John Fulford Abt. 1779 - 1857 John appears in the 1851 census living in 'part of borough' in Downton, aged 72, still a labourer. With him is his wife Elizabeth, 69, and daughter Eliza, 45. Although Elizabeth and Eliza's ages are at odds with their dates of christening, this family is almost certainly the Fulfords in the family tree. Ages were not always precise in the 1851 census.
George Fulford George and his wife Mary Ann Musselwhite spent the first few years of their married life living in a row of cottages adjacent to Parsonage Farm, where George's elder brother John was a dairyman. George and Mary Ann were living at 87 Barford Lane in Downton, Wilts. in the 1851 census, he aged 30, with children Charles (8), Sarah (7), Henry (3), George (2) and John (7months). Later the couple moved to Hale Lane Downton. George and his brother John are mentioned in an entry in the Minute Books of the Alderbury Union: "13-12-1844 No further entries were made in the
Minute Books relating so either John Fulford senior found employment and
was no longer chargeable to the parish, or his sons complied and
provided him with support. (James Chalk, the Relieving Officer,
was the grandfather of Malvena Chalk, who married Henry Fulford,
George's second son.) Eliza
Fulford Eliza is living with her parents, John and Elizabeth Fulford, in Downton, Wilts in the 1851 census. She is described as a labourer. Her age of 45, however, doesn't agree with her date of christening but ages weren't always accurate. She appears not have married. Like her father, she had been receiving Parish Relief in 1844-45. She was buried in 1875, her body having been brought from the Workhouse in Salisbury. Mary
Fulford Mary, 37, is listed in the 1851 census with her husband, John Mitchell, 39, an agricultural labourer in Downton with two children George, 13 and James, 9. Since Mary and John were only married in 1846, it would seem likely that these children were in fact Mary's step-children. This is confirmed by the extract from the Minutes Book below. Mary died before the 1881 census, when John is listed as a widower living alone and still a farm labourer at the age of 70. The Minute Book of the Alderbury Union throws some light on the tragedy of John Mitchell's first marriage: "1-11-1844 Thanks to Barbara Brebner for this.
John
Fulford John is listed in the 1851 census at the Parsonage Dairy House, Downton with his wife, Harriett, 30 children George, 9, Charles, 5 , Arther (sic), 1 and Charlott, (sic) 7 months all born in Downton. John was a dairyman grazier and employed a 17 year old domestic servant. There is no mention of Sarah Ann who would have been 7 - see below. John and his family are also listed in the 1881 census, now living in Church Lane. By then 61, John was still a dairyman with wife Harriet, 60, and their three youngest children, all still living at home, Sarah, 28, dressmaker, Edward, 20, dairyman and John, 14, bakers apprentice. George
Fulford George is listed in the 1881 census aged 39 living in Load Hill, Downton with his wife Louisa, 39, and their children, Bessie, 13, Kate, 11, Annie, 10, George, 6 and Laura, 5. George was a harness maker. Sarah
Ann Fulford I think that Sarah Ann probably died before 1851 because she is not listed with the rest of her family in the census nor anywhere else in Wiltshire. Her parents also later had a daughter whom they named Sarah Harriet which would be unlikely had they had another daughter named Sarah still alive. Charles
Fulford
Charles married Julia Joice in 1863, but died eleven years later aged only 29. His widow is listed in the 1881 census living in Croucheston, Bishopstone, Wilts., aged 35 and supported by her children, George, 17, mason's labourer, James, 15, mason's labourer, and Alfred, 13, shepherd. Also living with them were her younger children, Charles,11 and Julia, 8, both scholars. Arthur
Fulford Arthur is listed in the 1881 census, aged 31, a dairyman, with his wife Louisa, 33, and their daughter Emma, 7. There are two marriages in the March quarter of 1872 listed in the Alderbury records both involving a Louisa, so without ordering a certificate, it is impossible to know whether George's wife was Louisa Gater or Louisa Lewis. Charles
Fulford Charles appears in the 1851 census as a scholar aged 8, living with his parents and
siblings in Barford Lane, Downton. Frances
Fulford
Frances is listed in the 1881 census aged 8, a scholar living at home with
her parents in Eltham, Kent. Sarah
Fulford Sarah is listed in the 1851 census aged 7, a scholar living with
her parents in Downton, Wilts.. George
Fulford George is listed in the 1851 census aged
2 living with his parents in Downton, Wilts. Henry
Fulford Henry is listed in the
1851 census, living with his parents in Downton, Wilts. aged 3. John
Fulford John, aged 31, was listed in the 1851 census living in the Parsonage Dairy House in Downton with his wife Harriet, 30, and children George, 9, Charles, 5, Emma, 3, Arther (sic), 1 and Charlotte 7 months all in Downton. John was a dairyman grazier and employed a 17 year old domestic servant. In the 1881 census, John and Harriet are living in Church Lane, Downton, aged 61 and 60. He is still a dairyman. Living with them were their three children born since the 1851 census, Sarah, 28, dressmaker, Edward, 20, dairyman and John, 14, a baker's apprentice. Robert
Fulford Robert is listed in the 1851 census aged 25, a labourer, living in Downton with his wife Sarah (25) and daughter Louisa (2). I could find no trace of any of them in the 1881 census. My mother always referred to her cousin as May. I don't believe that she ever married.
