatest.FTW]
Fred who was born a Joiner's son at 16 Rose Street Birkenhead followed in his Father's footsteps until he moved to Salford where he met his wife to be Isabella.
Isabella who was a 19 year old House-Keeper was the daughter of Painter Thomas Tuer and his wife Thomina Chambers, unfortunately Isabella's Father died before she married Fred.
Their residence at the time of there marriage was 110 Biglands Street, Off Ordsal Lane Salford, Fred 21 years old, married Isabella in the presence of Harriet Berry and his younger brother Stephen at St Bartholomew Church Salford in the County of Lancaster.
Fred joined the Railways as a Stoker, their first child Stephen was born only 5 weeks after being married, you could say it was a 'shotgun wedding !!
Stephen was the first of five boys and four girls born between 1886 and 1899, one of the boy's Christopher, who was a sickly baby died when only one year of age. Two of the girls, Louie and Minnie went to live in Canada, little is known about them as it's possible they left England at an early age.
Fred and Isabella moved from the district of Salford to Chorlton, Manchester then onto Stockport (where four of the children were born). Fred was promoted to a Locomotive Engine driver before they returned to live in the Railway Industrial Dwellings on Oldfield Road Salford.
Fred who was a diabetic died at home in the arms of his loving wife Isabella after a long fight of ill health on the 6th November 1905, he was only 41years old and left his wife to bring up eight children aged between 6 and 19 years of age on her own which was very harsh in those days as no financial aid from the Government was available.
Isabella who never remarried somehow managed to get through those difficult times and went on to own her own 'Corner Shop' during the early 1930's at number 35 Windsor Street, Pendleton Salford, she started her business by baking and selling bread to friends and local people.
She then moved to number 44 Gt Cheetham Street Broughton, Salford during 1938, the year Britain declared war on Germany, one of Britain's allies, Poland was invaded by the German army.
During the war years (1939 - 1946) she had a house built at Parr Lane Unsworth, Bury, a couple of weeks after she moved home, the house in Gt Cheetham Street was damaged by a German night time bombing raid, one of only two houses damaged in the street !
The grand old lady certainly lived a long and eventful life, she celebrated her 90th birthday with her friends and many relatives at a 'big bash' during 1956, I was fortunate to be there with my parents and two older sister's as I was only five years old at the time.
Isabella died in her sleep at her home during the early months of 1958 at the age of 91 years.
